If you watch children & young animals interact, they have an instinctive empathy towards one another. A child's first reaction to being presented with a puppy or kitten is to cuddle it & look after it. I've even seen footage of a leopard kill a monkey for food, realize that it was carrying an infant monkey, leave the food & carry the young monkey up a tree to look after it & mother it. Even the most ferocious animals have the capacity to love & empathize instinctively. So these are children & animals who have zero concept of religious indoctrination & still have an instinctive capacity to love & protect life. Humans & animals found & demonstrated their moral capacity long before the first religions were conceived.

shredx81 Thanks for the reply. In Islam we believe in the fitra an innate disposition towards God and knowing what good is. This 'moral compass' if you like can become clouded by ones environment. We also believe animals recognise God. The way in which they live their lives can be in accordance with what God has ordered. I think we can agree that there is a hierarchy in this world between us and animals. Animals by default do not have the same cognitive abilities as humans, animals live solely by their base instincts. You mentioned an exception not the rule. Pretty much all enlightenment philosophers said we cannot obtain objective morality. Objective morality delves into the realm of metaphysics which itself is thrown out by naturalism (everything can be reduced to physical processes). On a deeper level if we are just matter born from irrational circumstances then morality is irrelevant.

@shredx81 If you want to take animal behavior as a moral compass or say that what is innate in us then there is a huge problem. Firstly let me clear this. Allah gave Humans both desire and free will, but animals have desires but no free will. So even if they sometime show mercy their desire or animality if you may say will force them to do it. So lets turn to the problem of animal behavior point. If humans are animals in an atheistic world view then most common prevailing faults of human nature cannot be ascribed as immoral. Take for 'Rape'. It is in animal kingdom and it has been in human kind from so long. Now how can you reconcile this common behavior to being morally wrong. If the world just came by itself and we just happened to create ourself through evolution than Human kind cannot ask for objective morality. Just read frederick nitze, he is the father of organised atheism who thought this through and he said without god there is no objectve morality. Means now you can rape a girl and just claim it was just a reproductive behavior common to pretty much all mammals.

I think he went down that road for academic prestige, fame and money. As we still don't fully understand the mind, we cannot say there is no neurobiological way to define ethics. The way to define for example, why child abuse is wrong, is to examine the evidence and to use reason and discussion to come to a conclusion. We can show the psychological and physical damage caused have negative long term effects on the victim as well as the parents and relatives. From this we can deduce that to abuse a child is "wrong". We can use preferential behaviour to discuss with each other if we would like this behaviour to happen to us or our own children. We can then agree that we consider this to be wrong/unethical/immoral.

Basically the verb cut( katana in Arabic)used in the verse doesn't mean literally cut off . That's because when you look at all other verses when Allah used the same verb it doesn't mean cut off. Plus when he wants to mean cut off literally he used similar verb but with emphasis on the second letter katâaa or as well mentioning the tool of cutting. If this book from Allah really it has to be exact and accurate no event a single letter extra . So cut here means you stop their hands from stealing and that can be by prison for example.

I had a discussion/debate with a man who’s basic premise was (as an example) the Manchester Terrorist bombing which killed women and children was “justified in Islam”. Obviously, my argument was the complete opposite. This debate lasted a very long time but basically his argument can be summarised as, we ARE at a time of war, all British people pay taxes knowing that their money is used to kill innocent Muslims so they are not only complicit, they are adversaries. The British people know that “we are at war” with Islam. We do not overthrow our government, we do not refuse to finance them so we are “enemy combatants”. By using this logic (I’m being very brief here) he rejected all of my evidence....the first things most will think of stating. I know that I’ve posted this event before but I didn’t receive any help at the time. I know in my heart that he is wrong but he said (referring to the skeptics dismissal) “that’s feels over reals”. There must be evidence I can point him too. Please help. He’s not going to do anything violent. I’m not even convinced that he wasn’t playing devils advocate but I’ve read others quoting his logic.

Youre wrong about the HUKM of the hijab in the Quran. Mere mentioning does not entail obligation. The beard is mentioned in sura taha but that does not imply that the Quran obliges the beard. God also commands Musa to strike with his staff - that doesnot mean carrying a staff was obligatory for Musa. Your analogy with gloves and socks does not hold. Because there is not one way to wear a khimar. The khimar can also be worn around the neck and shoulders and be draped across the jayb. So you need a qareena to establish that God demanded the wearing of the khimar on the head because the hukm of using it to cover the bossom can be achieved with it being simply draped from the shoulders. That it was customary to wear the khimar on the head does not imply that God enforces that custom. The verse can easily be used to say that all God requires is that the breasts be covered and any item of clothing is sufficient for that - in fact most scholars accept the covering of the jayb by other than the khimar as fulfilling the hukm.
