Hello. I'm from Germany so let me give you some thoughts from someone who's born here. First of all, first time I watched the video I was shocked and deeply moved. The song/ video takes a very deep look into our german souls and how a lot of us feel about our country. It's a love- hate- relationship. The video is loaded with tons of symbols, that as a German you catch onto. Let's start: in the intro you see Germania ( Personification of Germany) during roman/ germanian tribes time. The red Lazer represents the "red thread" of the story/ history. Astronauts from the future bringing Germania in a glass coffin (snow-white) so she can lead through the/her german history. You see a submarine on in the hangar. Next you observe the twenties(Weimar Republic).The prison scene representing the rough, violent times especially for the majority of the population struggling to survive. Money raining down/ the great depression. And Germany's first try as a democratic state. In between Germania is dressed in knight's armor awaking her knights/band with the Lazarus spear. Next Germania is pushed in a wheelchair by the band through the Berlin Holocaust Memorial with burning bodies. (Imagine the statue of liberty being shown like that. Sorry couldn't come up with an equivilliant image of Britania). Next vignette the office scene showing east Germany and west Germany reunited (1990). Then you're being taken back to mideveal times, monks/ church are feasting off of Germania. In most scenes you'll see some church man involved. No coincidence. The concentration camp scene in the background you see V2 rockets ignition. The inmates are wearing different types of stars on their chests and a sign on the gallows reads: no photos. Germania wears an eye-patch first on her left, than on her right eye. Than a quick shot of Germania dressed modern with lots of gold leading german shepherds., representing Germany's wealth. The 70's scene shows the RAF- extremists holding Germania/ Germany hostage. Next vignette is the witch burnings shifting to the book burning. If you have a close look, at minute 4:45 you see a church man holding up a cross hugging a Nazi, symbolising the churches over all position to the horrific events happening during 1933-1945. The birth scene. Taking place in Valhalla. Germania is giving birth to dogs respectively "Leonberger" a breed preferred by Kings and Queens. The Breed almost went extinct during WW1 and WW2. A cardinal/ Constitutional judge (dressed in red) dressed in red helping a new Germany being born. At minute 5:50 you see the riots against refugees homes in the 90's in Hoyerswerda. Molotovs are being thrown and a car is being pushed over with the help of a man dressed in Nazi uniform. Than the scenes/ time vignettes start shifting faster and faster, showing how many times, when circumstances becoming too extreme everything is falling apart and Germania ( dressed in knight's) armor is crying. The outro is the piano version of the song "Sonne" which completes how we feel thinking of our past: a sense of sadness. To sum it up. Germany has a long, wild, violent, unique history, because we as a state of today exist only since 1990. Yet the roots go back a very long time. "Young and yet so old" I hope that helped a little to understand the video and with that us Germans. We don't have a strong feeling of patriotism, but a strong sense of unity. With love from country of Poets and thinkers.❤

63yr old Aussie mum here who absolutely adores this band, thanks to my then teenage son playing them at home in the early 2000’s. The outro, which as has been mentioned is Sonne, a beautiful song written by them. So many excellent songs, I listen to them in the car and make the windows rattle. My son got to meet Til in Melbourne Australia about 8yrs ago and had his photo taken with him while he was doing a promo visit for his other project Lindemann, which I love too. My boy has only one tattoo and it is Rammstein’s logo on his upper arm. Amazing band!! Oh and a Ohne Dich is another favourite!! Haifisch and Ich Tu der Wir are brilliant!!

