Modifying Peco O Gauge Turnouts

I do similar to sleepers and timbers on Peco 'points', your way is very neat. I also modify the check rails and the crossing nose vee (frogs) too - for a cosmetic improvement. Peco points in O are a curate's egg, in that they look very GWR in design, but have three bolt chairs and other issues. I did sit and work out that these points represented - but didn't - at least two of the big four's company patterns for 'switches and crossings' but also failed by a country mile too. But theyre resonably expedient and are fairly robust for outdoor usage too. In the past Ive even made my own Crossing Nose Vees etc for them (to stop wheel drop), but life is too short now, so I merely, cosmetically, modify them and use a proprietary insert to stop wheel drop. Can these points be wired without the tortoise point motors i only have surface mounted point motors as I seem to get on better with these.

Yes, you certainly can. If you are using them 'out of the box', then all you will need to do is sort out a linkage to the tie bar. If you are applying the modifications I describe in this video, then you will require a motor with an associated switch as this is used to power the crossing - this is why I used Tortoise to provide that switch.
