I started drinking Yerba Mate back in High school, the very first friend I met back in 9th grade invited me to play basketball after school and after our game, we walked back to his home, his mom and older sister were drinking mate and as we started talking before I knew what was going on I had the mate in my hand and drank it, went home and thought nothing of it, days later the same happen but we had homework and then I realized what was going on, I wasn't hyper or jumpy, I was focused on one thing and one thing only, I got my homework done in record time, I learned the subject and after that I went home and slept.

Just two days ago, I can honestly say Circle of Drink and this video has not misrepresented it's benefits or effects. I can now appreciate first hand his passion "bordering on fanatic" (LOL) for this wonderful life enhancing plant/drink. I had to chime in on your question...I've had almost an out of body experience while drinking the guayaki brand while at work one night....it was like everything slowed down for me and I had no stress about anything that happened.( I work at Denny's as a line cook) it was a weird but welcomed experience and my co worker was wondering why I was so focused. I can only imagine what would happen when I drink the "good" stuff. Guayaki is an introduction to yerba it seems.

What I don't understand is the obscurity of the herb here in the U.S. It tastes like plain ol' green tea. Why it isn't more popular is beyond me. we used to use a cappuccino machine to brew it, because we didn't have mate straws at the office, but since we love yerba mate so much we are now equipped, we brew it and consume it in every possible way and probably carry at least ten blends at any given time, with katuava, ginseng, mint, cedron, lemon, hibiscus flower, etc etc, i even created my own blends with maracuja, dehydrated cranberry, and tamarind, there's nothing like it, yup i am a freak about it.

you can actually have what we call 'mate cocido' in Argentina, you prepare it just like tea, you can even get the 'mate cocido bags', pour water, let it sit for a while, and drink it. Of course, it's not as good to socialize, and there's not such a traditional feel to it, but there are as many styles as communities drinking it, I'm argentinian, and I think the discussion about who invented it, or who drinks it more or less it's supid, Mate is for sharing

To those concerned about mate & cancer: Mate was found to contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are known carcinogens, by one research group. This is the guess of one man, but since the other things found to contain these compounds (cigarette smoke and grilled meat), I'm guessing the team that tested the mate used SMOKED mate. I would *guess* that the carcinogens came from the smoke, not the plant itself. Smoke must be enjoyed in moderation, so buy unsmoked varieties and brands, and you should be good if cancer is a worry for you. Note that mate has only been associated with the areas it would contact while still hot (mouth, throat, esophagus, and stomach). Just some food for thought. I would be unsurprised to find that coffee barons or lobbyists funded that study, but that's just the conspiracy theorist in me talking.

I totally agree. Thank you for your comment. I truly believe these "studies" on yerba mate "cancer" is just a bunch of misleading studies either made up, or from like you said, "smoked" mate. I don't give in to it. Anything natural with these benefits rarely causes cancer. These corporations have strong ties to unnatural money-making products. Yerba Mate is one of the natural cures that should not and will not be included in their propaganda. Thanks again for the message.

Mustakrakish I study medicine in Uruguay and actually the types of cancer which mate presumably increases the risk of having, being mostly throat and esophagus are actually related to the hot water that's put in the mate, not the yerba mate itself. It is known that drinking water above 80°C increases risk of those types of cancer, but this could also be drink with tea or coffee, that doesn't mean tea and coffee increases risk of having cancer, but the water temperature. One professor explain this to us as Uruguay is the country that consumed most yerba mate per capita so it was relevant for us to know the difference. The investigation is misleading indeed :)

Mate doesn't contain theanine. But I purchased a big bag of the GUAYAKI brand yesterday and I kid you not, it was considerably euphoric. I was honestly surprised and impressed by its effects. This plant can be used as an antidepressant. Thanks for sharing. I subscribed today.

I tried Yerba mate for the first time yesterday in the afternoon it amazing energy better than coffee or tea and the best of all is I went to bed as usual. If I feel sorry about something it will the past 20 years I spent drinking coffee trying to obtain the alertness and mental energy.

I'm from Uruguay and I wake up early every day to study for uni (like 5am early) and It's imposible for me to stay awake without drinking mate. I have run out of yerba a couple of times and drinking coffee is not the same at all, I have to drink too many cups in the morning because I feel sleepy otherwise, with mate I only worry about concentrating and achieving my study goals. I can't imagine studying without it just not possible hahaha

I drank guayaki mare years ago but for some reason stopped, don't even remember why. I've recently come back to it and am REALLY enjoying a mix of rosamonte especial and playadito. When I first started it was too bitter but now that it's been several weeks of daily consumption I've come to really enjoy the flavor! I feel like it gives an aftertaste in the mouth much like coffee does, and I even enjoy that!! The first time I noticed the "bakery" note of playadito I was so excited to be able to appreciate it as I didn't think I ever get past the bitterness enough to notice anything pleasant. And obviously the effects are amazing. I stay at a balanced level of energy all day and never crash. I feel more creative and happy. Will definitely continue to drink and enjoy mate!!

