996's were rejected by the yuppy crowd due to the headlights, and departure from aircooled. The IMS bearing didn't help either. Fact is though, you can do a 997 front end on these cars, and sell back most of the 996 front end parts for collision repair, to make back a lot of the money. In the end, you have a Porsche 911. I owned a 993 and frankly, I wasn't on the bandwagon for many reasons. Weird gearing, gear throws with no feel and the length of a bread truck, pedal positioning that's by no means "driver oriented" as it was harder to heel-toe than a Tacoma. In the end though, for the mod crowd, all those things can be fixed. In the bare bones, there is a great car there. Cheaper the better if you ask me, because Porsche prices are bloated.

Might be worth mentioning these cars do need the LN-Engineering Oiling upgrades at a minimum (bigger pan, deeper pickup, and C5/C6 Corvette Filter Adapter). I have a 996.1 C2 with the 3.4 and I’ll go ahead and say this publicly; it’s a better engine to drive in terms of fun than the 986.2 3.6 or the 997.1 3.6. It runs towards the redline like a motorcycle engine and the power band can be strengthened thoroughly with simple bolt ons. I’m at 300 whp before i upgraded to a 997.1 air intake and the car is really fun to drive. As for the push, he’s actually got too much rear tire. I upgraded from 265/18 to 285/18 on Continental Extreme Contact Sports and mine stays planted even when i wasn’t to do stupid stuff. The key to 996 setup is lowered, moderately stiffened springs, stiff anti sway bars, and moderately stiff dampers. The overly hard spring setup will cause the front to wash and the rear to snap. I’m at 225 front 285 rear, with 7mm spacers up front and 12mm spaces in the rear and it’s very neutral. Turns into a gentle, self correcting four wheel drift when at the limit. They were betrayed by their original OEM setups; they have a great chassis and engines with a lot potential. 👍😊

Widening the rear tires to reduce the risk of snap oversteer? That's a new one. Increasing the width increases the risk of snap oversteer! A narrower tire with a progressive design/compound is the solution to achieve progressive loss of traction. A wider tire will give you more overall lateral grip, but usually a less progressive breakaway point. Also, worrying about snap oversteer in a relatively low powered 911, particularly a C4, is a bit odd. They are very neutral with a tendency towards understeer. It's actually quite hard to provoke oversteer unless you're giving the car very silly exaggerated inputs.

Held back by those outrageous rear tyres (would put 275s maybe ?) and the loooong final drive. Otherwise, do want.

Quick question. Am I just missing the Lap Time for the silver Mustang you guys built or is that time not on here?
@yanal06115 жыл бұрын
Does Toronto Motor Sports Park have any open lap days where we can come and just practice? I'm getting a Miata soon and I am trying to find a nice track to get into tracking and just learn as much as I can.

Yes. They have a lot of them. More than their drag strip has test and tunes. In fact they had open lapping yesturday.

Isn't some old WRX Sti better bargain? Definitely cheaper maintenance and not much slower than old 996.

What's going on with that red LS swapped 911 from a while back? I think a short stroke LS engine into a 996 would make a great future project 😁

I have this exact car with a 376 crate ls3. It pulls nice.

Should I or should i not replace my S2000 with a 996 (40th Anniversary, 4S, Turbo)
@joshfenton79184 жыл бұрын
I would not recommend it. I actually went from a 996 back to an S2000. S2K is much better. It's better balanced, more fun to drive, and most importantly, far more reliable and durable for track use. 996s are ticking time bombs, especially if you want to track it. The only exception is a Turbo or GT2/GT3 which still use the much better Metzger motor.

Question for the owner. Who rewrapped your steering wheel?
@stevenlopez4125 жыл бұрын
Daniel Willett its a whole new wheel from a newer model and then refinished. Can’t recall details on who/how it was done, bought it off a forum a few years ago

They’re amazing cars so long as the engine doesn’t eat itself.
