Shhhh, don't tell people how these cars are actually good despite IMS issues. Keep them cheap please, I want to pick one up eventually. :P Yeah driving a rear engine car is different than driving a front engine car. The car wants to naturally wash out and your thought is, okay, I'll add throttle and it'll rotate. Nope, it just squats and sits down and rotates even less and almost 'crabs' outwards. Almost like driving a front engine front wheel drive car you want to wait for the lift off rotation too come in mid corner, feel the pendulum effect, have the car lined up on the exit, and THEN roll on the throttle and power out. Just requires a different driving style. More rewarding when you nail it, but can bite you in the ass because not forgiving.

The turbo greatly diminishes the sound of the flat 6. C&D mag called the turbo an "appliance for speed" (not a compliment). The problem with the turbo is that the launch in to hyperspace overshadows its other strengths and its tempting to drive it like a muscle car. I'm not a fan of the 911 turbo 996, turbo 997 or the turbo 991. Reviewer is correct about IMS, just replace it already!

Might be reviving an old thread here, but just wanted to address corner entry/under steer mentioned here vs S2000. Any 911 aside from 991+ (former 991.1 gt3 owner speaking), will under steer if going too hot into a corner. The 911 is very much a slow in fast out platform and takes a different driving style. Trail brake in, set the car, get on throttle early throttle steering through the apex and flat out just before the wheel straightens out. In my opinion the most rewarding platform on track. Takes a good driver with solid fundamentals to drive fast, and will make you a better driver at the limit. If you're pushing it even 7/10ths on the track with systems off... you better know what you're doing. I see new P-car guys spin out in the corners just about every track day. lol
@cabbys3 жыл бұрын
Excellent comment, but in my opinion, even on the 991.1 the slow in, power out applies, it’s just not as noticeable as on a 996.2. They’re different from each other but both are great.

Good video! Love the sound of the M96!I have a 2 996's. The IMS bearing issue isn't the only issue with these cars. There are over 10 MOFs (methods of failure) for the M96 engine. The IMS bearing is the one that is most known. Timing/cam chains breaking, cylinder walls wearing out, cylinder walls "D-Chunking" are other common catastrophic engine issues.Great cars when they are running well though! I'm hoping to get one of my spare M96 engines rebuilt to take care of all of the common issues so I can just enjoy the car.

You can’t drive a 911 the same way as an s2000. They have different balance naturally. A 911 has to be setup properly and you need lots of seat time to learn the characteristics of the car. Once you do that, you will realize the car is perfectly balanced for what it is designed to do.

No, you do not need to trail brake a 996 into a turn. That's a good way to end up in the bushes, unless you are extremely skilled. No - the best way to tip a stock 996 into a corner is to turn in as you come off the brakes. This keeps all the weight on the front, and forces the front end into your corner, whether or not the back wants to follow along nicely! This is why the secret to fast progress in a 996 is to enter a corner slowly, and get on the gas as soon as the front has turned in. The earlier the better. Shifting weight to the back, and leveraging the 996's amazing traction to rocket out of the turn. And woe betide the inexperienced 996 driver who enters a turn too quickly: They are leaving the road going backwards to the scene of the crash. The IMS bearing is a NON-ISSUE. Simply never allow the engine to operate at low revs while climbing a hill. That's it. IMS will never fail! :)

The handling of the Boxster is stunning. Drive a 911 right after and you notice the instant you hit your first turn. Alas, even the Boxster S failed to have enough torque to match the thrill of a base 911 until 2009 when the new motors came out (no IMS and the auto became the remarkable PDK).

You always have to worry about the IMS unless you replace with an upgraded part from LN Engineering. And it has to be done when nothing is wrong in that regard. People with fully dealer serviced 911s have left the dealer after a major service interval and kaboom the damn thing goes without warning. First thing I did to my 911 after its perfect PPI at dealer was to replace it. No $ for mods after maintenance but you don't really need mods. Get a manual !!!

Strunz0 Cars no question the GT4 is a great car. I've driven an S, but not in anger, and loved it too. Very balanced chassis that loses the tail heavy feel of the 911. But for many reasons I love the 911 more, not least of which is that I have aspired to one since a teenager in the '60s. Outright speed and track times matter nothing to me. I race a different marque. What I wanted was a great road performance sports car. The Cayman would be a close second. While I don't track my 911, it would be a brilliant track car. Your comment sort of implied it wasn't, though I acknowledge you didn't mean it that way. Enjoy driving. Anywhere. Just enjoy it!

Go and do a track day experience for a few hundred dollars and get a feel for them. I have a 996 GT3 and will never part with it. Once you get a feeling for the 911's they become addictive. Just to make a side note there are different types of 911's in that they have different character. A 993 for example is an older model but it has an air cooled engine which means it is louder as it needs to have higher revs but it feels lighter meaning the handling will feel more controlled. S2000's are cool but they are just a level below 911's. You may try out 911's and decide to stick with your s2000.
