Modify Iphone Craddle Into Storage Box with USB Charger Audi TT Mk2

A short guide how to convert iphone wiring to the usb charging cable and simply modify the middle craddle/holder to become a storage compartment. No special car parts needed, you can re-use the old craddle and cables.

dr sunka i need your help, is it possible to add a secondary 12v socket by feeding off the original one? maybe by intercepting the 12v feed behind the dash and running a new one under the seat or something? (wire would be run under the trim) i don't like the position of the original one and i can't find any help online on how to do it. but i know that you'd be able to find a way, you're basically the God of TTs

Typically, the best solution is to add a new fuse (any empty spot), then run 12 V from the fuse box directly, underneath carped or behind trims, to wherever you need it.

Hi there. I live in Canada. I bought a charging cable adapter at the place that sold me my Android smart phone that plugs into the cigarette lighter. When I'm not using it, I store the cable in the storage compartment under the passenger seat. Also, my car came with a factory rubber shelf that goes in place of the cradle that you removed. Another guy on KZbin shows how replace the cradle with the factory made shelf and he even provides the part numbers.

Cool to see that someone has already tried it. I figured that it would not supply the right voltage and amperage for modern smartphones. My alternative idea would be to use a low-profile 12v charging adapter plug in a USB cable with a flat right-angle connector and running it through the center tunnel to that storage cradle. But that seems like a buttload of work, so for now I'll just have a visible USB cable flopping about when I need to charge my phone and stow it in the glovebox when I don't need it. but the idea of using this fabric tape to cover over where the phone cradle has been is great. I will try that, before I order an expensive storage panel to replace the cradle with. Thank you very much!

My TT doesn’t have the phone bracket, it has the blank shelf with the rubber mat. My plan is to see if I can integrate a MagSafe charger under the mat somehow. Most likely involves making a big hole in the plastic underneath. Yeah that will also be a buttload of work, but that’s what you gotta deal with if you want a completely invisible installation 🤷‍♂️

Great idea to put in a magsafe charger thinking the same - Is there a spliceable switched live under the rear seats anywhere which could supply adequate voltage to the magsafe rather than tearing the front console apart? Oh and where would you advise connecting the grounding wire on the magsafe? Hope it goes well for all our sakes!! @@H0704

@@Kuldeepbhandal haven’t done anything about it yet. I don’t even know if the phone bracket cable is there. I would probably get a 12V to usb adapter and splice it to the back of the 12V outlet by the cup holder, then plug the MagSafe right in.

would i be able to power my footwell LED lights with it? i want to convert that power into a cigarette lighter socket because i hate the location of the original one. i can't find any info or doing it though

It's kinda pointless. There is already a 12V supply in the center console and would make a lot more sense to connect 12V usb charger to that. It's not a good idea to just start connecting things as you are doing and hoping something will work. You are connecting your phone to 9V! It drops to 5V cos that supply cannot handle the current draw you are putting on it. so again, you are putting 9V on the phone and then stressing that supply beyond what it was designed for. This connects a phone to your radio and the car antenna etc so doing things like this without knowing what you are doing could blow your car radio or something else if you are not careful, or not so lucky. If you are going to test things like this, you should get a proper load device, they are cheap on ebay etc, you already have most of the tools required so it's worth it. Then you can control the current draw etc, so that you can start it low, and bring it up gradually, so that you can see if there are any issues before putting full load on it. Imagine you change phones to a phone that draws more current for fast charge, and then something fails etc.

Well you sir have a good point. It's true that it does not work well for all the phones. However, at least removing the *** iPhone station and having just a nice shelf there is already a big plus.

Hi. 1. Make sure that you identify usb-C power and ground correctly. 2. Try each combination of the cables with car in ignition AND car running. Perhaps you have different iPhone module. 3. If for some reason you are not getting sufficient current/voltage at back (happened in some cases - don't know why)... have this middle craddle as storage only and buy yourself a cigarette 12V to USB adapter. ;)

Hi I have tried . And im getting 12v from blue and orange. However the currents is only 5mA thats why i couldn't charge i belive. I check the fuse and its say 5A. I put the clothing tape it looks good. Thanks for the idea

Suthan EE same problem here. I even got a 12v to 5v 3a usb converter but no luck...
