Clearly the best scene from this episode....Maisie and Charles are awesome. Obviously I don't own any of this...Game of Thrones is just my Sunday pleasure.

@@bouttoenddismanswholecaree5078 No. Imho Tywin realized from the first moment on that something is up with her. He got curious, and thats why he started having long conversations with her - something he wouldn't do with a normal servant. For a long time I even thought he secretly knew who she really is for the whole time, and just wanted to make up for the horrible things that happened to her.

@@covodex516 He didn't know that she was Arya Stark. If he did, he would have her captured and the Lannisters would be using her as a bargaining chip. He did, however, know that there was something different about her. When Tywin first arrives in Harrenhal in S02E04, all of the prisoners kneel upon Tywin's arrival apart from Arya, as lords or their families would not kneel for another lord. This gave away Arya's highborn status. Arya pretending to be a boy to travel safer gave away the fact that she was smarter than most people her age. As did Arya knowing how to read.

She poses as a commoner but eats with a knife and fork and decent table manners, says she eats a lot, knows details of history even he doesn’t remember, and uses polished and formal language. I think Tywin struggles to be a father to his own kids because they don't match his expectations. Arya on the other hand is a pleasant surprise, a highborn girl posing as a commoner makes him interested to learn more, and her intelligence and sheer nerve made him respect her. It's respect for someone that allows him to be kind, or at least something resembling kind. I figure Tywin found sparring with Arya's wit more entertaining than anything else he could do when he got down time at Harrenhall, hence why he seemed to spend a significant amount of time with her even when she wasn't performing her duties as a cupbearer.

Tywin is fond of Arya, but he doesn’t suffer sentimentality. Some think he’s being kind by allowing Arya to eat, but in a scene before, the commander died from poisoning, so Tywin is using her to see if his food has been poisoned as well. It’s such a wonderful, subtle moment that shows that Tywin has the capacity for kindness, but his practicality and self-preservation are still his major priorities.

“You’re too smart for your own good.” It sounds like a straightforward line to conclude the conversation but there are layers to it. Tywin is a man who appreciates wisdom, as stated later on when he gives a lecture on its importance to a great king. At the same time, he is also very experienced. Wisdom grants the ability to derive more detailed and impactful lessons from experience. A combination of these traits during wartime can take a heavy toll on whomever possesses them. It’s perhaps not the best thing for a child to have… especially one who seems to be as inquisitive and impulsive as this girl whom he’s growing fond of.

It's neither. Cersei hated being female. She wanted to have Jaime's life. Part of the reason she is so bitter is because she was forced into being what women were forced to be. I'm sure a similar exchange happened between her and Tywin many times when she was young. We shouldn't hate Cersei so much. She serves as a reverse mirror to many characters. This is just one example. Arya got to live the life she wanted, Cersei didn't. There are many other instances that formed her to be the mean, resentful, hateful woman she is as an adults. She went through most of the same things the protagonists of this show suffered through but with a key difference. Cersei never had 'good' parents to guide her, only Tywin's ruthlessness was really taught. Not honor or kindness like the stark children. The stark children recieved many gifts to make them likable. She did not.

Tywin has a fondness and admiration for Arya to the point where he won’t bust her for obviously having an agenda. Tywin is not fooled for a moment, even after her clever cover of why she speaks proper (properly!) He knows she’s high born and undercover for some reason, but doesn’t feel threatened and so enjoys his time with her, with no intention of outing her.
@cardsfanboy
@cardsfanboy 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think he thinks she's undercover, he figured out she was posing as a boy for safety reasons earlier, he's making the same assumption again, that she is posing as a commoner, because if it became known that she's "high born" someone might think of using her for a ransom. He respects her thinking, he doesn't think she has a nefarious reason for hiding who she is, just that situations have happened, and that she is doing what she needs to do to survive. The good thing about this scene is that it really establishes that there are noble houses beyond the major ones, something that you see with Robb Starks eventual wife and Brienne. (and played upon much later in the series)

After seeing tywin interaction with arya, i can't help but think that part of Tywin's bitterness towards his children was caused by the lack of "worthy" grandchildren. The most interesting thing is.. Lord Tywin knows there is more to her. He knows she's lying, and he knows she is not who she says she is. And yet he sees something in her that he likes. Something more natural than what Cersei wanted to be, something more clever, as well as something more sinister. He knew she likely had more nefarious plans than what she was posing as. He instead tested how well she played the game, and liked how she played it. Considering the darkness inside of Arya, she was likely the closest to the things Tywin wanted in his off-spring, almost like the daughter he *wished* Cersei had been. Scenes like this between the two of them really do capture that feeling, he knows she's lying from the get go, and calls her out/teaches her about her mistakes, which would serve her later. I'm guessing he feels, whomever she is, she will go on to do other things when she's done pretending there, but was not a threat to him, so he actually enjoyed the company of a child he likely very much wished his own children had started out being. These scenes are masterful in their execution of it. That was actually a *proud* smile from Tywin at the end. He probably didn't have very many when it came to his own, but he did for Arya, and that says a lot about why he liked conversing with her so, even when he knew she was not who she said she was. That smile he gives at the end it's almost as if he'd wished his other children had been *what* she already is back when he was raising them. Both Jaimie and Cersei's weaknesses(Ambition for Jaime and Wit for Cersei) are Arya's strengths and he saw that in her. In many ways, Arya is the child he wished for, but never got.

