Don't worry Molly - we all cried when we saw that prom dress in "Pretty in Pink". I saw it in the theater & actually yelled "Y'all made that gorgeous vintage prom dress into THAT?!!"

yeah, I was sitting in front of you. Actually, you talked all the way through the movie. Really annoying and self absorbed. Thought you were so damned witty, too. You weren't. Just loud. @@pamelaolson5614 Then somebody grossly underestimated teenagers, because they would do a way better job than that or if they couldn’t they would have to buy a nice already made. The designer that did her prom dress in Pretty In Pink did her character dirty. I remember really being into fashion as a young girl & loved her character because she was so relatable in the movie. When she came out in the prom dress for the big reveal, I was so disappointed. But Molly Ringwald is a phenomenal actress so it didn't matter.
@reikun869 ай бұрын
And the designer made some bangers in Streets of Fire and The Rocketeer. I’m not sure what happened here.
@tygerstripes37529 ай бұрын
I agree; that dress is also cruel to the character Molly played, because she's made it herself and aspires to be a designer. And then we get that hideous dress. Made me sad as a viewer.

I was disappointed in that dress, too. Her character would have made something better.
@dg51759 ай бұрын
I like the choker part. Maybe if they did without the puffy sleeves it would've looked better. But at the same time, I feel like it oddly kind of fits because she's an aspiring designer and doesn't have much money, so in a way it shows she worked with what she had. ❤

What's the word for those diamond cutouts that are supposed to give the waist that hourglass shape? I'm an idiot and maybe I'm wrong, I think the dress was boxy in that way?

@Yoyomu205 It happens a lot, actually, that a school district has good programs and test scores so wealthy people willingly send their kids there whether they have to or not. Sometimes, those same schools also have poorer neighborhoods within their boundaries. You see a real difference between the two groups within the student body. I suppose it is meant to be character building? 🤷

@Yoyomu205 That's a good example, actually. Tulsa in the 1960s wouldn't have been a very big city, really, and there wouldn't have been multiple school districts for the white kids, anyway. Native American and black kids might have had different situations going on, but that's a whole other bunch of societal issues.

I get what she’s saying about the Pretty in Pink dress. However, the story portrays her dad, who made very little money, purchasing the one dress for her; the other polka dot dress from her friend. Like most young girls/teens in the 80’s, Molly was THE “it” girl. We all wanted to be as feminine yet slightly edgy and fashion forward without looking like we were trying too hard as she was in our magazines and on our movie screens. Her hair! Her face was so fresh at the time. When everything was blonde blue eyes Barbie doll, she was this enigma we couldn’t take our eyes off of. And come on, the characters are ICONIC. My sister and I went to see her in concert a few years back. We sat centre stage about 3 rows back. It sounds so silly and it took me completely off guard, but I had this weird reality bending moment when she came out onto the stage. She was truly lovely and gracious and so down to earth. She will always have a special place in our hearts. And, totally unpopular opinion, but while the dress WAS odd and slightly disappointing when it was revealed, it, to my mind, made sense for her character and where she was at and it really has become yet another iconic look from that time. So, kinda a win, really.
