I'm planning on starting my build on Galactica this week, you did an amazing job on yours! I've only ever lit one model up before, Revell's Voyager. I used heat shrink to connect LEDs and fibre optics, but the aluminium tubing is absolute genius, I might have to steal that!
@andrewsartscalemodels5 жыл бұрын
Haha. Glad you liked the build mate. I have used tubing in a number of builds now. Always works well. Just make sure the glue gun isn't too hot as it may damage the fibers.
@Parabueto5 жыл бұрын
@@andrewsartscalemodels Aye, found out the hard way and not only managed to ruin the fitting I was making but also knocked the gun over and fused all the different stands of my stored fibres together in multiple places! I originally tried directly adhering the strands to the LED with hot glue but obviously doesn't work because the optics just dissolve. Out of curiosity what voltage do you normally work with? I've only really worked with 12v because I also build model boats that all run at that voltage so it makes rigging a power supply a lot easier, but I discovered that some resistors in LED strip lights can get uncomfortably warm in units designed for 12v. Thinking for projects like this with only a few individual lights a 9v square would do?
@andrewsartscalemodels5 жыл бұрын
@@Parabueto I thought I was the only one that managed to make a mess like that lol. Annoying isn't it. I mostly stick to 3v or 6v. Depends on the project. I recently built a cylon raider with 3x 3mm leds running 3v and it works fine. I can't recall 100% What I used on this. I thing it was a 3v and 6v power supply. I prefer to add more power supplies than increase the voltage, but that's just personal preference. The most I have done is 3 power supplies on a star destroyer. 2x6v and 1x3v

I feel that an amount of pitting could added to the forward facing faces to suggest strikes by rocks, space dust etc. Maybe a bit of body damage from Cyclon attacks. All that said, I think this is the BEST build of Galactica I have see on You Tube, thank you for posting it.

I'm just finishing a Battlestar build, (mostly) following your format. It was so helpful to have your video. I found the fit of the two main hull sections a big issue. A) the instruction manual did not match the pieces when attaching the front section to the body, and B) the flight bays seemed to be too big, so the top hull would not fit over them. Really weird. I fixed it with filing & putty, but it was a pain. I didn't use fibre optics - 1mm SMDs instead with a diffuser lens (microsol + red paint). The end result is fabulous - your mix of colouration really works for me. Thanks!

Looks good. I used 9mm pure white LEDs for car sidelights for the engines, which give a good colour match for the whiter engine glow of the initial miniseries and Season one, warm white LEDs for the landing decks in the pod arms and six individual 1mm LEDs along each pod retraction recess upper (I initially put in five per side based on what I could see from the DVDs, but Season Two uses a different angle shot of the fleet and made my mistake glaringly obvious, so I opened it up and rectified it). I have the enhanced gun and deck decal kit, Acreation armour decals (so horrible to work with!) and carved out the undercut of all the armour, which took weeks. Flattening the step at the back of the head section was the easy bit - now I’m sorting the profile of the flight pods, which are too triangular at the back outboard sections and fitting ribs and docking tubes inside the landing bays. It seems never ending.
@andrewsartscalemodels5 жыл бұрын
Haha! I thought I was bad. That's sounds like a heck of a build mate. Sadly the Moebius kits are not the best kits about but they do the job. I was originally going to do the white engines as well but the customer wanted the blue ones. Thanks for watching mate. I really appreciate it
@nickboylen68735 жыл бұрын
Andrews Art & Scale models Blue engine lighting is also correct - they clearly became blue as the series progressed. The insides of the nozzles also became very different, gaining multiple gas hob burners in place of the single spike. A bit like how they retconned the nuke launchers in the episode with the temple on the algae planet and the name plate lettering on the pods became raised (how come the crew had the time and resources to do that but not to get the stud pod operational again, even just for landings? Priorities, people! 😉). I’m a glutton for punishment, and this is why my build only gets attention for a few days each year!

The only complaint I have on this build is the wiring used for the LED's. These things draw a few milliamps of current at most. Lighter wiring could have been used along with heat shrink to prevent any shorts. Wondering why blue LED's were not used in the engine pods. I'm an electronics design engineer so I may be picky in the electrical side. Nice build! ! !
@andrewsartscalemodels4 жыл бұрын
I agree. However I have a very difficult time getting the lighter guage wire. I would love to use it as it will save a heap of space. Same issue with the LEDs. Can't always find what I need and if I can the prices are often prohibitive. I have learned to make do with what I can reliably get lol. Glad you liked the build. 👍

I know I'm severely late to the game, but if I could make a comment about your wiring (for your DC power to your LEDs). Isn't the gauge wire you're using a bit heavy? I mean, LEDs don't really pull that much current so wouldn't a smaller gauge wire be a bit more easy to use in construction. I know it can be a pain to initially solder, but the room you gain inside the model (I feel) would be a pretty good benefit. Just as a passing comment.
@andrewsartscalemodels4 жыл бұрын
Yep. 100% correct. Problem is most of the time I cant get a smaller gauge wire where I am so I am forced to use the thicker wire. Even online I struggle to find it where the cost isn't prohibitive.
