Sixty-year-old Vinod Kumar was declared dead at TMH Hospital in Kottakadavu in Kerala’s Kozhikode district less than an hour after he was taken there with chest pain and breathlessness in the early hours of September 23. To his family’s horror, they later discovered that the Resident Medical Officer (RMO), Abu Abraham Luke, at this private hospital, who is responsible for patient monitoring and emergency response, is not a qualified doctor and is an MBBS student who hasn’t passed exams for more than a decade.
The family initially believed that the death was due to a heart attack until Vinod’s elder son, Dr Ashwin Pachatt Vinod, a practising doctor and an alumnus of AIIMS, Delhi, checked the hospital's death summary.
Barkha Dutt speaks to Dr Ashwin Pachatt Vinod, who shares his harrowing experience.

This is why we need more hospitals like AIIMS , which are run by the government . Many private hospitals and clinics have no licence . Privatization of health care is bad for india . The government should spend more money on health care and education . This is necessary, not mandir or majid or church or trip to visit holy places and no freebies during election . Wake up people , demand free health care , BlackRock has come and they will make healthcare like the USA . You will be forced to inject more and more pharmaceutical poison .Worked in the USA . Demand for free health care and education people .

In USA you have to wait for a long time to start treatment. Recently one inhaler costing 400 dollars was reduced to 30 $ after government intervention. Because a doctor's father suffered, everyone is taking. In Kerala, government medical colleges have done heart transplant surgery successfully .

@@aleyammarenjiv7978 I have worked in the same USA hospital . I do know how it works . There are strict regulations on drugs . The health system is run by insurance companies , pharma companies and bureaucrats. What I am trying to say is that we don't need this system in India . Already the unpadh modi allowed BlackRock to own hospital chains . They have acquired more than 70% stake in KIMS and other hospitals . This is disastrous . Now modi wants the private sector to handle the government hospital . This is suicide . Desh unpadh aur bekar insan ke hath mei deya Gaya hai . Tomorrow the blackrock will start to acquire pharma companies , then what will you do if they start to sell drugs at 1000-3000rs .

The recent tragic events, including the murder of a young boy in Hathras and another life lost due to medical negligence, highlight an alarming disregard for the law. In both cases, those responsible not only seem unafraid of legal consequences but also play with human lives without any guilt. These incidents raise serious concerns about how well the law is enforced and whether there are adequate systems in place to hold people accountable.

Very sad Dr. May you recover quickly from this grievance. Must be very hard for Burkha Dutt to handle this interview..so emotional that at one point she couldn't control her emotion. Testing times both for the Journo and the Dr. facing the camera. Watching this news clip was heart wrenching.

Mam, it's heart wrenching and shocking to hear this. I really feel angered at private hospitals where people go to trusting the best care will be given. Yes it's criminal that half baked doctors are hired to save money and risk lives of so many loved ones. It got me thinking if my parents really died this way...without our even thinking of such practices. Mam all such hospitals should be closed and their chiefs imprisoned as hard core cold blooded criminals. Mam please fight....God bless you for bring bare truths out.

"Now, the general public will think that everything is fine in big hospitals. In the wards, it is physician assistants without even an MBBS qualification who are examining patients. They are hired for much lower salaries than junior doctors. In 99% of places, this happens with the full knowledge of the hospital management."

There is a Heaven-and-Earth difference between CULPABLE HOMICIDES (first degree murder) and medico-legal Manslaughter (absence of mens rea and actus rea) Please ask Honourable CJI Chandrachud and he will tell you the difference in case you are IGNORANT about it