I love Rammstein, they're amazing. Du Hast is the song they're known for, which is a shame. I feel it is just simple, and overly repetitive. I still love it when I hear it, and crank it up, but to me, they have a huge list of songs that are better. I'm glad you're experiencing more Rammstein. Awesome reaction! List of songs better than Du Hast, no particular order Deutschland (obviously) Sonne (the piano song you heard at the end is the piano version of this) Links 2, 3, 4 Mein Hertz Brennt Mein Land Ohne Dich Rosenrot Mein Teil (not sure you're ready for this one, don't look up the lyrical translation, just walk around banging your head, yelling "DAS IST MEIN TEIL!!!!!'", then go look up the lyrics after) Radio Auslander Angst Zeit Dicke Titten Adieu Ich Tu Dir Weh Amerika Feuer Frei Engel

Lyrically, this song is about Rammstein's complex feelings about Germany and its history (Hence the video) Basically they struggle with balancing their desire to be patriotic with the horrors (particularly the recent ones) their country has been responsible for. Lines like "Will dich lieben und verdammen / I want to love you and condemn you" and "(Deutschland) meine Liebe kann ich dir nicht geben / (Germany) my love I cannot give you" are pretty much the core idea of the song. Which on a personal note, is a level of nuance I think a lot of Brits and Americans could benefit from applying to our own history.
@politicalscientist88808 ай бұрын
Spot on dude.
@brien65623 күн бұрын
I think a better translation is,.I want to love and damn you,. condemn really isn't hard enough for the emotional side of it and, verdammen is to damn. Think,. English is a Germanic language.
@dmwalker248 ай бұрын
Jumped right in the deep end with this one. I'm not a German speaker, but I've poured over the lyrics, and the translation so much for this song, so I could sing along accurately. At this point I understand every word. It's a true work of art, and a message that has become even more relevant in the last few months.

GREAT reaction Molly Boy!! Indeed...Du Hast was amazing - this is incredible!! I had the same face as you when this was released! Having Germany heritage and knowing the language, I understood the lyrics. I highly suggest finding a version that subtitles the lyrics in English - it's quite profound what Rammstein did here! The production value of this video is top notch! It's cinematic. Basic gist - it's showing Germany's history (well, the violent/turbulent parts anyway) - from the Roman invasion, Weimar years, Nazi years, etc...lyrics deal with a displaced sense of patriotism. The Germans want to be proud and love their nation, but there is a guilt, almost shame, in doing so given how many horrors have occurred in their past. LOVE this track. Cheers!

The piano part at the outro is the melody from another of Rammstein’s tracks: “Sonne”. That track itself is well worth watching. Yep, Rammstein is full of synthesiser - it’s kind of a mix of metal and ‘Industrial’ (which is a rock genre from the 80s/90s integrating synths and noise). Rammstein is amazing. This is a deep rabbit hole!

This is one of the best videos from Rammstein and at the same time one of the most difficult content to fully understand. The song is about Germany (Deutschland) and the band's feelings about their home country which has a rather violent history (not only in WW2). It is a kaleidoscope of scenes from 2000 years of German history (some more symbolic, others painfully accurate) and additionally some scenes that might happen in the future when archaeologists are searching for artefacts of German history. The woman is Germania, played by the German actress Ruby Commey. Germania is not a literal person, but was a personification of Germany for centuries. All other main roles are played by the six members of Rammstein. The scene when the monks seem to eat Germania references to the Thirty Year's War (1618-1648), which started as a religious war. As a result of that war - masses of people starved or died by plagues. And the church took what little they had left to live on. If you are interested in more details about some of the historical events referenced in Rammstein's video, you may take a look at this content-wise analysis: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZSQlqiMgZ2rh9U Even for me as a German guy there were some details that I was not aware of. Also the lyrics are explained a bit and the assumed reason for Rammstein to come out with this video. And there is an explanation why the video caused some harsh reactions BEFORE it was fully published.

so the bare-bones explanation of this video is that it's a journey through german history, from the very earliest days through to the present (and the space stuff represents a future vision of germany), the black woman you see throughout is a representation of germany/germania (if you look close you can see that she's almost always wearing the colors of the german flag), who you can see alternately thriving, being abused, and abusing others. (also the dogs she gives birth to are a specifically german rare breed.) you can find tons of videos and articles explaining which periods and incidents specifically are being depicted. tbh i think this is one of the best and most thoughtful music videos ever made.