I'm new to Yerba Mate, and got my package in the mail today with tea, bombilla, gourd(?). Drank one round of it, it is really strong in taste since I'm not used to it, but one thing I noticed is that my focus and mind just got sharpened extremely much. So weird! Love your videos! I just started drinking Mate since yesterday. I stopped drinking coffee completely as I felt it was not right for my body and mind. I got in a big box of different mate blends and so curious to try them all. Mate is potent, of a magic kind and already the feel I get from it is so special and nothing like I ever experienced before. There's the energetic buzz but in a very gentle way and not the crashing like one experiences with coffee. What would you say is the most potent mate on the market? Mate Factor in America seemed to be the most potent I've tried. It ships to Ireland. I order Kraus from URUshop in the UK. Over 2 or 3 kg flat rate shipping is only €13 to Ireland. I've been drinking mate regularly 2~ years. Past months it was really everyday, I feel depended on it somehow. I don't care if it's healthy or not but I will try to live without any form of caffeine. I stopped for 9~ days and I'm back to yerba. After some thoughts I don't want to quit this. I'm going to do some 10~ days breaks sometimes but not quit at all. Man I love that you have a passion about yerba mate, but one thing I have to say is that from personal experience tea doesn't make you crash, and doesn't give you any jitters like coffee. I dont like tea bags though I've heard studies that tea bags have plastic in it so I switched to loose leaf.

I drink it everyday in the mornings (about a litter) I also drink Camomile tea at nights before going to bed, also for about a year. I have noticed that my teeth have become stained. Guayusa is a cousin of mate, in the same family. It has a nice light and sweet taste and shares some of the nutritional benefits, but it lacks the robustness of energy release provided by mate.

Just wanted to say that I love this video. more people need to know about this magical herb. I've been drinking mate for about 6 months now. I used to be a green tea fanatic, but ever since trying mate green tea has never been the same. Also, I don't want to make you look bad or anything and I know you probably just had a hiccup, but yerba mate does not contain theanine. Thats a tea thing only. Initially I was sad about this, but I don't think it needs it. Mate relaxes me more than tea anyway.

Rui Pires 99% of all mate is unsmoked. Traditionally smoked mate uses the barbacua technique of exposing the mate to smoke in a room for up to a few days. I personally prefer the taste of non-smoked but I appreciate “toasted” mate for certain blends or flavors I’m trying to achieve.

+Chris Tye I guess no 2 bodies react exactly the same. Habits are also a big part of that. I have no comedown from coffee if I drink just 1 cup of high quality stuff (Carte Noir Miliciano). My mate (guyapi) (yes with a P) has no stems and very little dust.

Unsmoked mate has the same PAH levels as green tea, however smoked varieties (which is the majority) contains relatively high level of these carcinogenic compounds (something like smoking). One great unsmoked brand is kraus.

As far as I know, there isn't a definitive distinction between unsmoked and smoked, apart from speaking directly to the grower or it clearly stating "non-smoked" or "smoked" on the labels Almost all make undergoes some flame contact for at least 30 seconds. I agree about your assertions about all the health effects except cancer. Although it may be associated with helping colon cancer (not sure,) mate is associated with an increased risk of bronchial and mouth cancers.

ColoradoFarmerJoe There has never been a study that proves mate to cause any cancer. Even the association is weak, stemming from studies where people drunk hot mate from freshly boiled water and already smoked and were already sick with other diseases. The risk is a thermal one, based upon the water temp more than any other factor. As with any hot drink: tea, coffee etc. Which is why it's best to consume mate in the 145-175 F range.

Alrighty then, so I've gone through 2 bags of the loose yerba and my opinion is that it's really nothing special. if it's proven to have more antioxidants than green tea then great but from what I've read that's actually not true it's about even with a strain or two of green tea even surpassing mate. tastes good to me, more of an alternative to tea than coffee I'd say, it reminded me of Japanese green tea without that latex quality gt has and more hay like in flavor. I drank a good amount to become thoroughly stimulated and what I found was the same dirty stimulation with jitters and a hard crash that comes with coffee. for a cleaner energy try green coffee extracts or Starbucks (i don't recommend any of their other products (see over roasted coffee from raped soil) have a friend who likes their mugs though) makes cold fruity single serve packets that contain green coffee, it feels much cleaner than roasted coffee for some reason but at the bottom of the glass you're still dealing with the same molecule - caffeine. if you want honest mucho vibrant energy that exceeds caffeine in many ways I would recommend a powdered greens supplement I use Sun Warrior Ormus Super Greens, and while not cheap and tastes like shit the benefits far outweigh, if you ever felt energy from food you might know what I'm talking about, that said I still enjoy 3rd wave coffee in my Chemex and a well pulled shot of espresso but I was never looking for an alternative when I found the greens supplements.
