If you had purchased the deluxe version with the included leather case it has velcro strips which allows the dead cat to sit without any movement.

Aha! didn't know of that - could have saved me some time. Thanks!

U were ahead or ur time. Rycote eventually did just this very setup for their current shockmount line.

Hi. Can You explain me more precisly this trick with shorting plug for unused XLR inputs? Is inside specjal connection or just empty plug? I did try with many settings and noise is the same always. :) And what are your settings in input type? Separate?

Hi Krzystof, It's a long time since I did this video, so I had to get the R-26 out and look at the settings... In this configuration, the setup is as on the video: Rec Mode = 4-channel, Rec Source = Internal+Analog, Analog In Input Type = Separate, Input 1 Phantom = On, Input 2 Phantom = Off, Sensitivity Analog = -56dBu. Note that this is quite a high gain (sensitivity) setting, as might be used to capture very quiet sounds. When recording louder sounds with lower gain, noise on the unused channel is not really noticeable anyway. The mic preamp is designed to have a comparatively low-impedance source connected to its input, say 200 Ohm, which is the case with most pro mics, but leaving the inputs open represents a very high impedance (>1M Ohm). The higher the source impedance, the greater the thermal noise at the input to the preamp - that's just a fact of physics, unfortunately. That noise is amplified by the mic preamp. By shorting XLR pins 2 and 3 ('hot' and 'cold' signal inputs) together, the preamp is seeing a near-zero-Ohm impedance, with corresponding very low thermal noise. Even if phantom power to this input is switched on, it is not an issue, as the voltage is common to both input pins, so there is no net current flow between them. Pin 1 of the XLR is ground, and connecting that to the XLR body helps to shield the inputs from ambient electrical interference. It is important not to connect either of the input pins (2 or 3) to ground pin (1), as that will short out any phantom power and may cause additional interference. Hope that helps!

Yes it would be, but we have been overtaken by events: Rode have released an updated pistol grip, the PG2-R which uses the Rycote Lyre suspension, and is more adjustable than my modified PG2!
