Hello Cork, thank you for the kind comment. If you have any questions out side of this video of others I am happy to answer or source the answer for you from my contacts. Happy modeling from Australia.

Just what I was looking for. The whole subject is hopelessly confusing for a newbie. I've managed to organise in my head the basics but you have done the hardwork for me. Nice work!

As a person returning to scale modeling and airbrushing after close to a 40 year absence and quite a change occurring in many of the products used today versus decades ago this video pretty much sums up what I have been researching the last few months. I for one am planning on pretty much using the paint companies products that I will be using for thinning or reducing the paint for spraying on my projects as the slightly higher cost of materials known to be compatible with the paint products I will be applying in many cases will be a very small additional cost to the project. As far as cleaning the airbrush between colors or at the end of the day will be where I basically use generic products to save a bit of cost but even then the final flush for a days session will be done using a proven brand of quality airbrush cleaner. Again the cleaners at the end of the day are still cheaper in the grand scheme of things than the cost of many parts to repair or replace a nice quality airbrush. Nice video with a lot of helpful information for newer users.

Hello Bill, another factor I would encourage is trying out a budget airbrush and tuning or upgrade it to suit over a quality name brand airbrush. Example I use a chinese hseng with a 0.5mm nozzle for most jobs such as base coating, priming, top coat and can clean easily with the wider nozzle. For finer gradient, shading, fine line work swap to your name brand airbrush with a 0.2 or 0.3mm nozzle. Your nicer airbrush will not wear out as quickly or at all. I have videos on these topics as well if that helps.

Great break down. Can I use Vallejo flow improver with Tamiya or Mr Color?
@mokanaman
@mokanaman Жыл бұрын
Oh no, I just learnt that flow improver is arylic retardant which is made of water and Propylene Glycol. Adding these mixed to solvent paint has very very poor results, attempted to decode lacquer retardant at the moment. This research will be published in a video once finished and tested in future,

@@mokanaman Ok thanks! Like I use both and at times I need to switch between the two and I always get my airbrush clogged at one point or the other.

This was extremely useful, thankyou very much. So in your opinion, SCA general purpose thinner would have similar properties to Mr Hobby Levelling Thinner? Would you consider doing some similar experiments and recommendations on the Repco line of thinners?
@mokanaman
@mokanaman Жыл бұрын
No, SCA premium acrylic is little more milder then mr leveling but works great on clear coats and gloss, general purpose is like mr. hobby normal blue label. Did the tests but feel video isnt really needed as its for Australia only. However I have some intel and tests on making leveling thinner from base chemicals and will do a test on that in future. Thank you for the kind comment working on plastic cement video now and now to make your own.

@@mokanamanlooking forward to your plastic cement video. I’m sure you have done your research, your videos are always very thorough. As my contribution, Tamiya extra thin cement is 50% butyl acetate and 50% Acetone. Which is almost same ingredients as Tamiya Airbrush Cleaner which comes in as 51% Acetone and 49% Butyl Acetate. That’s why internet uses these interchangeably. I found Butyl acetate can be ordered from Sydney solvents .. I plan to order it so I can make my own airbrush cleaner, sprue goo and cement. Ethyl Acetate is also a very good ingredient to have as a acetone free ingredient in any of your thinner brews. While ordering may as well grab some MEK

@@Sophie_519 I found some MSDS's and SDS's this information is general but pretty much correct. All these products are solvents and butyl acetate, Ethyl Acetate, MEK are crazy similar with different flash points and evaporation rates, heat ect. This video will cover MEK and leveling thinner will do butyl acetate. Very lucky to have a chemical and material engineer over look my work. Before ordering anything standard lacquer thinner also works as extra thin and very mild spru goo (10-20%) as cement.

Hi mate, it is good to know there is a channel talking about hobby stuffs in Australia. I saw most of the store not selling the gaia notes thinner anymore as I still have the gaia notes paint left. I would like to ask do you know which thinner will be suitable for mixing for gaia notes paint. Any advices would be appreciated.

Hello, thank you for your kind comment and glad my content is of use to you. I also cover Australiam automotive paints and thinners for the hobby but am a huge Gaia Notes. Sadly they are no longer being supplied via local hobby shop. Super Cheap auto lacquer thinner is a fantastic cheap alternative which I use but anything from Mr. Hobby to leveling thinner will also work. Here are some supporting videos to help you out. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqvJi6mwa5KSeMk

I never understood why the Mr. hobby leveling is considered a slow thinner every time I use it the paint is touch dry in 30 seconds compared to hours for enamel. Also when hand painting lacquers I use Tamiya/Mr.Hobby lacquer retarder 1:1 with Mr.Hobby paint the finish is comparable to airbrushing but usually a bit more glossy and a little 40ml jar goes a long way since im mixing single drops at a time.
