Testing different airbrush paint thinner ratio or thinning hobby lacquer paint for airbrush application. This video we will explore the best method of measuring out paint and thinner. Finding out the paints viscosity and mixing thinner for the best and perfect mix to apply on plastic and paper. Finally debunking the myth of consistency of milk.
Tests include measuring and weighing paint, spraying lines with 0.2mm 0.3mm and 0.5mm gravity feed double action airbrushes both cheap, hseng and named brands like Iwata. Spraying plastic spoons and some tests on parts from injected molded plastic scale models kits and gunpla/ gundam model.

This is the best guide I have seen for paint thinning. Thanks Sir! Will use it this weekend on my Pieta statue and my gunpla :) God bless you Sir!

Fantastic video!!! I had wondered about the relationship between thinning ratios, paint performance, and nozzle size. I was using the 1:1 ratio for Mr Color but I have now switched to a 2:3 paint/thinner ration. Works great. The information in this video should appear in modeling magazines so that it reaches a wider audience. A zillion thanks!

Thank you for your kind comment, funny enough I am on very bad terms with editors of the major model magazines. I do not think any of my experiments or reviews will leave my channel. If your keen on sticking around I have few videos doing the same tests on other paints, playing with cheap airbrushes and swaping needles and nozzles for different results. Current project on the bench is testing different airbrush nozzle cap shapes which is a lot of fun. Happy modeling mate and thank you for viewing.

I've been thinning Testors enamel paints 1:1 with paint thinner for over 50 years. I put on light coats & use a hair dryer to tachy the paint. Then another coat. Now this is done on model trains, so uneven paint is prototypical. This works also for weathering rolling stock since different shades of the same color adds to the look of repair work. Also the thin layers don't hide molded in details. With lacquers I used 2:1 ratio. I'll have to try a 1:1 ratio. Very informative video, nice job.

Hello John, thank you for the kind comment. I do warn thinning ratio is different from brand to type and this only covers lacquer. I did acrylic one for gunze in it own over all video and one day will test and push enamels as I loved to use them around late 90's and early 2000's as a kid. I grew up learning about modeling from gentlemen such as your self and enjoyed testing new innovations over the years but still relying on old fashion methods of modeling. Happy modeling mate.

Love the great helpful demonstration mate , id like to see more coverage on doing fluro colours onto a very large model , maybe even through a .8 nozzle .

For that you want show car paint and a channel is specialize in auto motive spraying. They do sell really bright fluros and personally would do it on a base coat of sliver for best coverage. Again with thinning ratio and atomization is different. Otherwise thank you for the kind comment and visiting my channel.

Thanks for those tips , yes , silver worked a treat for the fluro green , I tried m.r colour thinned 1/1 blasted at 50 psi through .8 nozzle , covered the large body in one coat totally even and unblemished , many paints like m.r pearls and chromes are very sensitive to number of coats , I can see a thicker coat shot through a larger nozzles is very good for chromes , metallics and fluros .@@mokanaman

Really well done review and test. My experience is, as you mentioned, a lot of factors effect results but one of the biggest in paint manufacturer, same test with Tamiya for example would yield much different results. I use Mr Color as it seems to have more pigment in the paint. Cheers ⚓

This is an excellent in-depth and informative experiment, I agree with the milk consistency generalization which is not accurate at all as well as the spoon test as there are many variables. I am going to experiment with your ratios, thank you Allan.

I like a 1 part paint to 1.5 part thinner Or more recently 1 part paint, 0.2 part retarder and 1.3 part thinner Except with white paint I always go 1 to 1 with white paint.

with white use silver as an under coat. its amazing.

@@mokanaman silver, interesting might try it Also my problem is not coverage instead ive always found white mr color paint to be thinner than is other counterparts so if I thin white more than 1:1 It tends to slide of flat areas and pool in raised or lowered area

this is were testing the pigment density and coating side of the shot glass to see how thick the product is helpful in deciding how to thin. However I rarely or never spray pure white and normally stick to off white or very light grey. Sprays much nicer then just white and no one will tell the difference.

Ah this is the cool part, I reuse the plastic by flexing them and dried paint falling out in flakes. pretty easy plus I need it to be clear to see how well paint sticks to the sides.

I can assure you the Tamiya lacquers will work and thin the same. Been playing with Tamiya acrylics atm to do this video fairly shortly. Enamels will be at a much latter date as I may not have any stock of it.

I bought it from Super Cheap Auto in Australia. Its a purpose built thinner bottle which should be easily found.
