Having watched parts one and two multiple times prior to getting started, other than breaking things free after 16 years of Wisconsin winters, this went smoothly. Especially considering I had only ever changed the oil before. Thank you for putting this together!!

I just wanted to say thank you, sincerely. I am a college kid on a college budget, and when I found out that my clutch needed to be replaced at $2,500, I was devastated. The only thing I had ever done on a car is change the oil, so jumping to a clutch was quite drastic for me. But because of your two videos, I was able to change it over the weekend for less than $200. Thank you again for what you do, and keep it up! Love your videos.
@ModMINI9 жыл бұрын
ian mcclure Thanks for the note! That's how I got started actually - I bought a junk car in college for $500, the next day the transmission went out. I'd never worked on cars before. My friend suggested I buy a junkyard transmission, let me borrow his tools and his driveway, gave me a Chilton manual, and said "ask me if you have any questions." This was on a front wheel drive car. I somehow managed to do the job and have been wrenching on cars ever since.
@ianmcclure23379 жыл бұрын
***** It's definitely a gratifying experience, I can see why you haven't stopped. Now I feel like I can do anything on my mini. The first thing that I did was go out and buy the Chilton manual and my dad let me borrow his tools. It definitely wasn't easy, but it was SO worth it! On a side note, I also saw that your assistant mechanic in this video had a Q13 Fox News shirt on, which is what me and my family watch haha. Do you happen to live near the Seattle area? You dont need to say if you do or not, I just thought it was a funny observation. Anyways, keep doing what you're doing cause you help lots of people who find themselves in similar positions like mine (and have a frustrating time reading Chiltons manuals haha).

Having got this far, I would always replace the rear main seal behind the flywheel as a precaution. It’s the same steps repeated if it goes a few months later, and it’s likely to spray oil on your shiny new clutch. And it’s cheap. Great videos though, I love your explanations. Simple and easy to follow..cheers.

Finished my job today without any issues thanks to your great video. Failure was due to a fracture of the welded fork that pushes the thrust bearing onto the pressure plate. The result of the fracture was to force the bearing so unevenly that it was digging into the fingers of the pressure plate and eventually peeled the bearing apart. Had a nasty late problem when changing the engine oil (not part of the clutch repair) to find that a careless former owner has stripped the thread of the drain plug. The original plug is a 14mm thread, thankfully my local parts shop had a 15mm repair kit, comprising a 15mm tap and 15mm plugs. Now as good as new. The only variations in my procedure versus the video was that I removed the plastic housing block of the gear change from the gearbox which is held on by 3 x 10mm bolts and I also removed the alloy mounting bracket for the clutch slave cylinder to improve access to attach an engine support.

@ModMINI10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. That's an odd problem. Considering the spring force from the pressure plate, it is unusual for a pedal to stick halfway. I'll keep your resolution in mind in case I come across the same symptoms.

***** Thanks. After replacement, the clutch pedal no longer sticks and shifting is again smooth. However, my mechanic stated that I need to replace the clutch. Recommends a single mass clutch flywheel (Valeo) to replace the OEM dual. My car is a 2005 Cooper S with 101k miles on it. What are your thoughts? Should I wait a bit further until the clutch goes or just go ahead and do it?
@ModMINI10 жыл бұрын
mjo23dan What is his rationale for recommending the clutch replacement? The solid Valeo flywheel clutch kit is a great alternative to OEM and I recommend it as well. If your clutch is working fine, I don't see any need to replace it now. Do it when you start to feel it slip.

You reminds me of my self . I worked on small engines and some auto stuff like doing rebuilds and replacing transmissions or clutches things like that . I am 60 now and just cant do it any more . But any time I get to the point where the damage occurred I always call the owner and have him come down and take a look at the damage . Before I do a job I always tell them the hrs it will take to do the job from the books . It is vary hard to do the job in a shorter time and in most cases it takes longer maybe a hr or two . I only charge what the book hrs said it will take . If it's more well I dont charge for that . I am just out on those hrs . I was always like that so they know what happen and what caused it . This was not a book telling me this but it is my own work ethic . In the 20 years I had done this and I dont know how many small engines I had worked with that in that time span I only had 2 mowers came back to me . One I had to remove the cost of that work and time to just replacing an engine . The other was an adjustment and a different type of locking nut . I never had anything else . I always got repeat people for tuneups and service work and new people coming in . I dont rip people off in trying to repair their weed eaters . I just dont do them . These weed eaters are 4 or 5 years old problems mostly crank seals and fuel systems . You have a good work ethics .

