Moff Gideon does indeed look like he's trying to take Din off-guard. He's no jedi nor accomplished duelist. I'd say he's more of an information/strategist. This is why he needed stormtroopers and darktroopers to protect his backside. Loved the video!

I love your duel breakdowns. I agree, Din seemed to dispatch him rather easily once he gained enough space to grab his beskar staff. I was hoping for the duel to be longer than it was as it felt like this duel was being built up to all season only for it to last less than a minute, but I also feel like this means Gideon has something else up his sleeve. I'm really hoping we get to see Din use the darksaber often in combat next season, perhaps even against another lightsaber user.

Something I love about the duel is how it shows how the Mandalorians were able to stand up against the Jedi Order. Armor and weapons that can deflect lightsabers, gadgets to overwhelm, offset and create distance against Force powers, and being much more tactical and offensive than the Jedi.

If Moff Gideon never got the darksaber through combat, does that mean Bo Katan's reign was still valid and Din defeating the Moff wouldn't earn him the throne?
@ATATChat4 жыл бұрын
Great question. So, my long winded answer: I think Bo Katan wasnt accepted by the other fractured clans of Mandalore and with the purge on the horizon, I think it was stolen/taken by the empire and then Gideon took it for himself. Now that there is a story of a Child of the Watch defeating someone in true combat vs it being handed over by Sabine, it gives a more authentic ownership over the Darksaber itself. With that said, I think this show is exploring the very question you are asking and eventually Din/Katan will go on to reforge Mandalore with a brand new ideology that doesn't omit the way of the warrior etc.

You don’t want to tire yourself out before we do anything now would you. (Sighs and folds his hands on the top of his abdomen and twiddles his fingers on there then turns around and rubs Grogu on the chin with a finger.) Forgive me little guy. I don’t mean to talk down on you or anything I’m just a little nervous that’s all. Grogu: (Babbling curiously) Ben: I’m a little nervous learning again. I’m a little nervous if like you know a part of me feels a bit out of practice. Ahsoka: (Walks in) Not doubting yourself already are you Benjamin? (Has her arms folded across.) Ben: No Master. I don’t have doubts. Honestly, it’s been a while since I’ve done this and uh… I want to trust myself to do this right and not…. not have to worry about failing. Ahsoka: Ok. I’m glad that you’re open and straight forward about your feelings. However, you must be careful if you are too afraid of failure or making mistakes you could run the risk of losing the confidence that you need to survive even the basics of what you need to apply. Is that understood? Ben: Yes, Master Tano. Ahsoka: (Pats him on the shoulder) We don’t need light sabers for what we’ll be doing today. Go sit on the blue mat over at the corner and wait. Ben: Yes, Master Tano. (Gets off the sofa and sits on the mat.) Ahsoka: (At Grogu) You’re gonna watch me work with Master Solo. Can I trust you to give your ball a break for a little while? Grogu: (Nodding) Ahsoka: Excellent. (Walks over to Ben who is on the blue mat. Finds him slouching a bit. She folds her arms and clears her throat.) Ben: (Sits up straight) Master Tano. Ahsoka: All you have to do is follow whatever I say. Listen, rely on your ears when you hear my voice. That’s the most important, fundamental thing you do to get through any lesson and strive. Ben: Yes Master. Ahsoka: Grogu could you grab that controller and turn on the screen. Grogu: (Chitters and turns on the flatscreen and there’s some nature background and music.) Ahsoka: Are you familiar with meditation? Ben: In name. Ahsoka: Do you practice it often? Ben: (Shrugs) Probably not enough. Ahsoka: You know how to breathe in and out? Whenever you get angry, frustrated, anxious, scared or feel like you’re about to lose control and do something to respond to all those emotions and then you realize later on that it probably wasn’t the best decision, but you didn’t realize it at the time. When that happens, when you feel compelled to latch on to those strong emotions whenever there’s something happening that makes you want to act out or respond to the situation as a way to make a decision have you ever found yourself thinking that before you make your next move do you attempt to stop yourself and breathe deeply instead as a way to diffuse the overwhelming intensity already building up within yourself? Are you interested in learning to choose this method and make it a habit as opposed to always reacting strongly and caving into those intense emotions the same way you used to when there is a problem or if you need to protect yourself? Do you want to make that commitment in mastering the power of deep breathing, being present and learn to abandon old habits that didn’t make these problems easier for you to handle? Ben: Yes Master. Ahsoka: Before we go forward, I want you to make a promise to me. Ben: All right. Ahsoka: I want you to promise me that you are going to do everything in your power to release any doubt you have in yourself. I don’t mind you being nervous because this is new to you but do not start talking down on yourself. If you do, we will stop this, and we won’t do this again until you get rid of that part of yourself. Do you understand young man? Ben: Yes Master.