The lyrics in English - You (You have, you have, you have, you have) Have cried a lot (Cried, cried, cried, cried) Separated in spirit (Separated, separated, separated, separated) United in heart (United, united, united, united) We (We are, we are, we are, we are) Have been together for so long (You are, you are, you are, you are) Your breath's cold (So cold, so cold, so cold, so cold) The heart in flames (So hot, so hot, so hot, so hot) You (You can, you can, you can, you can) I (I know, I know, I know, I know) We (We are, we are, we are, we are) You (You stay, you stay, you stay, you stay) [Chorus] Germany - my heart in flames Want to love and damn you Germany - your breath's cold So young, and yet so old Germany! [Verse 2] I (You have, you have, you have, you have) I never want to leave you (You cry, you cry, you cry, you cry) One can love you (You love, you love, you love, you love) And want to hate you (You hate, you hate, you hate, you hate) Presumptuous, superior Take over, hand over/puke Surprise, invade Germany, Germany above everything [Chorus] Germany - my heart in flames Want to love and damn you Germany - your breath is cold So young, and yet so old Germany - your love Is a curse and a blessing Germany - my love I can't give you Germany! Germany! [Bridge] You I We All of you You (superior/overpowering, unnecessary) I (Übermenschen weary) We (The higher you climb, the further you fall) You (Germany, Germany above everything) [Chorus] Germany - your heart in flames Want to love and damn you Germany - my breath's cold So young, and yet so old Germany - your love Is a curse and blessing Germany - my love I can't give you Germany! The song is about the dichotomy betwen the old traditions and the modern, forward looking aspects of Germany and how they both love or hate different aspects of that duality.

I've been a Rammstein fan since Sehnsucht was released in North American in 1997. My best friend in high school had a metal head brother who was 12 years older than us, so I was exposed to TONS of different bands before they were mainstream. We saw Christoph on the cover of Sehnsucht and were pretty intimidated, but the music was awesome (though, I was a little freaked out by the moaning at the beginning of Spiel Mit Mir). We used to go camping at RV camp sites and we'd blare that album on our boom box to piss off all our neighbors. I bought Herzeleid from Sam Goody as soon as they imported it in '98 and it wasn't too long after that I found their Live Aus Berlin album AND VHS (which I still have). I finally saw them live in 2001 when they were on their Mutter tour. They were playing at a small venue called First Avenue in Minneapolis. It was my first concert and my friend and I were about 3 rows from the front, but the opening band's lead singer from CrossBreed pointed right where we were standing and wanted a mosh pit to open. I couldn't understand what he was saying, but my friend did and he pushed me way back because, frankly, I would've been knocked out because I was unaware. It was an awesome show. Because I owned the Live Aus Berlin album, I knew crowd interaction with "HEY!" chants. I can't remember what song it was, but at one point there was just a beat in the middle of a song and I knew the audience chanted "HEY!" in the Berlin concert, so I started it at the concert and it caught on. Paul Landers pointed right at me and then started his riff. It was awesome. I'm glad you're getting into Rammstein. I work for an R&D science laboratory and my boss is a literal genius. He grew up listening to Hip Hop, but he must've heard me talking about Rammstein with one of the German partners we had visiting our lab, so he decided to check out the Live Aus Berlin album and really liked it. He said it was the right amount of rhythm, rock, beat and that Industrial Metal sound for him, so he's starting his Rammstein journey too. PLEASE react to anything from the Mutter album! It's their best album.

This piece is gorgeous. The beauty that is modern Germany is a result of all of the good and ugly it has been through. Germany learned from the dark parts of its history and has forged itself into something powerful, beautiful, and magnificent. This song is the embodiment of all of that. If I can add a suggestion for more to listen to- Mein Herz Brennt. There is the standard version and the piano version. You could do a reaction where you watch the standard and then follow it up with the piano version. They will blow your socks off. 🤙🏼
