He knew right away Tyrion was playing him because no way he would come up with such a dumb plan. The only reason LF kept his mouth shut was because it was a good plan this was before he had the idea to wed ugly duckling himself. I have a feeling Tyrion already knew who the traitor was that is why he gave the real plan to Pycelle because he knew it was going to leak.

In the books he tells him he's going to make Tommen a ward of (either the Arryns or the Martells--I can't remember.) The show changed it to betrothing Myrcella to Theon because it'd be _less confusing,_ not because it was a better plan.

I like how this scene perfectly highlights how different these 3 extremely intelligent men react: Pycelle, being the faking actor actor that he is, doesnt break his "dumb old guy" persona for a second, and just accepts the dumb idea without any arguing, because hes going to tell Cersei anyway. Varys, being the master strategist and tactical genius that he is, immediatly figures out that its bullshit, and doesnt even think for a moment that Tyrion is actually serious. Littlefinger, being the selfish manipulator that he is, takes it at face value and immediatly brainstorms what he and Tyrion could potentially gain from actually following it through.

The Bible is truth. Please read at least Genesis Mathew and one book you chose yourself. The important part is combining the reading with the inner work Jesus Christ taught. Forgiveness is the thing that makes it all click. To be forgiven we must forgive. The key is our parents. They’ve loved us to some degree, feeding raising clothing, etc. we all build up grievances there. Actually dealing with those issues, and genuinely forgiving from within is what makes it all click. Seriously,

He gives him the most preposterous story because deep down, he knows he can trust Varys. Even Cersei might laugh, but this also gives Varys the most room to spin spin spin. It's like a blank check. He gives Pycelle the juiciest lie because he kinda knows he'll rat, but wants this message above all to go to cersei (practice round). He gives littlefinger the most hair-brained scheme but baits the carrot, to see how much he'll jump... and boy does he. Not just finding the rat, but measuring everyone's character and capability. Tyrion already suspects Littlefingers can work miracles but now he *knows* he can, and that he has an incredible in at a certain region. Varys will spin, he might make a miracle out of nothing. And pycelle? Well he gave the big fat rat a big fat cheese to bring home so he'd do it *quickly*, so he can pay attention to what the other two string together. This was layered, it's great.

Tyrion's game of "who can I trust" was a clever thing. Until he revealed to all 3 (Pycelle, Varys, LF) that he was testing their loyalty all along. "The queen mustn't know!" The only way to play would have been to never let them know they were getting played. He already knew he could not trust Littlefinger, he needed no game to realize that. But Pycelle was a wild card. So once he knew Pycelle was telling the queen everything, the only thing to do was never reveal that. And keep feeding Pycelle false information while letting him believe he was trusted completely. Instead Tyrion creates a powerful enemy that comes back to bite him (at the trial for Joffrey's murder).

Ultimately he couldn’t do all 3, also he’s testing them differently. With Littlefinger he knows he can’t be trusted, the test is really about whether/what actions will motivate him. I know what you mean but that's not what "breaking character" means in the context of acting. That little smile of Tyrion is a characteristic of Tyrion, showing that the character even he finds it hard to stay serious, but it's not a character breaking by the actor Dinklage; it is consistent with the character of Tyrion.

I only just noticed this but when Tyrion is talking to littlefinger he starts off by saying, 'But remember, you must tell no one.' However when littlefinger ends the conversation he states that 'The QUEEN musn't know.' This implies 1 of 2 things. Either that littlefinger was clever enough to assume that tyrion was doing this behind Cersei's back or that littlefinger had already been eavesdropping on previous conversations. Just goes to show you how phenomenal the dialogue is.

You kidding? They completely botched it. There's no reason why Tyrion told Pycelle (which is why in the book he doesn't - instead he just gives him two sealed letters). And the whole part with Varys made no sense - wedding Myrcella to Theon was an obviously asinine idea, and again, no reason at all to tell Varys that. This was an early warning - Benniwize were willing to compromise internal logic and downright dumb down the story for the sake of slack-jawed "viewers in bars".