8:03 - you show 2 different throw out bearings. The one in your right hand - you say it's for the 06. I actually had that in my 03. May I ask - you (1) why would I have an 06 part in my 03. (2) It looks like that part (in your right hand), doesn't connect as there is no bracket - correct? It just 'floats' on the shaft? I ask you this because my new clutch kit came with a bearing that looks like the one in your left hand - so I just used the old one, as it looked correct - but again, didn't attach to anything. Can you confirm for me please? Thanks so much for your help!!

Wow, fantastic video. I just bought a 2005 mini. Have only driven it enough to fill it up once. I knew it had some issues, all the fluids leak. but the real trouble happened when It started popping out of 5th gear at highway cruising speed. then it started popping out of 2nd, then all the gears. (different trips but worse after each one). The last time I could drive it, it popped out of gear at first, then stopped popping out of gear but wouldn't go into gear at all. It went into gear if stepped on the gas for long enough to get home. Now it won't budge at all. I am afraid of not being able to find the right shop to fix it. I took it someplace to diagnose all that may be wrong with it when I was first buying it , but they, ah, didn't drive it to see if something was wrong with the clutch. They may not have been able to tell anyway, as it I had to drive across the island before it popped out of gear the first time. More symptoms. With the car off, I can move the stick around to the different gears.When I turn it on with the clutch pushed it, it's got some weird sounds. when I let out the clutch even in neutral, it bangs, and jumps and dies. It doesn't matter which gear it seems to be in, it does the same thing. It is hard to move it to other gears with the clutch in, but when i let it out, same thing, in any gear if I can even get it into one. Any ideas?

Maybe the common cause of what is believed to be clutch failure is allowing the fluid level in the combination brake/clutch fluid reservoir to get low. I had a problem with what I thought was the clutch until I did some research and discovered the reservoir for the brakes and the clutch is the some one. This means you must use the MINI commented brake/clutch fluid which is approved for the hydraulic clutch. If the brake fluid reservoir gets low (mine was) you may find the transmission hard to shift or maybe not possible. In my case filling the low brake fluid reservoir with the proper brake/clutch fluid fixed the problem....completely. Months later the clutch is still fine, and it cost about 5 bucks...

Do you recommend replacing the rear main seal every time the clutch is replaced? My car only has 61k and it does not appear to be leaking. Also noticed two of the clutch alignment dowel pins were sitting in the bell housing. Have you seen those come out before? Think that is what damaged the clutch.

Your video and instructions are awesome. I’ve got my daughters 2006 R50 back together and everything works except the linkage is messed up. On hers, the cable that moves the gear selector forward and back runs underneath the transmission mount. I am unable to run through all of the gears because when the selector on top of the transmission is in the highest position, it’s hitting the transmission mount. It’s almost like there should be a spacer between the transmission and the transmission mount to create a larger gap for the cable bushing to clear the transmission mount. Do you have any advice?
@markvanfrachen74628 ай бұрын
I figured it out. While I had the transmission out setting on an old tire, I must have slightly bent the gear selector arm. I just had to slide a crescent wrench on there and bend it back down less than a quarter of an inch.

What is the common cause for clutch/transmission failure with the Midland 5-speed? My 2003 R50 has a Midland 5-speed, and it shifts smooth and quietly, and I have had no problems. Is there a weak spot I should know about?? Maybe a way to shift it to make the failure less likely? I'm concerned, but not sure why?
@jonskjefte78703 жыл бұрын
You mentioned you had worked on a 2005 5 speed and recognized a difference in transmissions with this 2002 Mini. In 2005 and 2006 (2007 and 2008 for base model convertibles) Mini made a good decision to abandon the Midland 5 speed. They changed to a quality Getrag 5 speed in 2005. A lot larger transmission and weighs nearly twice as much. The Midland was simply to light and wasn't very durable.

