In this video, I show how to make concrete countertops for my abandoned building kitchen renovation series. To make these concrete countertops, I went out to Fishstone's concrete artisan studios, so we could see how to make ultra high-end concrete countertops, which typically sell for around $100 per square foot. To make the countertops, we used a glass fiber reinforced concrete mix. And we end the video by installing the concrete countertops in my kitchen at the abandoned building.

We charge £1000 per sqaure meter minimum. The silly things you see me make can be double that and some. Great risks require rewards to make it worth it. For anybody reading this. Take it from me after nearly 7 years doing this. Concrete is a hard way to make easy money; there's much easier ways. You do this for passion firstly and to earn a living. Not to be a millionaire as most seem to believe 😄

Definitely a perception thing with the labor cost. A question of someone saving that 9k and taking it on themselves with a little bit of help. Very similar to when I had a contractor quote me 115k for a 30x30 garage while another knocked it out for only $40k and did a fantastic job.

Looks great. Love the design aesthetic. No critiques here - one option for your sink. In my place I added a instant on hot water dispenser. Same style as your faucet and under mount. Kohler brand. We love it and you have tons of room if you want to add it later. Great for coffee or hot water for cleaning. My concrete dining table was made about 18 years ago. Jealous at how the technology has come along. Your counter weighs less than my table. Thanks for blurring out your dogs junk. Don't want to get any pups excited. Great job.

Stellar! Very likely going to go with concrete counters vs epoxy when the time to redo our kitchen comes around. Having done both laminate and epoxy kitchens I would choose laminate for it's durability and options.... although epoxy is kinda fun. But concrete is more durable than both.

I don't know how much stone countertops cost in the Chicago area but around here they end up being $70-120 a square foot depending on options and how wild you want to go. For the fairly modest difference in cost and compared to some of the drawbacks that stone can have, concrete seems like a fairly strong contender.

I absolutely love it I just wish you'd done some up for the backsplashes as well. But overall it's a gorgeous countertop. Also something you forgot to talk about is how concrete counter tops age... Sealers prevent some stains but over time they will pick up scratches and stains like drink rings and the like. To me this isn't a negative... I love the look of aged surfaces and the way concrete stains is pretty awesome, in my book. But for others thinking about this you need to be aware of this so you aren't disappointed. For me it's something I love about my counters.

Also beware, who does your concrete counter tops. If done wrong they stain and chip really easy. You can get a dark grey quartz countertop that looks almost exactly like concrete, except it doesn't stain at all and is much more polished. If you want to be able to place your hot pans on the countertop, then avoid sealed concrete and quartz and stick to granite primarily.
@patrickgolladay6913

@Teh_Yeet
@Teh_Yeet 2 жыл бұрын
@@patrickgolladay6913 Well it depends what type of quartz you get. There are certain types that get a little more agitated than others, like pure white for example. that stuff stains super ez. I guess it all depends on the surface finish of the piece. If you get a quartz top with a glossy finish and a good brand, getting that to stain is very difficult. Compared to concrete its day and night. If you take Marble for example, that stuff also stains easier than quartz, because it is a relatively soft material in comparison. But you are absolutely right, quartz does stain too if you choose the wrong quality that's for sure.

This feels very much "Japanese 1000 layer folded Katana". Cool in principle, but a modern forged steel sword (even if Katana shaped) will perform just as well (or probably better) with significantly less effort. No idea why not just use a vibrating table to set it nicely tho. But considering our cost (eu) is around 50-100 eur per cubic meter of concrete... yea this seems insanely expensive, there are costs with the custom made shells tho.

@@bears23rely With Modustrial's method you have to use something to push the bead into the corner and shape it into a curve, otherwise it is just a round bead. With 'My' method, that is already done - you just need to wipe off the excess (With practice, there is none - control the speed and delivery). Usually, builders use their finger to round the bead. This introduces bacteria into the caulk (When using in a kitchen/bathroom) and the mold shows up a few years later. If you must use a finger, wrap it in a glove or plastic bag.

exactly. the whole reason for concrete counters is pour in place diy for $500. plus pour in place you can make that large piece by the sink 1 piece instead of 2. use Z forms and save all that time with the melamine forms. Just stumbled upon this video and I wanted to say how much I appreciated it as a professional. You showed what actually goes into these concrete countertops. There’s a lot out there it’s challenging to constantly combat the bad information when talking with potential clients who have been “doing homework” on the internet. Tom’s always been a great guy in this industry and I don’t think I’ve ever heard a bad thing about him. Great video Man and beautiful countertops!

Honestly the first concrete countertop video i've seen that made me want them. Nothing against the folks who like the self-poured style, just not my thing. These look great though.

This is definitely something - normally I would associate concrete with something rough, 'unpolished', with inconsistent surface (in terms of looks, not the actual feel, cause it would be a pain in the ass to use a rough concrete countertop on a daily basis). But these countertops look absolutely like a top-shelf, super-premium product - this is really impressive. And very interesting design-wise, taking an industrial product to a completely different level, where it seemingly would not belong. Hats off!

I've never been a real fan of concrete counter tops because they look unfinished. These countertops? Definitely changed my mind. I would seriously consider doing this kind of concrete counter in my projects.
