@@EvWuzhere Idk dude I love Modest Mouse and have for years but Strangers to Ourselves was probably their only album I didn’t listen to back to back. It wasn’t bad but just too much of the same it got stale. This year they put out 2-3 songs and I’m already in love with them. Its refreshing to see a new approach while still maintaining the core sound. The thing that is really special is that they’ve been around as long as they have and are willing to experiment. I wish I had the vigor I did in my youth so you have to take that in consideration when saying they lack the emotional conviction because as you grow up your inspirations change so its cool to hear where they are coming from as individuals and artists at different stages in life.

Modest mouse to me has been more of an older brother or uncle that's always been there when I've needed someone to lean on. Just reading over the comments you can see how many people feel the same. One of the greatest moments of my life was seeing them live and the fans were amazing, it was family even though we were all strangers. I hope I get to experience a feeling of unity like that again. Nice! If you like their upbeat sounds you should really listen to “float on” “the ocean breathes salty” and “dashboard” these should give you a good sense of older MM as well. I think it’s always good to listen to the older music of a newly discovered band. If you like the songs I recommend you should check out some of their deeper cuts.

See I would be fine without the guitars if the lyric writing was strong but that just hasn't been there for me either. The "count backwards from zero, the winner wastes the time" line in this song is probably the only line that feels a bit like a Modest Mouse lyric to me out of the 3 songs so far. Because Isaac's voice is so distinct that the lyrics could hold the album by itself, but instead both the instrumental and the lyrics aren't there so it feels like nothing.

Yeah I admire the desire to make different styles of music however the bubbly pop version was not what I was hoping for. I guess that says more about me then the artists. I guess I like more distortion and weird tape effects as opposed to a polished premium production. I'm assuming the band feels differently because they don't want to make their old sound again. I'm just happy they're releasing new music. If it makes then more money(new fans) because it has a pop sensibility then that's great.

Heaven forbid people change and they creative outlook finds new inspiration. Look at any of the top musicians of our lifetime who have extensive catalogs. There is often periods of change and new sounds and style. It is pretty rare for a musician to last the test of time without changing at all. Unless your Red Hot Chili Peppers. Isaac has said one of his biggest influences is Bob Dylan who has a lot of variations to his albums over the years and has also been critized hard for changing his style. But look like 60+ years in the game 600+ songs catalogued and Bob is still considered one of the best of all time. I also believe Modest Mouse is one of the best of all time.

The music they made on hard drugs as teenagers will probably always be my favorite but I'm so grateful they still release new stuff that is crazy fun and more frequently now. It's a bummer that fans think a band is beholden to stay the same or change. I hope they attempt that album with OutKast again! This is my favorite track of the new stuff so far. What a long strange trip it's been since Sad Sappy Sucker. Every album unique and wonderful in it's own right. I remember Isaac saying he happily sold out but they've been some of the most honest eclectic group of albums I've ever seen and loved.

Haha oh yeah I agree. I think it was a pretty logical progression. I think they wanted to keep up with studio production abilities and eventually make a more electronic pop sound. I accept that decision despite preferring a more distorted gritty analog sound. (The fruit that ate itself)(This is a long drive...) (Interstate 8) I find enjoyable qualities with all of their music so for me that's a win.

@@SnackJar I feel you, but my perspective changed when I accepted that MM is different (literal lineup and just time), and that they aren’t actively trying to recapture the sound they had in the 90’s/early 2000’s. Something heavier and more guitar-driven would have been nice, but I really enjoyed this, too 🖤 Hope you can connect with something off the new album!