@ModMINI7 жыл бұрын
2 quarts is about the right amount. You pump or pour in oil until it starts to leak back out of the fill hole (when car is level). Manual didn't mention correct oil type? You can add a Liqui-moly friction modifier to smooth out shifting. I used this stuff once on a noisy transmission and it quieted things down - amzn.to/2qwi1LY

Great videos! We just did the clutch in my sons 03-non-s. The TOB was destroyed and in pieces. Replaced the clutch and TOB, everything went back together decently easy. Now the car will not move, feels like it is stuck in neutral. I see shifter linkage moving, clutch slave moves,cv axles do not move,everything looks in place. It's not my car, so I don't know what it felt like before any problems , clutch pedal is light feeling and shifter feels very sloppy, my son said its normal and clutch is softer than normal but more firm than when it went all bad. It's acting like it is stuck in neutral. Any ideas what we can check?
@sikassscivic8 жыл бұрын
Jacked up the front of the car, when I spin the driver side tire, the passenger side moves. Used 75w90 transmission fluid. It may be overfilled but wouldn't be by much. I can't think of anything else other than bad internals? Before we did the clutch, we had it on jack stands and the driver side tire would rotate like normal so I'm not sure what could have happened since doing the clutch.
@ModMINI8 жыл бұрын
You might have air in the hydraulic. Newer clutch will have a lighter pedal and opposite wheel spin when car is in the air is normal for an open differential setup. Watch the slave cylinder while someone presses on it. If it does not smartly engage and move enough to push in the pressure plate, you probably have air in there.
@sikassscivic8 жыл бұрын
+Mod MINI it seems to move fine, if the clutch is not engaging wouldn't the tires spin all the time when its in gear? Best I can tell it is in gear but feels really sloppy , not sure if that's normal on these cars. When you move the shifter side to side, it moves the linkage up and down, when you move the shifter front and back it moves the linkage side to side.
@ModMINI8 жыл бұрын
The clutch does not affect shifter feel. The shifter should feel the same as it did before unless you damaged the shift cable bushings or assembled something incorrectly.

Not sure which plug you are referring. Can you mention the timestamp of the video? (such as 3:12) I'm guessing it's the coolant temperature sending unit wire. Behind/below the thermostat housing and easy to overlook.

***** Time stamp is at 25.09 you can see it coming out of the ecu harness its wrapped around it. checked part one also never see it taken off. Wouldnt be a problem normally but I had to wait for parts after disassembly. It actually looks like it layed on the ecu harness on mine into the battery box. But what do I know. I have pulled the bat box out again cant find anything open and noting it would reach to.
@ModMINI10 жыл бұрын
road warrior The skinny one is a ground wire. There is a 10mm nut and a threaded stud just underneath the transmission mount bracket. It goes to there.
@norcaladmin10 жыл бұрын
***** LOL not. your looking at something else. Never reach there. At 25.09 look above your right hand. You see the ecu plug above to right pushed out of the way. about 3 inches from plug in, a smaller lead comes off that harness and is wrapped around the harness with a plug at the end. Thats the one I cant find. But Thanks for a great how to seriously!!

road warrior Ok I see now. I checked my own car and it doesn't even have that connector (2004 Cooper S). I don't remember connecting that one - I suppose it's possible that it doesn't go to anything? Perhaps it is for the cars with JCW airbox?

Great video! Quick question. Clutch felt great but now at speed and I let off the gas my steering wheel shakes. Do I need an alignment or did I possibly not tighten something up enough? Thanks

Hey Do you know if a r56 cooper has a dual or singlemass flywheel and corresponding clutch plate? Pic in oem catalog shows a clutch plate without springs but all replacement clutch kits i find have clutchplate with springs. 🤯
@ModMINI5 жыл бұрын
For R56, Stock is dual mass flywheel with no springs in clutch disk for turbo, for non turbo it is a solid flywheel with springs in the disk.

Why does Amazon say that this won’t fit my 04 r50 ? I’m trying to convert to signal mass fly wheel too and can’t find anything. Could I possibly get some help?

On the top of the transmission is what looks like a plastic filler cap accessible when then mount and slave cylinder aren't in place. Can that be a fill location?
@ModMINI6 жыл бұрын
No. that is the breather tube. You fill via the upper plug on the bottom side of the transmission. It might be possible to add fluid through the breather but it would go in very slowly and you'd have no way to know if you have filled to the correct level.
@geraldvanwyngaarden28896 жыл бұрын
Thanks, removing the cap, shows it is just a hole about 5/8th inch dia. straight onto the transmission.. But I filled through the fill plug. Whoever put that plug in, should learn about torque. It took a Johnson bar to loosen it. Thanks for this video, it made the job possible. I'm about 12 hours in now- but nearly done. I'm an experienced but unorganized amateur mechanic working in a gravel driveway.

