I think you should have removed the cover plate. It would have made it easier to remove the pin without fear of scratching the plate.

Thank you! I was scared to just pull on this thing. It’s not really doing the push pull method that the tool is meant for because those tabs get in the way but I was able to get mine out just like this. Just made the tool snug and just use a little elbow grease. I started turning to the left and right the little tabs actually helped make the cartridge come out. It seemed like I needed to break the tabs off or some thing first and then use the push pull action of the tool as intended. I’ve seen other videos where there’s a slot in the puller to allow the tabs to come through.

If you have shut-off valves installed for your shower there is no need to shut off your main water supply line to the rest of your home. I've replaced my shower/tub cartridge as well. Having shut-off valves installed for every shower, tub, sink, etc will allow you to do various replacements like this without disrupting the rest of water supplies throughout the rest of your home. I did end up buying the retraction tool to get the old valve out. I do recommend reaching your finger into the the pipe after removing the old valve to make sure there are no sharp edges where the valve is seated, as that can cause the rubber valves to tear. If you feel a sharp edge, then take a wire brush in to try to smooth that out. Wonderful video showing one way to use the extraction tool as there are a few ways to use it. Thank you so much!

Thanks for posting this! Even with the tool mine was stuck because the black rubber on both sides was folding as I was pulling out. Since it was out about an inch out I grabbed it with some channel locks and twisted as I pulled on the tool. Came right off.

Thank you, and thumbs up on the video. It is almost always easier to just use the correct tools the first time. I tried the plyers, and several other clever ideas. After hours of sweating, frustration, and failure I just went down and got the removal tool. It took less than 3 minutes. Lesson learned on this one.

You're missing the point of this tool. If you pull on the tool you're also pulling on the pipes behind the wall. You might as well just pull on the valve. You're supposed to turn the nut which will pull the cartridge while pushing against the valve body.

You didn't use the puller to it's full and designed use. The large nut is supposed to be turned down so the threads push against the valve and back the cartridge out. Very important step to break loose any corrosion inside of the valve. This protects from pulling directly on the valve and possibly causing a lead in your plumbing. Which is not good.

Wow it was easy to pull out but having a difficult time replacing it. Inc fact I’m already 1.5 hours. The issue is water is running when shut as soon as I open main water line.

Update. I inserted cartridge this time without twisting left and right. Still I had a hard time pushing the last 1/4 of an inch. I ended up using plastic block that came with the cartridge and twisted it left and right carefully. Worked!

The screw is stuck in my cartridge. Will the puller still work even if i cant screw in the top?

You didn't clean out the valve body..?? What about lube on the 0-rings? Those aren't plastic pieces there rubber seal pads.?? Draining other fixtures before? Many miss steps..??

Hopefully you still check the comments on this video. That black thing you remove right after the handle is not coming off for me and I feel like just pulling harder isn't the right move. Any tips?

I believe it just connects into the threading of the cartridge. I assume it's the screw that's stuck? I don't see much issue with really cranking on the screw or applying outwards force if prying. If not the screw, you could pry straight out with a screwdriver or pry tool. But I would avoid cranking side to side (since you could damage your plumbing).

@@TheTruckGuy I was able to get the screw out of the black thing but the black thing is still stuck and won’t budge. Not sure if it’s just corroded onto the pipe, glued or something else. But I was able to get the screw out of it.

I would just pry it off, I wouldn't worry about the plumbing. Sounds like it's just stuck.

Locking pliers with a slide hammer mod would rip that cartridge out easy.

Maybe, they are really tight though, you need substantial force, hence the special tool. However, it's the bond from the current tool that helps the most, even more than the pulling force. A pliers will slide off, metal on metal, which is the main issue.

New cartridge is an exact match but will not go it more than about 2 mm's.

My MODEN cartridge only been installed 2 years ago when I renovated my bathroom and it already drips water :(. I will be replacing it soon. MODEN ought to be ashamed of its cartridge poor quality. Thanks for your video.
