Speed 6 is a good sleeper alternative to an sti, evo, its more refined and less flashy.
@colin_rose9 жыл бұрын
BCJDM That's because it's based on a midsize rather than a compact. It's more equivalent to a Legacy GT turbo, or a JDM Galant VR4. Mazda's competitor to the WRX/EVO would be the Mazdaspeed3.
@NoBrakes239 жыл бұрын
BCJDM Too bad it's so damn heavy.
@TonyToretto259 жыл бұрын
NoBrakes23 Makes no difference. The double wishbone suspension handles the weight well. Its funny how many people complain about it, but have never taken the car to the limit. Your the problem, not the car.
@NoBrakes239 жыл бұрын
TonyToretto No matter how good your suspension is or how much horsepower you have, in a downhill turn, weight is a liability. I owned a 2003 6s, it was heavy, (though it would be considered light by current standards.) Yes, the suspension did an admirable job of carrying the weight, (It was really fun to drive once I learned how to use LTO to combat the FWD's natural push.) But my solid axle, leaf sprung XJ Cherokee was easier to put through a corner when going downhill. No sane person would argue that the Jeep is a better handling vehicle, but mass counts, and the extra 400 lbs that the Mazda carried made a difference. I'm sure the MS6 is a fun car to drive, but AWD with the same or more power can be had without so much girth.

Matt, the car weighs 3580 lbs from the factory so you were spot on. Also I am in the northeast and I have had my MS6 for the last 4 years and it can drive on any surface. first two years were with summer tires and the last two were with winter tires. The winter tires made an even bigger difference. Never got stuck once in 8+ inches of snow. I also have the NT05's and they are a blast. Good review. Glad to see a MS6 finally on here.

Cyclist and car guy checking in. There are some a-hole cyclists but more than a few a-hole motorists as well. I just try to ride as safely and predictably as possible. And for me that means controlling the lane by default and helping to facilitate passing when safe to do so, but I do ask motorists to change lanes to pass and not split lanes.

Yes. All good points above. For every a-hole cyclist, there is an a-hole motorist. A lot of new cyclists don't know how to ride on roadways. If they want to ride on streets, then they need to know the rules of the road. I ride on the road as if I were a car. I agree with Patrick94GSR on controlling the lane and facilitating passing. Matt guessed correctly, the common curb weight number seems to be 3579lbs. The speed6 is an amazing platform to have fun with, upgrade and modify. The issues with the car are common mazda problems. The paint is frail and they rust very quickly in the northeast. I have had 2 of them over the past 5 years and I fall in love with it over and over again. It looks like a stylish family sedan and when done right, is as fast if not faster than the evo and subaru sti it is commonly compared to. The better comparison is to the Legacy GT and the speed6 blows it away. The interior is good quality for its time and is as good as its competitors. I wish I lived closer to where the one takes are because I built mine to be a reliable daily driver and a track day star. Rare, pretty and a quality sleeper.

Up here in Canada we get some harsh winters (cold and snowy). The mazdaspeed 6, with a nice set of winter tires, is an absolute beast when the snow starts falling. They launch, turn into and exit corners with zero issue and stop on the spot. With dsc turned off they are nicely balanced and more than happy to dance around in the snow when the gas is used correctly. It was such a great car to have during the winters months.

I own a speed 6 and live in the northeast. Not only does it get around well in the snow, it absolutely loves it. Being a haldex setup, most people correlate that with sub par power transfer for loose surfaces. Well that is not the case with this car at all. It does a fantastic job at getting traction. Loved the video and glad you liked the car Matt!
@titaniummazdaspeed69 жыл бұрын
Also, the brake feel that you were talking about was most likely the pad/rotor setup. I have the exact same combo and it changed the pedal feel drastically. Stock pads were very touchy, but the hawks require some deep pedal travel to really get them to dig in. The hawks definitely work a lot better against fade, as they work much better with heat in them.