What I found most interesting is the fact that they both found some sort of safety in each other's company. Arya is telling the stories of the Targaryans with a child like wonder. You don't see much of that at all after Ned is killed. But she felt safe to be a child with Tywin. She knew he wouldn't hurt her from the second he saved her from one of his guards. And though Tywin knew she wasn't who she said she was, he was enough steps ahead of her to not worry about it too much. He really liked her, and gave her a side of him he gave no one else in the show. It was like it was the only place for both of them to drop their defenses and just be human again for a bit.

You can tell he’s got her game figured out, but he’s fond of her enough to be amused when she quickly thinks up a way to get herself out of the pinch. Tywin respects a resourceful person who’s quick of feet and mind. It’s a shame his flaw is caring about the Lannister’s name and legacy so much, otherwise he’d have been an amazing statesman, military commander AND father (he already is the first three). Also, Charles Dance’s interpretation is absolutely stellar.

Notice how at the beginning, Tywin is drawing out the conversation while Arya eats. At first he's only trying to discretely test the treachery of the cooks at Harrenhall, but as his curiosity piques, he sits down and starts to wonder about this girl, so much so that he ends up giving her subtle warnings on how to pull off a more convincing act. Tywin was forged by fire and learned to do unspeakable things for family and legacy, but he was a far cry from being an evil man.

This was one of my favorite scenes from the show, and one of the reasons why, even though he is definitely one of the villains of the series, Tywin is also one of my favorite characters. You see him try to teach his children this as well, but Tywin is never needlessly cruel or arrogant or domineering. Cersie throws her power around just for the sake of reminding everyone how strong she is. Tyrion is brilliant, but his defense mechanisms also make him overconfident and obnoxious to people sometimes. Tywin understands that even your enemies deserve at least enough respect to take them seriously. I always loved this scene because it shows that he is insightful and perceptive. He knows there's something different about Arya, but it's clear he's not interested in finding out what it is. As long as she behaves, he's content to let her keep up her little ruse. And you can see his appreciation for her game after she leaves the room.

I cant help but imagine that these 2 would have had an incredible arc together. Arya could have learned so much from Tywin about strategy and war. I really wish they had found a way to make this duo have a bigger story.

Gods be good, this scene is amazing. It's incredible the chemistry that Dance and Williams are able to conjure despite their vast age / experience difference. Tywin seems genuinely fascinated by Arya. It's wonderful.

Honestly I feel like this is one of the best scenes in the series. It shows a different side to Tywin and gives you sympathy towards his life and his goals. It showed how names determine your allies and enemies, not ones person.

I like how engaged Tywin is here. It’s like they both let their guard down when Arya starts talking about Visenya, and Tywin is just enjoying listening to her talk about something she’s passionate about. Immediately accepts that Arya relates more with warriors. He even remembers that she told him her father was a stone mason.

Arya: raised by the most honorable man in the kingdoms, mentored by the most powerful man in the kingdoms, escorted by the most dangerous fugitive in the kingdoms, trained by the most lethal assassin in the kingdoms and defeated the most feared & formidable villain in the kingdoms. She makes being called a “little girl” a compliment.

I wish Arya and Tywin had a Thanos and Gamora type of relationship, like if Tywin saw potential in her, and had her trained to be his own personal assassin/spy.

Class rank is difficult to hide. Tywin picked up on it right away. One of the reasons Trump carries the giant bolder on his shoulder. He's too dumb to realize class doesn't matter, yet smart enough to know it does in the ways he wishes he had it. I only wish they had carried on with this storyline a bit further. Both actors were exceptional.

Tywin is the essence of what a good lord, and man by extension, should ve. Strong and fearful when necessary, but respected, honest in what he says and means to do, and empathetic when it is properly called for. Those who end up meeting him know right off that this is someone who isn't to be trifled with casually, but also someone who if presented with diligence will be met with friendship/assistance.

I cannot imagine how daunting it would be to have a scene with the legendary Charles Dance, but my god Maisie just absolutely nails this scene. Incredible acting all around. These interactions between Tywin and Arya are my favorite in the entire series
