The deported 104 Indian migrants from the United States who arrived in India on Wednesday were "handcuffed & shackled" during their 40- hour journey in a C-17 military aircraft.
While the opposition staged protests outside parliament & mocked the much touted friendship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi & President Trump, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar clarified that the deportation process was not a new one and said that "the standard operating procedure for deportations by aircraft used by ICE that is effective from 2012, provides for the use of restraints".
This comes at the heels of PM Modi's visit to Washington DC to meet President Trump.

I’m baffled by anyone who claims they aren’t criminals. They violated Indian law, American law, and international laws by entering a country illegally/unlawfully. Hence the name illegal immigrants. Yet some still insist on calling them “not criminals.” What exactly is yalls definition of a criminal? If someone enters your home without permission, do you welcome them with open arms, or do you call the police? Let’s not compare India to Colombia or Mexico. Are Indians suffering under drug cartels and rampant organized crime? Doesn’t India provide enough opportunities for people to build a decent life? Can you imagine being on a plane with 100+ people who refused deportation, and they suddenly turned on you in midair; I’ll take my chances containing them with shackles, handcuffs etc. 🙏Unrestrained prisoners during transport is lunacy. Nothing good comes of lackadaisical security. Sorry, but the risk of losing control of unwilling passengers puts the air crew and escorting marshals in a very dangerous position. Puts all lives at risk. 🍀The air crew is totally outnumbered so they shackle them for their own protection. It's not like this is a Delta flight, these people are not happy about being sent back to where they came from. No permanent damage/injuries at all, just the safety of the air crew is paramount. Some or all of these deportees may become violent mid-flight. 🍀Criminal acts have consequences! If you break the law entering the country illegally, then you commit crimes while in country, you are a dangerous criminal. These people are going back to their home country rather than going to jail, hence being deported. 🍀If India doesn't want their citizens deported in chains, then they should provide the transportation. Only then will they understand what it takes to provide security mid-air, if any of the deportees become violent. 🍀But then, India does not want to do this because of the cost factor., and the political ripple effect locally there.

It is understandable that legally proven illegal migrants are deported back to their own country of domicile. But , what is the need of such inhuman & barbaric treatment perpetrated on the deportees ? Hope at least the women & children are exempted from this ordeal. The receiving country is known to be fully cooperative & adjustable. Then what is the need for such acts ? It all reminds us of the earlier slave ships of those times carrying innumerable slaves to this same very country , where they were similarly chained and had to relieve themselves at their own places.