This car in the snow is incredible. I live in the NW and came across a few instances on my 245 summer tires and was shitting my pants a bit, but by the end of it could't have had more confidence. Because this thing is a boat (not quite 3900, but still pretty hefty) it stays pretty planted, but once you get her sideways she maintains a slide really well. I actually picked up my first set of blizzaks for this winter, and am kind of dissappointed, as you literally cannot get this thing out of grip. But overall the AWD system is quite impressive and very responsive. Very happy with my car, and happy someone else appreciates it too!

I own a 06 Mazdaspeed 6 GT like this one here. I absolutely love it. Granted there are quarks like with any car. The engine mounts and rear diff mounts are absolute garbage. Same for the fuel pump (mine gives me hell right now but I have plans to fix that) I live in the north east and it drives fantastic in the snow with just all weather radials however, rust can be an issue. The car is silent, I don't really mind that. Its a great cruiser. Once you get stiffer springs to combat squat and dive, its suggested to install a camber bolt and add a little to the front to increase handling and reduce under steer which it absolutely will do with crappy tires or in any sort of moisture especially when the front is loaded under breaking. The car is quite heavy mostly due to chassis bracing behind the rear seats and other spots to support AWD. In fact, if you look at the CX-7's drivetrain, its almost identical to the point where people who broke their xfer cases would just use a infinitely cheaper but just as strong CX-7 case till Mazda changed the input shaft size or flange (I forget), but there are ways around that. In any case, its an awesome car and so is his. I'm just not a fan of the "murdered" look, especially when blacking out the rear tail lights. Saw a fugly Optima the other day with tails so dark I wasn't able to tell he was braking if he didn't have the cyclops light untinted in the rear window.

@chrishuyler35808 жыл бұрын
I daily'ed one in the Northeast for 7 years with no upgrades except springs. The stock shocks were just fine with a 1" drop. With snow tires on, it would cruise at 80 mph in a snow storm. Turn off the traction control and then you could really have some fun. If you're in the market, there are a few things to watch out for. Rattle on cold start (sounds like swirling BBs in a tin can) means the VVT is going and timing belt needs to be replaced. Transfer case tends to leak and there isn't much you can do to fix it. Rust forms under the front lip of the hood on any car driven in winter so look for a southern car or plan to replace the hood. The GT with leather, moonroof, heated seats, and keyless entry is a well equipped car even by today's standards. I'd buy it again in a heartbeat. Only traded it in when rust started to appear, should have kept it.

Great car in the winter. Even on really bad all season tires, the handling characteristics in the snow are communicative and when it breaks loose it is a gradual process and not scary. That makes it great to hoon around and daily drive in all winter conditions. The awd goes directly to a 50/50 split when the front wheels spin and the car is very tossable.

+Chris Mazzei Hi, Chris, does the speed 6 burn through tires quickly as some say? I heard as fast as 8000 miles! I know it depends on how you drive. I plan to drive modestly 80% of the time... Thanks.

+classicjukebox, You need to get an alignment when you buy the car as they have a habit of being severely out of alignment. I got 30k and sold the old car with plenty of tread left. Just get alignments with new tires and inspect ball joints and bushings.

I live in Alaska, and while my first winter driving my 07 wasn't particularly snowy or icey, I got to drive it quite a bit. Unfortunately I couldn't afford to replace the G-Force Comp 2 tires, and they were godawful in those conditions. I took it up the hillside in Anchorage and it was able to climb up some decently steep slopes, but I had to turn around when I got to Toilsome Hill Dr. (the road up to Flat Top) the drive back DOWN the hillside was more like a series of controlled slides. However, even with those crap tires, I absolutely could NOT get that thing sideways with the ESP on. Even on sheer ice with a light dusting of dry snow (probably the slipperiest conditions I can think of) and throwing the e-brake, nothin. So it's a safe car, especially for people not used to driving in those conditions. As well, it accelerated quicker than a FWD with studded snow tires. I will have a better set of studded snow tires this winter, and hope to really test it out further. I will be going up north to Sutton to try out some muddin soon, too. I have a set of sumitomo all seasons I'm testing out on as many surfaces as I can.

had a Speed6 for a few years and I drove the living SHIT out of it! Total sleeper, cops don't even look in your direction. The problem is you NEED to get a lot of the little bits in order for the car to be reliable (rear diff brace, rear motor mount, etc). The Cobb Tunes wake the car up like you wouldn't imagine + add Launch control and Flat Foot Shifting!

