The surging popularity of classic cars says more about the current state of new cars than anything else. Listen to Julian's story about his E34 Touring, which went from having a 3.0L V8 automatic to a 4.4L V8 with VANOS and a 6-speed.
The Build:
1994 530i
-M62TUB44 swap ~160k miles on motor. New timing chains, guides, vanos rebuild, all new gaskets, enlarged valley cooling passages, etc.
-Two tuned ECUs, DUDMD 4inch intake ECU (with 4 inch intake, MAF, airbox) for aggressive driving, and Kastle stock MAF tuned ECU for more linear domesticated driving
-Walbro 255 fuel pump & upgraded fuel lines
-420G, 6 speed swapped. New rear main seal, pilot bearing, throwout bearing, brass pivot pin, selector seal
-Brand new driveshaft from Driveshaft Specialists
-E32 large case 3.15 LSD
-Moosehead lower control arm bushings
-Moosehead rear strut mounts
-E31 lower control arms, OEM uppers, poly subframe bushings, new steering components excluding steering box, Koni yellows w/Vogtland springs
- Full OEM M-Tech bumper kit and OEM trim
- Freshly refinished Hartge 17x8.5 ET13 wheels with 245/45/17 squared with brand new Michelin Sport AS/3+
-New headliner in grey suede
-Reconditioned M5/540i Light Silvergrey heated/power sport seats
-Racing Dynamics steering wheel
-Brand new windshield glass with new OEM trim

I am the original owner of a 1990 525i. It’s the Icelandic green with gray interior picked out by my late wife. It’s in excellent condition as I have spared no expense to keep it that way. I bought it Germany when I was stationed there: amazing what that 2.5l motor could do on the autobahn. Great memories and still a pleasure to drive.

Wow man sweet car! I’ve got the same rig only in bronzeit-beige with a natur interior. I’m in the process of restoring her and I must say your correct about the m20b25 that came in these, I only wish I could take mine on the autobahn as those engines are tuned for some serious fuel.

@@detroitdiesel7074 On the autobahn the car would never get below 17 mpg averaging over 100 mph. Departing Berchtesgaden on a Sunday morning, wife driving, she averaged 100 mph for 500 miles with one gas stop. The car tops out at 135 mph, but the speedometer will indicate 150.

That’s awesome, I get a solid 26 mpg @75-76mph on the highway in fifth gear and just about 25mpg @ a steady 80mph. Absolutely love the car, 17mpg @ over 100mph is crazy good though!

Got two E34s, keeping them stock and replacing most parts with new oem when I got them. I really like the factory feel of these cars when sorted. Much respect to this guy building a car how he wants it modified and keeping it good looking. 👍🏻

That's a perfect E34 touring and and so are your videos, they take long but are absolutely worth it because of the great quality. The only change I'll do to that E34 would be an OEM head unit or a period correct one (like a blaupunkt SQR).

I think I saw this on BAT sometime last year. SO good, this E34 is ultra klasse good. That road isn't far from me but have not been in a while. Super bumpy overall and supposedly piece of it collapse during the last few rain.

Beautiful video about a truly beautiful wagon I miss my e34 I had an affair with a E39 and it stole my heart from the 34 so I let the 34 go live with someone else I still miss her tho when I look at photos of her I kind of wish I had her back and yeah her kind are expensive now but realy worth it I love the 39 but a big part of my heart is still with the 34

I love the E34 and was a saloon fan when younger. Now, the wagon is just perfection. What’s incredible about this build is it completely OEM but for the wheels. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it’s standard M Sport kit and it still looks AMAZING! I’m clearly getting old because if is considered a classic and it’s stunning. I don’t rate new BMW’s anyway. Love E39 and E38 too…. the rest…. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I spontaneously bought my E34, originally wanting a E36, but boy am I glad to own a E34. I see E30s, E36s, and especially E46s. I’ve only seen two other E34s on the road and I have no clue where they are now. But that just goes to show how rare the E34 is compared to others. I’ve literally seen more clown shoe Z3s than E34s. I don’t know if it’s like that anywhere else but in southern California, there are only a handful of E34 owners.

I’m in England and can confirm you very rarely see E34s here either. Feel so lucky to have been able to buy one now that the prices haven’t risen a ridiculous amount yet.

Here in europe there aren't much left, especially the tourings are very rare. I live in the netherlands and i own a e34 touring from 95 in the color petrol mica metallic black. It's a 518i m43 with 352.000 km original engine and manual gearbox.

BMW imported only 6658 tourings to the U.S., and who knows how many are left? Maybe a thousand, tops?

Damn, this build is absolutely beautiful. Hartge wheels are gorgeous. I got stock 93 530i touring, and I love it. It constantly needs a lot of work tho. But stock v8 with a 5hp18 is an ideal miles beater.

It's true and sad all car manufacturers care is #s 0 - 60, horsepower, torque, top speed and I the pursuit of higher numbers they forgot what driving is all about and that's the drivers experience, I own a E39 with 230,000 miles and I love it.

About Your recommendation of building E34-s due to rising prices etc- I just got my build streetlegal after 7 years of building, basically from scratch. I had bougt separatedly body, interior, engine, wiring, diff etc and put it all together. My present car is 3rd E34, first was 525i 24V, second 530i V8 and my present is 540i. And I have to say that I just love E34!

Do you have a write up of this swap. I own a 530i/5 e34 and have access to a low milage m62b44. I've looked at the frankenmotor m60b44, but find 540i parts is impossible where I am at. I need details on sensor conversions if I stay obd1.

You're right, i saw it to. I'm from the netherlands and own a touring from 95 in the color petrol Mica metallic black with the larger kidneys, in a light color like this bmw i would prefer the smaller kidneys, with my color i like it more with the big kidneys 😍

Wonderful looking and sounding wagon 😈🔥 I have a swapped m62/5spd e34 and I love it but it smokes . Im making a m60b44 only to realized a big gouge in cylinder 8. I also have a rusty e39 540i brand new timing done with rebuilt vanos units and I wanna make it useful before parting the body . How much different/harder is it to swap a TU in the e34 ?!?!

Thanks! It was the exhaust set up. Smaller sized piping, race cats, then x-pipe to a magnaflow muffler.

Unfortunately it's not possible (unless getting super technical) because the m62tu uses drive by wire instead of a throttle cable. So I opted to just do without it. The pedal takes very little effort, so you don't even notice the lack of cruise control. It's definitly possible to retain with an m60b40 however.

I have had an E32 735 for 20 years. I also had problems with the cruise control once. Reason: malfunction in the instrument cluster. Cause: wrong bulbs. My solution was: Replace, got one for cheap 50 CHF.

Some e34's Have increased in Value10 fold here in the UK. ( for the RIGHT Cars. ) over the last few Years. Nice Clean Original cars are very hard to find i the UK in Right hand Drive. I was Buying Good running Immaculate cars 14 years ago for £600. £720. £780. UK Pounds . ( Less than $1,000 for Great cars ) With all the EV Joker & Clown cars, I see the UK RHD cars doing £15,000 to £20,000 Very soon here in the UK. Overtaking the Values of the e30. USA LHD values may be Different.