IM THINKING OF TAKING THIS JOB ON BUT MINE IS A 2005, WILL IT BE THE SAME AS THE 2002, IT'S A BIG JOB TO TAKE ON NEVER DONE IT BEFORE it be cheaper for the mechanic to do mine as i dont have the tools to do it and my them and do it its going to cost twice as much i found a clutch for £45 pounds on ebay some cheap make is is it a good idea to get it or do i get a valio? Great video thank you.
@ModMINI9 жыл бұрын
+runneryg Same as here, the shift link and slave cylinder location on transmission may be different. On an R50 the OEM clutch is perfectly fine. R50 has a standard solid flywheel.

hi Mod MINI, my 02 cooper none S the clutch pedal went to the floor because the slave cylinder was leaking. i did replace it and now the car will not start up the slave cylinder looks all the way out like when you step on the pedal I'm wondering i didn't bled it properly or is my clutch the problem thank you .
@ModMINI8 жыл бұрын
+Jonathan Sandiero Sorry but I can't really tell from your description. Just by itself, the slave cylinder should not be able to fully extend when installed. It needs hydraulic pressure to move the clutch/pressure plate. Try moving the release fork by hand. It should only move a very small amount by hand but a lot more when someone presses the clutch pedal. Does the clutch pedal move normally? Did you do any work inside the car? There is a starter interlock switch on the clutch pedal / clutch master cylinder which only allows the starter motor to turn when the pedal is fully depressed.

great mechanics eye view, useful tips as well, I'm not looking forward to swapping my 5 speed getrag box, but after watching these videos I'm much more confident. Anyone swapped a 5 speed getrag for a 6 speed cooper s box on a 2005 mini? is it much more work?
@ModMINI7 жыл бұрын
It can be done but you need to replace clutch, flywheel, throwout bearing, slave cylinder and hydraulic line, axles, shift cables and maybe the shift box too.

I have looked up Valeo kits in the UK and there are two styles, one 17 spline and one 18 spline. I also note that the thrust bearing housing has two tabs on each side for the 18 spline unit. Do you know which one is for which car? I have a 2005 R53 and hoping to buy the clutch before taking it apart as I want to get it done as quick as possible so the car stays on the road.

Sorry, I have no idea. I think the cutover was July 2004

Checked the fitment details on the website and yes from July/August 2004 was the change over!! Thanks for the help, I will be attempting this myself thanks to your videos.
@bills42755 жыл бұрын
both videos seem straight forward and well documented, all in all I know its been a few years but how long did you estimate it took from start to finish. Also what else to look for while your in there,, thanks
@ModMINI5 жыл бұрын
Work time varies so much depending on experience and tools available that it's almost meaningless to give an estimate.

I did a sucesfull clutch replacment! But now i have trouble switching in reverse and also 1st and 2nd gear are very hard to change. What could be the problem?

Great video. Is the throw out bearing supposed to wobble. It spins fine although has lots of play.
@ModMINI10 жыл бұрын
A new one? It is supposed to be loose on the guide tube. Can you quantify "lots of play"? There is some play within the bearing, maybe 0.5mm? Don't reuse an old throwout bearing!

Thank you very much for the videos! That helps a lot! Could you please tell me, in the newer minis, are there any differences in the procedure you did with this model?
@ModMINI8 жыл бұрын
After 2006 the drivetrain is totally different, but the general process is similar.

Hi , Thanks for taking he time and effort in putting these together. They are fabulous... I have a question for an r50 with the 5sp getrag. What are the main differences. You mention the clutch slave cylinder in a different place for example . Is the starter motor and are the shifter linkages mostly in the same positions ? Thanks again .
@ModMINI8 жыл бұрын
I assume you are asking because you are considering swapping for a six speed. Starter motor is in the same location but I think the starter motor pinion gear is different. Shift linkage is totally different as are the axles. The flywheel weighs more on the R53 which could cause drivability issues. I have heard from someone who did a 6 speed swap and regretted it. If you are talking about a 5 speed to a 5 speed swap, you won't have the drivability problems but you may have all those other problems. I know linkage and hydraulics are different. I don't know if axles/starter are same or different so you'd have to research that.

On the midlands, can you fill the oil through the black breather tube on top?
@ModMINI8 жыл бұрын
Probably possible, but not really recommended. It would be really slow going as tube is very narrow and there is no way for the displaced air to get out. Also, there is no way to know if you have overfilled or underfilled the case. Correct level is when oil just starts to spill back out of the fill plug hole when car is stopped level.

Whats the best clutch kits to fit back into a 2002 mini cooper with the midland box ?
@ModMINI10 жыл бұрын
Stock setup is probably just fine for that, since the flywheel is already a single mass setup. You might even not have to replace the flywheel.
