I thought that the dumbed down English really helped show the contrast between the poor people in the game and the VIPs who barely act like humans anymore. They feel almost artificial compared to the very humanized characters that we’ve met, which shows that the VIPs and the upper class have lost their humanity and relatability. I think it’s worth noting that the director fought for over a decade to be able to get the funds/support to even make the show. So considering he never expected to be able to make a second season, that might explain why the secrets of the plot/game were spoon fed out in the last episodes, especially the story of player 001 which essentially let everything out. Still though, for someone who says they only intended on being able to make 1 season, he sure didn’t close all storylines, we never got to know much more about the history of the frontman and the undercover cop. Which was the storyline I was most interested in 🤷🏼♂️ Edit: and yea why the F would he have player 456 NOT GET ON THE FLIGHT if he wasn’t originally gonna be able to make another season? 😂

When it comes to the VIPs, I think it's less that they're bad actors but more that their lines were specifically written to be stiff and simple because it's a show primarily targeted at a non-English-speaking audience. You'll see the same thing in anime or games. Most recent anecdote I can come up with is Sam in Metro Exodus. In one scene, if you have English voices on he says "Hell yeah!" but if you have Russian voices on he instead says "Oh, yes!"
@ecru_58193 жыл бұрын
Same It really felt like their lines were intentionally simple for that reason. Yea they sounded cheesy but it was within reason The usual sleazy/rich bad guy characters being one of the reasons and it being for a Korean audience as a second reason
@kalebmiller35283 жыл бұрын
@@homiee590 I agree. I think that their lines were intentially simple and immature. For me it demonstrated just how out of touch and lacking in any kind of empathy they were. They were so removed from the dispair and pain that the contestants were going through, that they could make jokes about 69. This and the way that Front Man compares the games to horse racing definitely shows the point that they are completely detached from humanity. Especially when you constrast it with the horse racing scene with Gi-Hun at the start.

Gotta give the show more props on how well it developed characters. I was deeply invested in the life’s and struggles of the main character but even more so at all the side characters. Mostly the ones on 456s team, the cop, and the frontman. I don’t typically cry I’m just not a crying type, but during and after the marble game with 001 I had tears flowing and it was weird that a show managed to make me feel so strongly about a very small character. Of course they kinda made me eat those tears with the reveal in the end but still. The way they wrote characters and had all these different lives and storylines mixing together to lead them to be in that horrible place, it got me invested into these people who under any other circumstances I would not care about. Brilliant writing

Shows that string the important questions on for 5 seasons bug the hell out of me, tell me the answers in a realistic time frame, and then make more interesting content playing with the implications that come with big revelations. I don't think it's "spoon feeding" to be told what's going on after the cop guy spent most of the season figuring it out basically, it was a rewarding payoff that didn't feel rushed, or delayed, imo. This drama was always planned to have a second season. The ending was crying for it. Other things like the bomb that the VIPs can detonate in case things go south is a Chekov's gun that never got mentioned again. Also, what were the pink hazmat suit soldiers doing and how did they get stuck into the situation they got in? We know that when the recruiter ask you to choose a color (red or blue), it affects your role in the game as a player or hazmat soldier. What the hell was the police detective and the search for his brother all about? What about the fact he literally exposed the organization to the police via Kakaotalk? Too many loose plot holes. It's far too messy if it ends now, although I doubt a second season can redeem the messy writing, but it might at least give us another fun and mindless season of death games

*SPOILER ALERT* One fun theory about the whole show is that all of the main characters deaths were foreshadowed in some way in the series: Deok-su (the thug) jumped off a bridge, and was eliminated from the game when he died in the glass bridge segment. Ali (the thief) took money from his boss, and was eliminated from the game after his marbles were stolen from him. Sae-byeok (the defector) held a knife to someone’s throat, and was eliminated from the game by being stabbed in the throat by Sang-woo. Sang-woo (the businessman) tried to kill himself, and was eliminated from the game when he killed himself after Gi-hun refused to. Gi-hun (the winner) was never eliminated, but at one point swore on his mother’s life, and when he returned home, found his mother had died in his absence.

Can you really call Ali a thief though if his pay was withheld from him for 6 years?

It ruined the impact of the good parts for me, so I hated how shitty actors they were.

You still need to act well if you are twisted, not that goofy-ass C movie-level acting they had.

I’d like to believe this is how most super rich country clubs have their patrons behave on a typical Friday evening.

It’s just not realistic. Rich people live different, yes, but they aren’t cartoonish villains.

This show actually fucked me up, I haven’t had a show actually affect me emotionally in years 2:03 I will say that Ali is basically the one character that is actually a good person. He’s basically an indentured servant in Korea working to send money to his poor family and that’s the only reason he’s in a debt like that 3:45 I also think it’s possible that the VIP’s seem goofy and badly acted because it’s a translated version of how Korea sees a typical corrupt American businessman. I bet if a Korean saw how American movies represent a “Korean gangster” they would think it’s a pretty ridiculous and cheesy representation of Koreans

@@AliceSoung yeah, not to mention korea is a homogeneous society. mainland korean familiarity with the social culture in america is just caricatures they see on media, it’s mostly just cringey english phrases at worst. the things i’ve seen for koreans (and other east asians) in american media is a whole other story… not even accidental either

@Mangolite3 жыл бұрын
I agreed and disagreed with a particular point regarding how the show reveals some of its mysteries. I love Cube, the first one, but the following sequels are no better. Overall, Cube series are all in the same line of horror where all the victims don’t know how they get to be put in the position and then get grotesquely killed off. Cube started the trope where Saw and Final Destination continued. Squid Game, on the other hand, revealed that both puppeteer and players are in a locked system, and both must do their parts. Granted, the VIPs sucked, but how the show’s message is about humanity versus the previous films above, it’s just about survival except for Saw.
@jasoncarvalho5883 жыл бұрын
The puppeteers are the VIPs they arent stuck in the system.
@singami4653 жыл бұрын
The issue is that the explanation sucks ass. Dozens of movies and anime since Battle Royale have done the "death game" theme and the explanation that "It's rich people's entertainment" is the most generic one you can come up with.
