as someone not playing DnD nor seen the show, what is the difference here?
@mouse57796 жыл бұрын
YTIsTakingOverMyLife so essentially you know how in most RPG games there’s mana bars and a tonne of different spells that can be cast and all you’ve gotta do is wait for your mana to regen? Well in DnD, it’s a little bit different. I’ll be speaking in terms of 5th edition DnD which may differ from 4th, 3.5, 3rd, etc, so if something is wrong to what others know that’s why. Obviously as with all kinds of RPGs there are different classes and schools of spells from evocation spells, think fireballs and all that fun explodey stuff, to healing spells and various different kinds of resurrection spells, to spells that let you charm other people. I’m getting off topic here haha. Back to it, in DnD it varies from the normal standards of RPGs by having what’s known as spell slots. You have a limited number of spell slots determined by your spell caster class and your characters level. Essentially, you can cast a first level spell in a first level spell slot for its base amount of damage, or cast that same spell in a higher spell slot to deal even more damage or have more effects. For instance a spell like fireball, which is a 3rd level spell, requires a 3rd level spell slot to be cast, but it cast in a 4th level spell slot you gain more damage dice, and do more damage. A spell like Hold Person however, when cast in a higher slot allows you to paralyse more people with one casting, essentially helping the party neutralise them. Now here’s where things differ a bit more in the way that these slots regen. In a normal RPG you just wait a few minutes and you’ve got full mana and can cast spells again. In DnD however, once you use a slot it’s gone until you take a short or long rest depending on your class, so you need to be tactical and careful about burning spell slots in case you get into a massive jam. This is mostly prevalent at lower levels as you have hardly any spell slots compared to higher levelled ones where classes like Wizards hold a lot do spell slots, and can do things that can literally alter reality itself. As you can tell I got a little bit carried away there but I hope this cleared things up even a little bit.

Honestly I thought that the breaks between the darker parts was perfectly needed. The other parts were trying to add onto goblin slayers development and honestly it only feels right while the side characters were not the most interesting I believe that was the point. After watching the first few episodes I was scared that the series was going to just be killing goblins in different ways but I was glad it didn’t become that. After watching how the season ended it shows that it can only push goblins so far till they become boring although the last episode was not boring in the slightest.

I think it's one of those creative projects where the idea sounds good when described in a few sentences but falls apart when ironing out the details for presentation in a longer form. I think it would have been better as an 2-3 part OVA instead. It could have hit all the marks of defying the tropes of a generic anime hero, the shock value, the psychological terror the goblins inflict on their victims, and Goblin Slayer learning to cope with his lust for vengeance in a few concentrated well paced OVA episodes.

I think I gotta disagree. Personally, I liked this as it is, instead of a dreary drag you through the mud and back kinda show. The characters were really enjoyable for me with their interactions with psychopath goblin slayer and each other. Though I do have to agree that the CGI was really distracting in the first half and brought down the show a bit. Also the bit about the middle lagging behind I kinda disagree with as at sometimes it felt a bit too tame but the sewer romp was fun with the sudden turn for the worst and epic moment that came afterword. Overall if I had to use your rating system I would give it a 77.

Probably the biggest homage to dnd and tolkien we will get in anime. I really appreciate the message that seemingly small unappreciated deeds are what keep the world together, and also enjoyed the (for lack of a better word) "classic" feel that reminded me of Spice and Wolf at times. I'm gonna have to disagree on the middle parts being too slow and other party members being too boring. If there wasnt any kind of break between the action, and every single episode was nothing but "goblins get killed in a new way", I think the show would have been worse. You even admit that the breaks are there to grow the characters, and it does exactly that. The other party members aren't super interesting, but I almost feel like you arent supposed to look at them as just their individual character. When they were all together, the party felt like it had great chemistry and they balanced each other out. Also, seeing the other party members grow alongside Goblin Slayer is fun, like when they first join up and make fun of him for only going after goblins, but then they realize why and they don't joke about it anymore. It is also very interesting to have a show where the hero isn't saving the world, but saving the town from the evil that the big shots thinks is beneath them.
@ronin16485 жыл бұрын
The tone of the first episode is missing from the rest. And this series has some of the worst and most generic secondary characters ever. Goblin Slayer runs dual purposes, yes there's the main draw with our boy running around murdering goblins, but then you have the fact that he can't do that forever, at some point he'll get too old or too injured to fight goblins and what will he have after that? And that's the point of the other characters and the lighter tone part of the series takes, it's a bunch of people who care for this PTSD riddled man and want him to be able to move on when the time comes.

Year One would've definitely been a better route to go. It's definitely the better manga in my opinion. True, it's only backstory, but it's a good fucking one. It shows how GS became the person he is, and how was molded into the goblin slaying badass we all love. It would have been a better choice for the story to follow Goblin Slayer as he wanders and completes quests alone, using each character such as Priestess, Elf Archer, and Dwarf Mage as characters for a single episode. The only reoccurring character necessary for Goblin Slayers progression is Guild Girl. But that's just my two cents.
@FrenxGames6 жыл бұрын
indeed i never fucking tought a manga spinoff could be this fucking good. Year one by itself is better than 90% of the shit out there just for the quality of the panels, even compared to some main series. The "NPCs" being as generic as possible is part of the deliberate parody of traditional fantasy anime, exemplified by the fact that none of them have names. The childhood friend/romance chick on the farm is literally credited as "cow girl". Then you have "guild girl", "lizard priest" etc.. You can still legitimately argue that this doesn't make the anime better just because it's all done ironically - but don't make the mistake of thinking the boring, generic nature of side-characters is anything but deliberate. The only good goblin...