Picks him up and carries him over to where Ben is on the mat, she places Grogu on a separate pillow so he can watch what they are doing. She walks over to Ben who’s is sitting up straight and steps to his side behind him then sits down beside him.) I’m going to give you some background about this practice. Share with you the benefits of meditation and why it is essential. Ben: In training as a Jedi? Ahsoka: Improving yourself as an individual and emphasizing the importance of self-care. The world and the galaxy are filled with things happening and things going on that are often very complicated and we tend to react to them very strongly. We as human beings we all have a battle going on inside of us a battle to survive, get through the day or we are put in situations we don’t ask to be in, and it puts us through a lot of stress and sometimes trauma. A lot of times we come across situations in which we decide to act or react to a certain way whatever it is. A lot of times our actions upon our decisions are often rooted in extremes. They can be a combination of intense rage or having our minds and feelings be out of control. We often give in to that because it’s easy. Ben: (Nodding and sighs obviously this is having him look back on how he used to be while being conflicted with the dark side and as supreme leader.) Ahsoka: Now what does this have to do with meditation? And what is it? To put this in simple terms it’s nothing more than a technique in which we are connecting to ourselves with our bodies. It’s a way to alternate or lessen the chances of reacting strongly or doing things that can be extreme when there are strong feelings that are present in these moments of stress or needing to defend yourself. So, what’s being used? Is there a weapon? No. The body is your weapon. The only thing that you have to do is this… (Breathing in quietly) That’s right, we use the breath. Breathing in deeply, slowly, gently and quietly gives us the opportunity to feel calm and collective. It helps us be mindful, be present. It slows down your heart rate. It reduces the stress that it might have had before and bring down your blood pressure. It’s not a magic power though. It doesn’t get rid of all of your problems in an instant. But it does help make you feel calm or at least help lessen the chances of doing something that can be harmful to yourself. Does any of this make sense? Ben: I understand the concept of meditation but doing it often not so much. Anger and rage were what I gotten so used to doing as a way to defend myself and have control or have a way of getting what I want. Did it help me? No. It certainly didn’t make me feel as strong as I thought it would just so I can be taken seriously and have people listen to me. Ahsoka: You’re very hard on yourself. Ben: I am. Didn’t help that I was raised, or I felt like I was living up to high standards and some expectations of what I’m supposed to be for someone else and have things said to me that I didn’t want to think as true but somehow it was, therefore I lived up to the image, the image of being a monster and being too powerful. With that I guess practicing meditation wasn’t a priority for me at the time. It wasn’t something I took the time to do maybe I could have controlled so much of my anger and the way I worry about not meeting standards or expectations. It set my anxiety with all my rage into overdrive. Even got to a point where I would have break downs or even panic attacks and PTSD. Something I never talk about loosely with others. Ahsoka: Explains why you felt nervous when you were waiting with Grogu when you were telling him to settle down because there was a part of you that maybe you found yourself looking back on some of those unpleasant memories that created this anxiety you still have. This is going back to some of those experiences of training when you were a teenager or a young adult. I can see why you’re a little fearful starting all over again. Your feelings are valid. Ben: I don’t want to bring that fear if you’re trying to help me. Ahsoka: It’s normal to be afraid when you’re trying something new and relearning something all over again. As long as you don’t allow it to be powerful enough to make you so hesitant that you can’t try, and that same anger and rage continues to grow, and it gets harder to overcome. That same fear you came in with earlier on and you still have right now at this moment use that as motivation to focus not on being afraid to make a mistake but to pay attention to what I say to you and that slowly and surely it won’t have to have as much power over you as it once did. We have to say our truth which is the hardest thing, but it is a step in the right direction to slowly be free from our fears. (Puts a hand on his shoulder) Thank you for sharing with me Ben. Ben: Thank you for hearing me out. Ahsoka: Are you ready? Ben: Mmm-Hmm.

I think that Bo-Katan may have lost the dark saber in combat as she’s interested in defeating Moff Gideon and that opportunity was lost when Din did. I think that we need to know how the saber ended up in Gideon’s hands to really get who has a claim on it. However, if not the training to win it, Moff Gideon had the means and I do believe he let Din disarm him because he won more politically speaking by that act than defending the saber because he wasn’t a match for a trained Mandalorian as Din is. I guess there were other factors when Gideon claimed the saber that possibly are a source of embarrassment for Bo as her leadership was heavily questioned by her people.

It would be fitting if he stole the saber, because it would mean that theDarksaber was "jinxed" because it was not previously taken in combat, but handed, so it was not honored, kinda like the Excalibur from arthurian legend, that would only work on the hands of the true king of England (and only if the king was honorful, since Arthur shattered the blade while trying to kill Lancelot in jealously)

Gideon relies less on brute strength and focusses more on his cunning, he had control of the situation and had almost every contingency accounted for but when Luke showed up he knew he was buggered. He seems aware of his own physical limitations and adapts to them with the resources he has, he darksabre is a symbol of power so owning it gives him that power. How he got it is frankly irrelevant because as far as the Imps are concerned he's now a big boss. He does not need to rely on it's tradition but knowing what that tradition is gives him sway over the mandos who seek it, hence why he chose to fight Din knowing even if he lost he'd be spared thus allowing him to create friction and delay things long enough for the dark troopers to finish the job. As far as villains go with plans and skill he makes up for his physical limitations with cunning, viable fail safes and pragmatism and really he only lost because of deus ex machina (albeit one which was set up prior so it was a stroke of writing genius opposed to an ass pull). It's because of this I am so glad he isn't dead, there is so much more story potential from this guy for future series and I cannot wait to see more.

When I was watching the episode I've immediately recognised Djem So moves as well. Or, rather, pathetic and clumsy attempts to use it. Because this is what Gideon eventually seems to be, a Vader wannabe, or a middle ground between Tarkin and Vader, even the fighting style of choice is the one Anakin used. And Djem So feels like what the Imperial Military utilizes as well: the sheer might, overwhelming force and brutality. It also feels to me that Gideon chose literally the worst fighting style possible for him, because, well, he's not young and energetic, and cannot use the force to compensate for it. TLDR: don't use the weapon you're not proficient with.
