that's because right now, they're business is to move everyone to the cloud. In my opinion, this is not the right time for modular phones, because the tech industry hasn't reach their lowest costs of production yet. Therefore, making it now will be more expensive than waiting for a year or so. Google is the perfect company to make this work because their money is not on building phones, but to get more people to use them

I think the most effective way to deal with this is to keep a configuration file with the components and the SDK needs to have a master configuration and build automation tools which reads the configuration in the components and updates the software build and libraries automatically when a module is swiped without making any changes in the high level code.

The thing about electronics nowadays is that the circuit connecting everything together is very compact and everything is super densely packed. This is the reason Apple is getting rid of the audio jack, cos it takes up too much space. Having modular parts means every part needs some sort of mechanism to attach it to the circuit, which consumes space, which is hard to engineer into the same form factor.
@AethersHill8 жыл бұрын
The issue isn't that the phones are too compact and modular phones would take up too much space. The issue is: how do you convince these huge smartphone companies to cater to a relatively small consumer group and potentially lose money at the same time. Rather than soldering cpus and gpus to a motherboard, you'd be creating a motherboard with attachments nodes in place of where those specifics parts may or should be. It may initially take up more space but it shouldn't take up much more space that it's not do-able. But how do you justify modular phones to these huge companies? They'd surely be losing a LOT of money if these became widespread, more commonly bought than traditional smartphones. The reason we want modular phones is that they'd be more economical for us the consumer. Also, the decision to get rid of the audio jack wasn't just a size constraint. It was also a chance to create more profit. It creates more of a market for wireless headphones/earbuds which Apple could market to their consumers. It pushes previous iPhone users to upgrade to the latest iPhone because of the very obvious difference ("You have a headphone jack, you don't have the newest iPhone"). It allows them to put more tech into the iPhone allowing them to raise the price without lowering the cost-performance. There are so many reasons why Apple could justify removing the jack. But how do you justify modular phones to these companies?
@darthtony1238 жыл бұрын
Its not a simple matter of adding a socket. Pretty much the entire computer is in a single chip and the rest of the(supporting) circuitry is custom to it. You cannot simply lift it up and replace it with a newer one. The market is entirely different from the PC one where you get compatible motherbards/chipsets and cpus. There is no compatibility within the SoC that are used so you would need a lot of extra circuitry to make it work. I wont say its impossible but it sounds highly inpractical. The whole thing with these mobile devices is high integration, it doesnt really go well with modularity.
@themattenthehat8 жыл бұрын
The problem with modular smartphones (right now) is that phone tech is evolving too quickly. Right now most people upgrade their smartphone around once every two years. In those two years, CPU performance has roughly doubled (Galaxy s4 Geekbench score 644, galaxy s6 Geekbench score 1255). It is unlikely that the same performance increase could be made by swapping in a new processor that is still limited to the same old connection as the old one. The same is true for the camera, the storage, memory (RAM), etc. The modularity would end up being wasted if you actually wanted to keep up with the developing tech because you'd constantly need an updated backbone/motherboard/module connections in order to take advantage of the latest and greatest modules. The same thing is essentially true of desktop computers (if you want the latest CPU you need a new motherboard, if you want to be able to use the new usb 3.1 you need a new motherboard, if you want to be able to use the fancy new nvme SSDs you need a new motherboard, etc.). It is just less noticeable on desktops because most people tend to upgrade/replace them less frequently than we do smartphones.

I feel like we are now ready to revisit this idea because a lot of this tech is now viable especially when we live in a world where people don't really buy a phone every 2 years anymore. But if you were to advertise just one aspect of the phone being sold at a time we will be more enticed to make that small purchase at a time which was the original idea. Except it was in an entirely different market now it would actually work.
@GuiltyFighterX8 жыл бұрын
I think modular phones can't be that far away; I mean, the market today is getting smarter and the phones are so good, that many people don't have the urge to get in line to try to get the latest model. Now combine that with the fact that the main phone manufacturers play it safe and that there hasn't been a revolutionary idea for quite some time and the fact that 3D printing is more affordable, all of which are great factors to see some new ideas to come to reality.

The main challenge for fully-modular smartphones, imho, is the component size. For comparison, desktop CPUs are modular, while nettops HDMI sticks are not. SoC, for example, requires MUCH less space than separating CPU, RAM and GPU.

