Modified Honda Civic Type R EP3 V FK2 Comparisons!! 4K

The question is: Do you buy an EP3 Type R and modify it or do you put that money towards a standard FK2 Type R instead?

Olly and Tom are back to discuss whether a modified Civic Type R EP3 is better than a standard FK2 Civic Type R. In the case that we have here, the EP3 Type R is running 254bhp and 222nm from the naturally aspirated K20a2 engine a the FK2 Type R is running the standard power of 306bhp and 400nm from its turbo charged K20C1 engine. Both cars have a Limited Slip Differential and both have good quality tires. For around £6000 less, you can buy a standard EP3 and modify it to make it the same as Olly’s car. Although it is still down on power compared to the FK2, the modifying process is lost when jumping straight in with the FK2. Is modifying a car a crucial part of ownership or would you rather just leave the car standard and have it the way it was intended? Either way, which route are you taking?

It’s quite funny to me that you’ve just done this video. I’m just about to buy a Championship White FK2 after having my Cosmic Grey EP3 for 10 years! The FK2 for me right now is the better car, but I’ll certainly miss my EP3.

I have had an ep3 twice, because I kept missing it. Then I went with an fn2 because I wanted something more modern practical as a family car but keep the high revving k20. Then I came across an fk2 where I could trade in my fn2 so went with that. Its an amazing fast car and so super practical as a daily family car. But somehow I also kept missing the high revving nature pure fun wize. So now I have an fk2 daily and an s2k as sunny fun car. 😂 Not the cheapest combo but this is perfect 😂😂😂 Good video! *edit* I was just asking myself, would I want to trade in my fk2 for an ep3. And my answer would be no. 😊

@OllyRoss I really think it is. As it's a good investment and it gives the added benefit of a convertible for the sunny days. I often chose the s2k over the fk2 depending on the weather and how many people are coming along. 😃

I just bought an fk2 owned it a few weeks and love it. Owned a ek4 vti in early 2000's and wanted something fun ever since. I been looking at both for years thing that sold fk2 is they just ain't changed in value in this time. I belive the fk2 is going to increase in value over next 10 years not decrease like fk8. Finding a good ep3 was something I could justify the 12 plus grand u need now. Then u got old shockers springs ect so I went for a late fk2

If you haven't already done so, it's worth doing the fk8 bypass valve upgrade. Shouldn't cost more than a 20 and it makes a noticeable difference on throttle response when in "comfort" mode.

Another great vid Olly. I'm team EP3 and I think the answer is simple. If you love the mod journey and like having "a project" go with EP3. If you just like to drive and want a great handling, powerful hot hatch out of the box then go for the FK2. Would also like to see a few drags with both.

Thanks man. Yeah, I think that is it really. Although you can do the mods with the FK2, it’s all much bigger money. The FK2 really is great out of the box though! I would love to get them together to see what the result will be. I just don’t know how to organise it whilst filming it too

I have the fk2, I do miss the vtec noise but honestly the performance is miles apart. A simple map will get you 370bhp and 500nm and I have the eventuri, it’s good for holding power, which is hilarious. I agree with some of the comments though, I find myself still wanting a more raw project car like a caterham or similar for a weekender, So the ep3 might be good for that too.

I've gone from a EP3 to a FK2 and wouldn't wanna go back as a daily. Hunting redline in the EP3 is just a league on it's own which i miss enorm.

Try a Remus Responder for the FK2. It gives you the throttle response of the +R mode, without the bone-shaking suspension. Also, an Injen induction kit ( less than half the cost of Eventuri) & a Forge BOV.

I love my jdm k20a ep3 and the "modifying journey" its taking me on, and one day I would love to see it with some sort of positive pressure intake on it (turbo or supercharger). Altho I would like a later turbo k20c powered type r, the ep3 just has something "nice" about how it sounds and delivers power. I do love turbo torque and I miss the old jdm turbo cars I've had, but theres a point where more power is not fun on a public road with a tonne of traffic.... Its always "more fun to drive a 'slow' car fast than a 'fast' car slow" :)

Get yourself a Remus responder, will make the throttle pedal response much better. 360bhp from a map, intake exhaust and intercooler stock cat isn’t restrictive that will give you 400bhp. For all out power you would go for the fk2, the front suspension setup has come along way since the ep3. Depends if you like the na feel of the ep3 or the turbo feel of the fk2. Fk2 can do the daily duties as well.

If you have to daily your car, then FK2 is more practical for me. For a weekend toy/project car EP3 👍So in an ideal world I'd buy both to have in my collection 🤣

Good point lads. Good fun with less money. I own fn2 2007 with quaife lsd installed by me. One uk owner. It cost me around 7-8 grand with vrt to register in Ireland. Rere example with low mileage. So happy about my car. I always look at fk2 but it would be another plus 17 grand. Will it make me more happy???

Yeah I got 1 fitted on mine and it didn't need a remap, it's one of the best sounding air intakes for the fk2 😊

I do love the fk's but you can't beat that sound of the A2 over the fk. One Day I will buy a fk8.. but next one on the list is a dc5 first. Then fk8 then have best of 3 cars to drive 😂😂

FK2 in champ white all the way....oh wait i own one also :D the resale values of the Fk2s are silly right now, its worth approx 5k more than i paid for it 2 yr ago, and its my daily driver, i aint selling it! :) drive the fk2 like aunt daisy and 42mpg + how do you do it Honda! To use R mode on normal roads, cant recc Michelin sports for the FK2 enough, best thing i swapped from conti 6s. you cant beat the FK2 on B roads that are good condition, it corners like on rails. I got 4 michelin ps4 pros for £460 fitted @Costco £100 off for buying 4 about 4 weeks ago.

@@VtecLad lazy in is a bad word in my opinion. I went from have 2 ep3s after eachother to an fk8 and it's a whole other level and the driving experience is better aswell but it's not stock either. both extremely fun no question about it but different pricerange and performance overall

FK2 or FK8 absolutely no point looking at EP3 or FN2 if you can afford one of the turbocharged type r. The old ones were good for their time but sadly it’s passed.

Good for their time? Still good now mate, I could buy an fk2 I wouldn’t have one over my jdm, I’d pick the jdm over my supercharger fn2. Nothing compares to the ep3 if you want to drive a car
