I love the Chorus of this song, it sounds like the entire band is going one way, but then Issac's voice goes a completely different way, like it's pulling in the opposite direction. I don't know if it was intentional or not but it makes for a very exciting dynamic.

Yes, that's a great description. I'm not great at understanding lyrics, so I thought Isaac's lyrics had something to do with what the band was singing "We greased all the ropes/ Come bubbling outwards We'll throw you a line/And then "sit" back. Like they are speaking for Time and mocking how weak humans are compared to Time. That would have been a cool concept but the song is great as it is.

My Grandmother died the year this song came out, and I loved her dearly. She was a parent to me. One of our favorite things to do together was to rake up leaves together in her large yard come autumn. The line about the "trees turning colors now" always reminds me of those days in the fall where we worked together, gathering up leaves colored red and gold. I still miss those days, and this song if only for a few moments take me back in time to before she passed. This song is painful to listen to, but I love it all the same.

It's disheartening when people want the same album over and over again. "This doesn't sound like their third or fourth album and that's my favorite one" --stop you're doing it wrong. Each new album should be a step forward for the band, they worked hard and have completed something that IS Modest Mouse. If you don't like it, fine, but don't expect bands to put out the same shit year after year. Let bands create! Give it a chance - then give it a second chance!

The impression I get is that the songs on Strangers (including the ones that haven't been officially released but were played live before) kind of bridge the gap between Moon&Antarctica and Good News. There's an obvious pop sensibility to everything, but the variety is much larger and more impressive, and certainly more daring, than what was on the last two albums. There's also an overarching melancholy to all the tracks- not uncommon from MM, but it's hard to say Good News wasn't their "happiest" album, and this feels like a much more angry, bitter Good News. I'm not knocking that. I want that.

StyxTBuferd I would say the "poppiest" album was Good News, but We Were Dead was pretty daring also I feel like. In fact, I think every Modest Mouse album is Daring in it's own way, but I do see what you are saying as far as it's more along the lines of some of their older stuff. As far as it just being angrier, I wouldn't say that. I usually just tell people that music by Modest Mouse is emotional in general. Another thing I always tell people when telling them about Modest Mouse is that Modest Mouse has a song for any kind of emotion, and everywhere in between. That's the greatest thing about them. Same with their albums and how they all have very distinctive feels. The idea I got from this album is futility of peoples lives, pertaining mostly to suburbia, which is alluded by the cover of the overly structured neighborhood. I wouldn't call this "bitter Good News", but hey, I can see how you got that impression.

for some reason I was really upset when I first heard this album, I just expected something more. But modest mouse is modest mouse, I started listening to them when I was 13 and now I'm 21. This is the first album that has come out since I was a kid, and I guess I expected an evolution of the band or something, but I've listened to the same albums over and over again through my formative years and I realize that the albums weren't all that different-I love some songs, I go back and find new songs I hated before, the songs I liked before I don't like as much now, but it's still all modest mouse, and modest mouse is an entity that exists in itself, and this album is another great addition to their collective work. now kids in 2015 learning to love this band have six instead of five albums to listen to over and over again, and I'm still happy I had five

"Our predecessor left this box, and something's clawing around. I think it really wants out." This is such a deeply human line. He has put the house up for sale but would routinely leave his front door open. People would wander in an just say hello or strike up a conversation with him. A reporter realized this when she went to interview him. She said he barely looked up from whatever he was reading and after a few minutes exclaimed "oh, I have an interview today".. he did say he's chased 3 people out with an axe and did become tired of the neighborhood. Anyone else getting a "Dukes Up" vibe from this? Very similar melody lines. Good to see Isaac's music hasn't changed as much as some like to think.

This is great. I have really liked each of the releases so far. I'd say for all the people complaining about this being far off from the classic MM we still have to hear the album from start to finish before you can write any of these tracks off. In context with the entire album I'm sure each track will feel completely different.

Also 4:20 of this track is about as heavy as anything off Moon and Antartica.

This album is great just like all the others are. I think it stays with the original sound of mm and explores all the human emotions equally well as do all their previous albums. Mm is great and props on their original sound

This is probably my favorite out of the tracks they've released from the new album so far. One thing that is getting to me though ... does anyone else think the mix sounds too "centered"? Maybe I'm just tired, or maybe I've been listening to too much electronic music lately, but it just seems kind of flat listening in headphones. I mean, even "Dashboard" to me sounds a lot brighter and more lively. Oh well, still love it. I just wish there were more movement and spread in the sounds.

I think the same as you. I listened with headphones too and it does feel a little bit flat, like lacking some kind of "punch" to it, maybe? Still, an incredible song!
@DDball10 жыл бұрын
darkoriano Yeah, not sure if it's the upload quality or what. But yeah, lacks a bit of the punch as you say.

I'm sure it will sound clear as day once the album drops! (fingers crossed)

DDball welcome to the ugliness of listening to compressed youtube uploads. just wait for the actual CD and then listen. otherwise we just have to cope. worth it for 8 years new MM

Sorta feels real compressed. Like there's not a lot of room to breath. Wish the guitars screamed a bit more like in the Moon and Antarctica.

I think this one and The Best Room will be great in concert because they'll jam out the last 4 minutes or so of the song. They can pretty much do this with most of their stuff--the best example "The World at Large."

I can't get enough of this song. So damn catchy. I feel like this song is about evolution and I love how it's portrayed as this sort of sloppy creator with his 'shirttails wrinkled, hanging out'. "The world's an inventor with its work Crawling, running, squirming 'round Trees drop colorful fruits Directly into our mouths The world's an inventor We're the dirtiest thing it's thought about And we really don't mind" "The world composes With his shirttails wrinkled, hanging out Bang us together See what sort of sounds we make right now The world plays music Playing skin on teeth inside of the mouth What sort of sounds What lovely sounds come about"

Oh i d say. I knew who the band was , and had heard float on a bunch of time. But i heard this song one day out in the tractor in the hay field cut n hay. With the head phones on and had to stop and try to KZbin it which didn't work worth a crap. Cell phone service in Northwestern Wisconsin Sucks. Lol. Love. Lampshades on fire too. Would love to see them live. But being a Dirt farmer. It ain't going to happen. Lol. Rock. ON DUDE.