I own a MS6 and live up in Sacramento. I take it out in the snow up in Tahoe (at least when it finally freaking snows up here) and it handles like all the subarus i've ever owned. Super easy to drive in hazardous conditions. You can be safe with not much loss of traction, but turn off the stability control and let the back end wag :) I love my MS6. I'll start with my mods when i finally finish those loan payments!

Thanks for no longer using that camera angle... Vertigo inducing, thought I was falling off the road

Matt be careful man driving on those roads, even though you're a skilled driver. I would stain my undies driving that fast

I'm from newburgh ny I own a mazdaspeed6 its awesome in the snow and the round bumper breaks right threw the deep stuff .ms6 is one of the most easy cars to over steer and so easy to control sideways also the sleeper style of the car excites everyone instantly falling in love once informed of its credentials lastly sport package is much lighter than the grand touring

+Nate Sass good to know they're good in the snow. I actually live not to far from Newburgh and am in the market for an awd sport sedan and these didn't even cross my mind.

Live in the northeast, northern VT, it’s does pretty good in the snow, wouldn’t say it’s as good as my daily, a Lancer SE AWC with the ability to lock the difs or the Imprezas I owned a few years back. I haven’t driven mine in the winter for the last 3 years so I can prevent the salt from getting all up into everything. My wife’s Tiguan is also better in the snow. Low speed 1st gear in the snow the rear end gets a little squirrelly even when you are driving it easy. That being said it’s super easy to control in a slide, the rear dif is a limited slip which is nice. I’ve never gotten it stuck though either, but then again I only drove it for 2 winters in the 6 years I’ve owned it, I drove it through a pretty nasty nor’easter that dumped 39” of snow onto the roads and it did just fine, was running Michelin Ice X tires on it at that point.

I have an 06' MS6 as well and have a ton of fun drifting in the snow in Michigan and have never been stuck(most recorded snowfall in 2015) I also agree with owners weight(3600 lbs sans driver, google is your friend).

I drive my MS6 all year around in NH and have never had an issue in the snow. Running all-seasons and turning the DSC off is all you need.

That exhaust would drive me nuts. I had a Ford Probe GT with aftermarket Borla exhaust. The day I put the OG exhaust back on, I was much happier on everyday driving.
@charcharm26818 жыл бұрын
what is your comparison? I don't get it
@TomZ238 жыл бұрын
charchar m Driving a quieter car was much preferred over the loud exhaust. That's what I'm getting at.
@charcharm26818 жыл бұрын
yea I gotcha, plus your probe was prolly old as heck right? I drive a '98 Subaru with 163,0000 mile and it is pretty modded
@TomZ238 жыл бұрын
charchar m It was a '93 V6 and I finally traded it in 2009 with 256,000 miles. Engine ran great, but the car was showing age. I wanted a new car with all the stability stuff, etc. I ended up putting the original exhaust back on in 2007. So the last two years were nice an quiet compared to the Borla I had on for 10 years.
@charcharm26818 жыл бұрын
put more money into the engine than the car is worth and what I bought it for. I hve done nothing to the body and/paint. Got major paint flaking going on but engine is prime haha! rebuilt the engine at 143000 mile, done everthing but exterior is complete shit... I like it that way lol sleeper as fuck

Mazda speed 6 is a nice car for an "only car that does it all" type deal. It really slips under the radar in the tuner world too, not a car you see or hear a lot about.