He told Varys the dumbest plan of all because he knew Varys would spot it in an instant and do nothing about it, and realize tyrions playing a game. Which was a test for Tyrion to see both how smart he was and "loyal" Varys could be to him. He told Baelish the lie that would benefit Baelish the most, to prove that not only does Baelish only serve himself, but that he could get Baelish to go with any of his schemes if he gave Baelish enough promises of rewards for going along with it, even if Baelish doubted Tyrions honesty or intentions.

Looking at the scene (and the comments by others) I feel this scene is kind of funny when we consider that Pycelle gets "found out" when its clear the deck is stacked against him. Littlefinger and Varys might have ratted out to Cercei if they had an incentive, but rightly Varys saw the proposal of Theon as preposterous, while littlefinger was incentivised (taking the proposal at face value) to see it through rather than report it. Pycelle is the only one with an incentive to rat. I know the point ofthe scene is to show that pycelle is the rat telling the queen stuff, but in practice its less a test for tyrion about who is the rat (he probably already suspected pycelle). Rather it s also a test of the intelligence and motivation of lttlefinger and Varys. I hadn't thought of it that way previously

It’s interesting to note which story Tyrion gives which person. The story he gives Varys is the most unbelievable, since Tyrion doesn’t really want him to be the spy. The story he gives Pycelle is the most believable (and in the end true) because it possible that Cersei might have fallen for the doddering old man act, so the story would have to be convincing or she might ignore him. The story he gives Littlrfinger could be true or not, so Tyrion has to throw in the promise of Lordship of the Riverlands to sweeten the deal, since he really wants Littlefinger to be the spy.
@johncampbell631
@johncampbell631 9 ай бұрын
I disagree about the Varys point. The fact that Varys is a spy is common knowledge. He's the Master of Whispers for goodness sake, nicknamed 'The Spider' because of the web of informants he remains at the center of. To say "Varys was the spy all along!" and act like it's a revelation is absurd. My point is this; the only thing better than a truthful person is an honest scoundrel. It puts people at a paradoxical ease because they understand the rules of the game when speaking to such a person. I'd sooner sit down for a beer with Varys than the High Sparrow - someone who's so devoted to the idea of goodness and religion that he's one of the most insidiously evil characters in Game of Thrones. Pure evil is cartoonish. Pure good is unsettling.

+xxlCortez Tyrion is the smarter one. *SPOILERS* Lord Baelish definitely knows how to play the game but what he lacks are trustworthy allies. For him every person - except Catelyn and maybe Sansa - is just a pawn on the board. He has no empathy. "He would burn the realm down if he could be king of the ashes" to put it in Varys' words. You also see that in the way he treats his spies. Just consider Ros' fate. He set up the whole war: He let Lysa kill her husband. He told Catelyn that it was Tyrions dagger which led to her arresting Tyrion which led to Tywin _going to war with the Starks_! He added fuel to the flames of the rivalry of Starks and Lannisters because "chaos is a ladder", i.e. purely for his own benefit. This lack of empathy lead to a lack of truly trustworthy allies. I expect this to be his downfall eventually. While technically he is Lord Protector of the Vale, Lord of Harrenhal and Lord Paramount of the Trident he has no actual power on any of these regions. To me, Tyrion seems to be the more intelligent person for this reason, basically.

+Zardo Dhieldor arguable. I love Tyrion, but Petyr plays the game better for the simple reason that he is out for himself, not the realm. He has no affections except for Sansa, so he doesnt have any weaknesses like Shae was for Tyrion. Also, Petyr is in no danger the way he plays, he makes sure everyone needs him (Lysa needs him, Cat needed him, Cersei needs him for financial support, Ned needed him to figure out the truth of the Lannister children, even Renly needed him to deliver messages. Petyr has literally played everyone in a way that none of them can have him dead, even though half of them are against the other half. Tyrion`s game is for the good of the realm, which is why he makes enemies. Its better for everyone else, but not for Tyrion needs trustworthy allies, especially because of the enemies he`s forged, thats why he has to pay Bronn, and plan schemes like this. Petyr doesnt need allies because hes cunning enough to work his way to the top on his own.

