Personally, I'm all for bringing back Minecraft Forums and Planet Minecraft as places for the Minecraft community. They are both very well established, and really only need people to come back and use them. Although Reddit’s been a thorn on my side just from what I’ve heard, I’ve realized how many precious memories were also there too. Reddit reading videos, Minecraft community, Kingdom Hearts community, etc. they were all there. The problem with Reddit outside management blunders tends to involve subreddits that are higher in traffic, which size will naturally attract the worst kind of drama, insularity, and mod abuse. But smaller niche subreddits rarely have issues unless they skirt the rules or totally lack moderators (to which point Reddit straight up bans). Unfortunately with its size the Minecraft subreddit constantly tethers on having problems associated with larger subreddits, as shown with the tree memorial incident. Until the past few years Reddit had been among the last of the big name platforms to offer this much user freedom, where censorship is still limited and people could freely throw profanities around and fling mud at each other over controversial subjects, and power users can access the site with QoL apps. I dread to imagine a Reddit which disenfranchisement and content standards resemble that of hellscapes like KZbin or Twitch. And Spez is absolutely hell bent on that goal.

i think you hit it on the head; community. places like reddit are made by the community/communities. sure, it's owned by a company, but the day-to-day of reddit is done by the members for the members, including moderation. and with the api changes causing pretty much all third party apps to be unable to afford existing, they effectively lock out users who pretty much only use one of those apps, because the reddit app sucks and reddit in browser isn't great on mobile either, and restrict access for many more, who now have to bother with the worse mobile options or only use reddit from a computer. this is gonna hurt user numbers massively. the protests and blackouts mainly just call attention to the problem and in some cases drive advertisers away, but the real harm is gonna come from users not being able to use reddit in the way the liked to use it. traffic is gonna drop, massively, and smaller communities are gonna fall silent forever, while larger ones are gonna become less active. and reddit needs very active communities to live, because reddit is communities.

This is a really good lesson for all social media corporations out there that I feel like none of them have learned. The only reason they exist is because their users don’t have anywhere else they like better. Companies like to get cocky and make changes that worsen the user experience, but up until now most have kept it small enough so as to not make the entire service unusable. I don't have a reddit account; I never have. But reddit was one of the places I could reliably find someone else already having asked a tech support question I needed an answer to. Reddit was the site I was looking for when I googled a full question, hoping someone else had already asked it (and the vast majority of the time, they had) and it hurts quite a bit to see the way the site is shooting itself in the foot because this sort of information is just going to get more scarce. The internet used to be a place where you could find information. Now it's so littered with seo misinformation, propaganda, and advertisements that it's near unuseable. This move, especially along with the way twitter has shat the bed, is just.....going to make things so much worse.

KZbin has BEEN separating people. For a long time now. There used to be no censorship at all in the comments, and I’d have some of the best debates/discussions with people I’ve ever had in my life. I would spend hours typing up a multi-paragraph response to someone who would then do the same back to me. There were people I’d argue with for weeks. I’d be thinking about what I was gonna say to someone while I was working, and I’d get home and spend literally all of my free time just typing up ONE response. I fleshed out my opinions about almost everything so thoroughly during that time. Sure, it got heated sometimes. But I always left with a deeper understanding of the opposition’s views. Nowadays I just get fed the same echo chamber crap videos and don’t even bother debating in the comments anymore due to shadowbans or just outright deletion of comments. I mean come on, you have to say “UNAL1VE” nowadays ffs. And nobody seems to be really bothered about it? Certain topics can’t even be discussed at all anymore. Its disgusting, honestly.

@@Бобёр-ю8г many moderators used third party apps to moderate because of the moderation tools they offered are completely lacking in Reddit's official app. also, disabled users like the blind used third apps to navigate the site. while Reddit said they would provide an exception to accessibility apps after backlash, r/blind stated they do not trust Reddit to do a good job after a discussion with Reddit admins. this says nothing about the privacy issues and data usage that limit the official app's functionality. a lot of third party apps were, honestly, how apps and Internet experience should be - focused on improving the user experience. the official app is downgrade from top to bottom.

I just hope that them directing everyone's attention from reddit to the official feedback site means that they'll do a better job moderating the place and taking note of the genuinely amazing suggestions some people have put on there over the years. Currently, it's just overloaded with useless spam and rule breakers (somehow in spite of apparently every single post and comment being held for what seems to be manual approval, given the process can take weeks or even months), and the vanishingly few posts that actually do end up being tagged as being looked into by the devs usually don't get any further notice for years or even ever.
