modulus flea bass funk jam live

This was a fun improvisational funk jam that we played at my church during a cd release concert. Used an EHX q-tron for the main riff, and a boss odb3 bass overdrive for the solo part. You get a good idea of just how funky and aggressive this bass can get. Some great solos in this jam! It was such an honor to play with such amazing, talented musicians.

I'm using the q-tron plus. not the new black one though, it's the old big metal box. actually stopped worked after this jam, so i bought an old metal box regular q-tron. never tried the micro, but I'm sure it will give you the same funky sounds. have fun with that!

thank you very much! flea has definitely been the biggest influence as far as my playing style goes. nothing beats the modulus tone. ferocious and in your face just how I like it. you'll definitely stand out when you get a modulus.

thank you! and yes the bass sounds amazing. most describe it as a stingray on steroids. you definitely won't regret getting one. the graphite neck is so fast, and if you set your action low you get that nice growly bite. best bass i've ever owned or played, hands down.

qtron is set as follows: drive: up, boost mode. mode: LP. range: LO and the gain notch is set just a little before the 2nd line, peak knob is set a little before the top line if that makes sense. you're gonna wanna set the gain and peak knobs a little different depending on your bass, that's just what works for my modulus. the ODB-3 is set with the bass eq just past 12 o'clock, treble eq at about 1, balance is around 11, level is almost full up, and gain is slightly turned up. hope that helps!

thanks a lot man! flea is probably my biggest influence as far as my playing style. the flea basses are great pieces of equipment. The silver big flake was always my favorite flake finish, so it's cool you have one! I've never tried the LP pickups, but I know they sound great. Mine has the basslines pickup in it which also sounds pretty damn good. this is definitely the best bass I've ever owned and had the pleasure of playing, hands down. anyways, thanks for watching and the kind words!

I have the seymour duncan basslines pickup in mine, and the aguilar obp-3 preamp. it's a great combo. as far as EQ goes, (on the amp) I usually scoop the low mids quite a bit, add just a little bit of high mids, and then boost the bass and treble. On the modulus, I cut back the bass knob just a little and roll off the treble quite a bit because it's a very bright bass. I also recommend DR nickel lo-rider strings + low action. that = growl.

haha thanks man! this was at south hills assembly in bethel park, pa. we play a lot of contemporary upbeat stuff there, and on that night they wanted an instrumental in between songs, so this is what they got. We all definitely have a chemistry when we play. unfortunately, the piano player is moving to texas in a few days, so he will no longer be playing. and yeah man, modulus basses are the way to go. I've never played a better bass. love the bite it has. thanks again for the kind words!

thanks! just check out some of my other comments down below for the EQ setting on the effects. for the bass, i slightly turn the bass eq down and the treble down almost half way cause it's a very bright bass. and i didn't use an amp in this performance, I was in a direct box and went straight to the house speakers. hope that helps!

I have the old metal box standard q-tron, although the one i use in this video is the +. anyways, mode is set in "lp" range is "lo" and the switch up top should be in "boost" mode. peak and gain knobs should be adjusted according to your bass. my peak is almost at the top notch and the gain is set right before the 2nd bottom line. just play with those til your bass starts to quack. hope that helps!

it's ok! and i've never really "studied" the bass, as in on a school/college level but i have practiced a whole lot and played with a lot of good musicians. I studied sight reading from a book but other than that I just taught myself. practice makes perfect and you can never practice enough.

no, not really. that's for the most part the natural sound of a modulus. things to take in to consideration though: I have my action set VERY low and I do "dig in" quite a bit meaning I play pretty hard, so that adds to the growly bite that you hear in this jam. So if you play soft it might not get quite the crunch, but it'll still be there.