+page394Always Petyr may be playing the game better at the moment, but I think the fact that he doesn't take sides as you have stated will be his downfall. In no way do I see his end game working out for him based on the fact that he has no strong allies. In the game it is not only important to avoid making enemies, it is just as important to make allies. Sooner or later the cunning man must show the rest of the realm his hand. I don't think people will be too amused at the fact that Petyr has made them into dogs chancing their own tales.

I do honestly think Tyrion was expecting Littlefinger, rather than Pycelle, to be Cersei's rat on the small council. Because you're right, sending Myrcella to the Vale would've been so much better for House Lannister than sending her to Dorne. But when Pycelle was the unexpected rat, Tyrion felt forced to go along with the Dorne plan, to avoid revealing his whole hand to Cersei

The one flaw with Tyrions plan is that he has bribed Littlefinger too much. If Littlefinger had been a Cersei informer he would never have revealed the plan because it probably would have meant he lost Harrenhall and becoming Lord of the Riverlands. If Tyrion had made it a command of the Hand instead that would have made it more likely he run to Cersei.

A delightful chapter in the books that the show polished into an absolute gem. The transitions directly from one chat to the next here really bring style to the presentation, where the books like to keep things a bit more methodical, and buries the lead just a little by following most of Tyrion's day where he does this.

Tyrion: Tells three different lies to three different people. Pycelle: Buys it immediately and tells Cersei. Varys: Doesn't believe it for a second, but keeps quiet because he already knows what Tyrion is attempting. Littlefinger: Only buys it after Tyrion gives him enough incentive, but doesn't do anything with it because he wants to get it verified. So, from most intelligent to least is Varys>Tyrion>Littlefinger>Pycelle.

I feel like maybe his biggest mistake was removing the most incompetent members of the Small Council. Knowing which ones are traitors is good, it means you can exploit that. If someone doesn't give away their disloyalty, it doesn't necessarily mean they're loyal, it just means they're smarter than to give it away. By all means, keep Pycelle and Slynt; just keep a sharp dagger nearby. Exploit them until their usefulness is done, then cast them aside at the opportune moment, when others expect you to be weakest. Instead, he got rid of them early, and let everyone else know exactly where he stood. A foolish move for the Game.

You may have a point regarding Pycelle, but Slynt had already outlived any usefulness he might have had. Sending him to the Wall was not only better than he deserved, but the best move from a strategic standpoint, as well.

I think Tyrion was trying to send a message. He wanted to earn respect. Pycelle wasn't all that component, so it's not like he was all that useful to him. He was far more useful as a message to people who might try to cross him than as a traitor you can exploit in some unknown 4d chess move in the future. He saw an opportunity to establish himself as a cunning and ruthless, which gives him breathing room to solidify his power.

As smart as Pycelle, Varys and Petyr can be (specially the latter two ;), all three clearly fell for Tyrion's deception since: -Pycelle got caught and punished by Tyrion for being Cersei's spy. -Petyr was angry at Tyrion for "being made a fool". -Varys admitted to Tyrion that he had played his deception very well. PS: Very well played indeed, Lord Tyrion ;)

In 3 conversations he learns so much... 1) Who has whose loyalty 2) Who is a threat/player of the game 3) The interests of the rest of the Small Council 4) The Small Council's tells Pycel reveals himself to be loyal to Cersei and too much of a kiss ass to play a true long game despite being able to maintain his feeble old man act. Varys' tone and responses reveal he know Tyrion is full of shit, but smart enough to not call him out. Allowing him to keep his cards close to his chest. Petyr shows doubt and hesitation but is quick to give in when the offer favors him in a way that makes sense to him. Proving he is both ambitious and self-serving.

It’s one of the plays from Tyrion that reveal how he isn’t as smart as he thinks he is. Like what did he actually gain from the 1 2 3 play? He removed the most harmless member of the council and angered Littlefinger. He figured out that… Varys and Littlefinger are schemers, but he already knew that. It also of course reveals that Tyrion’s relationship with his family is his downfall. Cersei isn’t the most dangerous foe in KL. Her being focused was not worth the expense.
