nice!! i drive and absolutely love an 88 base model.. (1.0 - 3cyl - carbureted - 5spd - 12" tires - stock except new HU/speakers). by far the most reliable and simple car ive owned. i can lift out the block, trans and all the other front end innards by hand with no lift or chains or roommate to help, replace every gasket, filter, plug fluid and hose, rebuild the carb and reassemble it, and have it tuned up / running in one saturday using not much more than a +/- screwdriver, plug wrench, vice-grips & old Haynes Manual! i keep it maintained and drive it nice and regularly get 54 to 58+mpg in 5th going 65 on the highway and a solid 42 to 48+mpg stop/go around town.... not bad for an $800 craigslist car... like what, $30,000? cheaper than a Prius.. and better mpg / less douchey too!

120 HP is about all they'll do..they made 70 HP. 10 grand in mods for 50 HP gain is silly. Honda owners will just laugh at you
@JamalSpelling
@JamalSpelling 7 жыл бұрын
Joke's on you. Mods for HP gain were less than 3 grand, and the impressive part is that it was all done on the stock electronics, keeping it simple and reliable. It's pushing 140 HP now with some tweaks, and curb weight is only 1400 lbs, and I fill up my gas tank for about $25.

Wow! That has to be one of the most modified turbo Sprints I have ever seen. Did not even know some of those products were available. I have owned my red one since 1992. I might be selling it. Done a lot to it, lots of new parts, but no mods. Love your car.

I have an 87 Turbo and was wondering about the following: 1) How do you "hack" the VAF (air box) to handle more flow? 2) Did you ever look into a substitute for the Ignition/Knock Module?
@JamalSpelling
@JamalSpelling 3 жыл бұрын
Remove the black plastic cover and increase the spring tension incrementally to suit your needs. It can create additional complications, if the spring is to tight you need to pop out the factory seal on the bypass airflow screw and adjust as needed for idle. There are also other VAF's that you can swap. There is no substitution for the ignitor other than a complete aftermarket engine management system, like Megasquirt.

Hey! I have the same engine where the hell did you get parts for the damn thing lol I was trying to find a replacement air-filter no one had any so I decided to go the route of a cold air intake instead but ran into the issue with the MAF being on the air filter box.

i found an air filter a one of the chain auto-stores.. had to go to about 6 tho, and the one i found.. the guy said it had been setting there for almost 15 years, he even gave me a discount bc the box was dirty and old.. wasnt even in there inventory (prob pocketed the $15, but whatever)! this car/engine was actually designed and built in japan by Suzuki (badge engineered as a chevy in the u.s) in the rest of the world its a suzuki sa310, swift, cultus, forsa, khybar, holden borina, firefly... and i believe the early Subaru justys where the same car. and eventually became the geo metro (a suzuki)... so, in many cases the parts from those cars will fit if the model year is close. especially engine parts (suzuki g10) i currently have a carb i found online in japan from an sa310, air intake tubes from a cultus, a turbo steering wheel and hubcaps (on my base model non turbo 1.0 3cyl 5spd car :) - from a cultus, door handles from a khybar, headlight assemblies from a swift and rear speaker brackets and seats from a metro!

I have probably the shittiest one of these in existence. It was running stock on 5psi but the head gasket finally blew and now I'm taking it all apart. Time for upgrades!?!? I really appreciate all of the work you have done to yours after messing with mine for a bit now. Do you have much turbo lag with your setup? I think my stock turbo has some life left in it but when the head gasket blew, it blew externally and hot coolant was spraying down the exhaust manifold long enough for it to rust a hole through it. I think I can patch her up but I need to get some headers lined up soon. Did you weld on your own turbo flange or did you find some already made up? Are you running stock injectors or what size are you running? I didn't catch that part... Crx and golf owners already hate it. In fact EVERYBODY hates it. I get the DIRTIEST looks driving it around town. Maybe its partly due to the skull my friend painted on the hood or the snowmobile flag so I dont get run over and my straight piped exhaust.
@JamalSpelling
@JamalSpelling 6 жыл бұрын
Lots of lag, lost all my low end, but it's an afterburner when it kicks in. There are things I've done to reduce the lag, but yes there is a trade off. Header was professionally made. Ditch the straight pipe, it's annoying. This build runs on 320cc injectors, stock is 210cc. Trial and error using independent on board A/F gauge to find best size injector for mods and target boost goal.
@misterbulger
@misterbulger 6 жыл бұрын
I agree about the straight pipe but thats how I acquired it... was thinking about trying to put a motorcycle muffler on it. Is it all stock cam and pistons?

I have an 87 chevy sprint turbo. Is it possible to install a BoV on the car at all?
@JamalSpelling
@JamalSpelling Жыл бұрын
Why? There is already a factory (POV) valve on the intercooler. You can hear it pop around 10-11 psi, that is if your engine is healthy and well maintained. Factory boost is around 5-6 psi, so you might hear it on a cold morning with dense air if you really wind it up. If you turn up the boost with a boost controller, you might hear it at the end of 1st and 2nd gear.., but your car's gotta be pretty tight under the hood, no air leaks in intake or vacuum. You don't really need it otherwise. This one needed it with 15psi boost, and I ditched the factory intercooler for the front mount one. You can see the cheap Ebay BOV @ 2:24, it was functional but failed quickly, and replaced with much better quality BOV. But for whatever reason you want to put an aftermarket BOV on a stock Turbo Sprint you are wasting your time.

Tweeters are for function, not for looks. If you saw the OG seats, you'd agree these are 100% better condition. Steering wheel is bad ass, The OG steering wheel is waaay too large, again the wheel is for functionalilty and I think it looks cool and that's what counts. Any other Turbo Sprint owner would agree as well. What counts is what's under the hood, a 45% percent increase in HP over stock. Boooyahh!

niiiice so you get 33 mpg, and 140 hp in a pice of shit car that weighs like 600kgs. That's a decent power to weight ratio, but it's still totally *insane*. You could pick any one of dozens of other cars and get similar mpg with better top speed, acceleration and total hp. It doesn't matter though, this is how to hot rod.
