There is another method of curing that my grandmother used in Argentina in the 40's. Fill up your gourd with Mate and then you fill it up with whiskey and you let it sit for a couple weeks, presto.

I hollowed a lovely fresh squash. How do I proceed to get what you have? Do I put it in the oven, or just let it dry in a dry place? Also, when do I carve the pattern. When fresh or when dried and hard? Thanks for the info. ;)

I just got 2 from a thrift store and drenced them just now with coconut oil which is antibacterial and antifungal. I hope I didn't ruin them but don't see why it wouldn't work.

What do you do, when you live in a very humid country like the Netherlands and do not have the privilege of seeing the son so often. How do you safely remove the hairy mold?
@josehenrique944 жыл бұрын
You can use a stainless steel gourd

I got a gourd and did not cure it. I used it twice and it's been sitting for about 3 days. I went to use it today and there is green fuzzy mold inside and black spots. You said in the video to sit it out in the sun and the sunlight and temperatures will kill the bacteria. Well, we currently have 3 feet of snow outside and it's about 36 degrees fahrenheit. Is that still the best way to kill the mold or is there something else I can do? TIA
@Circleofdrink8 жыл бұрын
+Krissy Taylor Rinse it with freshly boiled water, then set it aside for several days in a well-aerated location for several days until it becomes bone dry.

+david maclean Here in NYC there is a South American store, there they have Mates for really cheap. Also try to find an Argentine/Brazilian store. Don't go into Mexican stores I have never seen mate anywhere in Mexican stores and Mexicans look at me weird when I ask for Mate, later I found out Mexicans don't drink or know much about Mate.... It's a South American thing exclusively.

I used my wood gourd for the first time without curing it and I washed the inside but forgot to dry it. I live in really humid air and right now Inside my gourd i see large circles of green color with little white powder. are the green circles mold? how can i use my gourd again im afraid of the green circles.
@Circleofdrink5 жыл бұрын
A_ Z Sounds quite normal. Just let it fully dry them start using it again. Overtime, it’ll smoothen and dry much faster between use.

My (new) gourd is leaking from the bottom. Do you know whether this will seal up over more curing/usage or if there is any product I can use as an effective natural sealant? Thanks
@Circleofdrink Жыл бұрын
Usually there is nothing to be done. You may attempt using food grade silicone, but it's best to get a new gourd.
@neotropos Жыл бұрын
@@Circleofdrink OK thanks. I may experiment with olive or coconut oil - which may harden in the tiny cracks and seal it. Wishful thinking perhaps!

what about white and light blue mold.My mate has a very dark bottom just a little bit where usually a little bit of water stay.
@Circleofdrink5 жыл бұрын
You should try to destroy any sort of mold by allowing the gourd to fully dry. Nevertheless, as I've experienced, most people continue to use the gourd until it naturally fully cures, at which point, all traces of mold are gone.

I bought one and it has been painted on the outside and is enamel is this ok ? I didn't actually want it for Yerba mata ( I haven't found one I like ) I wanted it for herbal teas . The lady at the shop said to soak it in water for 24 hours and then after this scrap out the inside then put int he sun . I did this but as soon as I poured the water out after 24 hours I saw signs of what looked like mould ? I put in the sun which faded the mould but the mould is still there ? The lady said I could return it - should I be concerned ?
@Circleofdrink8 жыл бұрын
+Lisa Bianca If it's a natural gourd, you should only use it if safe and natural materials were added to it. Curing isn't really necessary for calabashes. Mold will go away naturally after it's totally dried out. Then resume normal use. Find us: facebook.com/groups/circleofdrink/

Hello. I cured my gourd for 24 hours, used it once, a week or so later I picked it up and it has furry mold. Do I put it out in the sun right away? Or do I cure it with mate and hot water first?

Rinse it with boiled water, then let it totally dry out for a few days, then it should be fine.