If you have built a PC even once in your life, or researched on how to build one. Then you should immediately know that a completely modular phone is impossible. It's the same old problem that PC's have: "Oh, I want to change my CPU, or my GPU or RAM" Well, that is going to be tough, because of the fact that to change a CPU or GPU you would also need to change your motherboard so that your CPU or GPU are all compatible with one another. You can't just put a 2080 GPU in any motherboard you find. You have to get a motherboard that is compatible with that GPU, and then also find a CPU which has to be also compatible for the motherboard as well as ideally the GPU (preventing bottlenecks). That is why there will be at most semi-modular phones, where you get to swap out the camera (Thought it will still be constrained to the outdated motherboard after a while, so you will be limited there too.), battery, speakers and audio jack. (Even though, I think that the audio jack and speaker swap might be the hardest to implement out of all of these.) Hope my explanation helped out people, to understand why it is impossible.

Modular is all BS. Even pc's are not modular. You have to upgrade the ram with new motherboards and cpu. Its only truly modular for half a generation and then all new parts anyway. The only thing on my pc from 10 tens ago is the power supply, case and fans. I wouldn't get my hopes up about modular smartphones if I were MKBHD. It's a failure from the start.

It's simply meant to be cool. Nothing about a modular device would be practical, and with our current technology it wouldn't even be economical. I'll bet in the next two years when the first commercially available modular device comes out people would pin it against the 'non-modular' smartphone and it'll be a total disappointment.

The ergonomics of a modular phone would be weird. The thought behind phonebloks was that you'd simply put together a phone based on a blank canvas but then there's always going to be limitations. There's less profit in modular phones.. which might explain why you don't see a strong push in that direction.
@vgamesx18 жыл бұрын
Well not necessarily, while no they couldn't sell you an $800 phone anymore they could however still sell the individual modules for a little bit more, for example since most products have a 300%-400% markup from their actual cost you could sell the modules at a 400%-500% markup, let's say it costs $20 to make a good camera, so about $100 retail for a camera replacement, would that not be reasonable? Not only that, but some people might buy these modules as often as yearly compared to getting a new phone every 2-4 years, so if done right, there's the potential for both more profit and a steadier stream of it as well. I'd say the biggest reason is because it's a heck of a lot more expensive to make a modular phone than one little package and that's it.

It is actually SUPER EASY to make it happen problem is that then all phone companies will go down. To make it reality, you should ask manufacturers of computer parts to join smartphone game.

Modular phones will never be a successful thing. Companies make more money selling a new phone rather than a new camera module.

PCs are successful. However these aren't going to be successful if they don't allow replacing pretty much everything, including the CPU and all that.
@jackthorpe568 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's the standard today, that's what companies like Apple and Samsung do. other companies will take the profit hit and make these phones, taking market share from the big two. If Samsung and Apple don't follow, they will do a Nokia
@Ssshrugs8 жыл бұрын
Pc's aren't comparable to modular phones since they are made up of parts sold by different manufacturers. Yes, there are companies selling pre-build Pc's which allow the user to upgrade parts, but those are sold for a massive premium to an entirely different target audience, which makes upgrading stupid. There's only one thing that will make or break this idea, and that is whether or not there is a market for such products. I'm fairly sure that (just like Marques says in the video) there isn't enough demand for a fully modular phone. Also companies make a shit ton more selling a completely new flagship phone every two years (which is the lifespan that smartphones are being designed for nowadays) than they will by selling separate modules which allow users to update their phones bit by bit. It's just not a viable business plan and it's not going to happen.

I'd assume they'd offer some kind of back cover that comes with the phone or that you can buy separate like the oodles of iphone cases you can buy. They just don't show it here so you can see how the phone works.

If we were able to buy a seperate CPU, GPU, RAM and essentials that a phone needs, nobody would buy the new model of a phone and instead would just buy a new module for the new CPU, GPU, RAM etc. In the end, companies think more about actually staying alive rather than fulfilling all the customer's needs.
@drewman44418 жыл бұрын
Making an awesome product will get my money. Being a greedy bitch won't get you my money.
@legionfighter67898 жыл бұрын
***** If you think about it, being a greedy bitch is pretty necessary if a company wants to stay alive in the already overcrowded market. Once a product stops selling and becomes more and more of a thing of the past, the companies make a new one. But if we have a device that basically is here and stays forever, what will happen to competition?
