I'll keep my story short because it's so long, but basically I have had just about every single thing wrong with my teeth and jaw structure haha. I've had: a pallet widener, 6 total years of braces (2 separate sets at different times), 3 retainers, 2 permanent retainers, 7 teeth pulled, double maxillofacial jaw surgery + wisdom teeth removal + chin implant when i was 14. Basically, they broke both my jaws and implanted A TON of metal into my face in order so I could actually chew and bite stuff. Before this, only my back two molars would touch. I physically could not chew with my mouth closed because my jaw structure was so screwed. Couldn't bite anything off, the ham would stay in my sandwiches when I tried to bite a piece off. So they realigned everything and took all 4 of wisdom teeth out at the same time, as well as put in a chin implant. Yea, it was hell. Legit was one of those scenes from a movie where they take the bandage off someone's face and they don't recognize themselves. The hardest thing was the pain, not being able to eat, and not recognizing yourself when you look in the mirror. It was terrifying. It took me about 2 years to get used to. Also, I lost 14lbs in a week, because my throat was covered in cankersores, but we couldn't see because my mouth was banded shut and I couldn't open it. Whoops, so much for keeping it short lol. Anyway, took about a year for all the swelling to go down. But that was by far the worst experience of my life. I'd still do it again if I had the chance because I literally wasn't able to function. I'm okay now, but my bite is opening up again. My teeth barely touch in the front again. But it'll never be as bad as before. My damn bone structure is so stubborn!! Even with a bajillion implants it still wants to be wonky lol. Anyway, so proud of you Molly. Teeth/mouth issues are never fun. ❤️💙💜 if anyone has any questions btw I'll be happy to answer! :)

Oh also I ate/drank with a syringe for about 2-3mo for those of you who are curious. I also had to be constantly on NORCO or else the pain would be worse. Also had to sleep upright and couldn't have my face touch anything...that was SOOO hard for me because I always sleep on my sides and stomach lol. Also used google text to speech to talk to people because I really couldn't talk!

That’s a LOT. I’m 13 years old and have already had 7 teeth pulled (not including wisdom teeth). I just hate pulling out my own teeth so whenever they pulled out 5 at one time, it was mainly so my other teeth could grow in so I can get braces. I really hope your mouth got better :)

OH MY GOD! I feel you sooo much... What a horrorstory. Wow I can call myself soooo lucky, because I was in such a bad shape too, when I got my wisdom teeth removed but all went well. I had to get my wisdom teeth out, because I got arthritis with 16... and they can cause more pain and problems. So my wisdom teeth were chilling fine deep deep deep in my mouth and they had to saw into my jaw to get them out. Also, they found a lost milk tooth and a dead tooth while they were working on my mouth. So they pulled 4 wisdom teeth 1 adult tooth and 1 milk tooth at once. I am so happy, that I was put to sleep for this surgery. We went to a specialist, he was also a plastic surgeon, he did an amazing job. I could not use my mouth for 14 days and after just 14 everything was fine. Like... really OK. Looks like I was very very lucky. In that time of my life I was depressed, way to thin, had besides the arthritis other health problems, I was so lost, bullied, lost all my friends, all I had was pain... It could have gone so wrong. wow... Maybe it was because my immunsystem was overactive. I got my arthritis thanks to that. It was attacking my bones, flesh, eyes and digestive system. That stuff is gone now, but damaged my stomach forever. That year, with all the bulling in school, the illness, the pain, the chaos, University Hospital after University Hospital and doctor after doctor... it is as you said: I am so happy, that it is in the past and nobody should go through such thing. Keep going, you are so strong!

I’ve had three dental procedures before the age of 10. I’ve had a total of 13 teeth pulled with two permanent teeth, a chain attached to one tooth to bring it in correctly, and a frenectomy (the little bit of tissue that holds down the top lip was cut to help my giant tooth gap). I’ve had a cortisol injection into a tendon in my hip with a needle being stabbed into said tendon 30 times before injecting to help it soak in. (It didn’t even work so yay). I don’t know when I’m getting my wisdom teeth out but it’s gonna be soon. Not excited.

@@Liz-rf4qu I'm sorry you have to deal with something like self harm or suicide (if that's what your referring to) but truly any mental illness in some ways is different with a disability in the mix. I'm used to the tough topics as a certified trauma recovery coach so I wasn't scared to ask.

As someone with disabilities due to illness, I think it would be great if Molly brought up that discussion. Depression can be quite common for people with disabilities, and it's different when it's caused by illness. It's very challenging to deal with, particularly in young people. They often don't have contact with other young people dealing with the same/similar issues. 💖💖

My wisdom teeth removal story isn’t nearly as trying, but it’s kinda funny: I also have a tiny mouth (I’m a towering 5 foot 3 inches), and they had to chip holes in the sides of my jawbone and remove the teeth in chunks because they were coming in completely sideways. I was 14 and had never been sedated before (this was twilight sedation and not full anesthesia, so still breathing on my own), and when I woke up they still had the white sheet over my face that they use to shield you from the chaos going on in your mouth, and I WAS UTTERLY CONVINCED I WAS IN THE F-ING MORGUE. Once I realized I wasn’t, I couldn’t stop crying. Surgeon asked why I was crying and I just screamed, “I DON’T KNOW!!!” Apparently this happens to some folks, as one of the medications in the sedation cocktail basically gives you amnesia and can cause some serious delirium. I was crying down the hall, during xrays, on my way to the car...I couldn’t make it stop. The dental surgery center I went to didn’t do a great job at post-op, either. They had no wheelchairs, so they walked my ass down to the X-ray room IMMEDIATELY after waking me up from sedation (still crying). I passed out once in the hallway (they caught me) and once during the X-ray (they caught me again...still crying). Then a nurse and my dad WALKED ME DOWN THE FRONT STEPS TO THE CAR. I passed out again halfway down and the nurse and my dad caught me (only lightly crying at this point...I think I had worn myself out like a toddler does near the end of a tantrum). I also had to go back two weeks later because once the swelling had gone down I realized there was a chunk of my jaw bone that was left behind just sticking out from where the stitches had dissolved. Yeah, they aren’t in business anymore. I eventually healed up fine, though, and now I ask for benzodiazepines whenever I’m being sedated. I forgot to ask one other time and woke up crying for no reason and once again couldn’t stop, but when I had a heart procedure a few years ago that required twilight sedation I woke up, asked my surgeon how it went, then slurred “awesome” and gave him a high five. I foggily remember him laughing at/with me. 😂 Moral of the story: if sedation makes you nervous or you have a bad emotional reaction upon waking, tell your medical team during your pre-exam and they’ll take care of you. They would much rather have you high-fiving like a happy stoner than sobbing and thinking you’re in the morgue.

I just finished Grade 8 (in Australia we finish our school year in December and then start it in late January or early February). I turn 14 early next year. My year wasn’t as bad as your Grade 8, but I did lose all my friends and the people I had trusted most started bullying me. I became to emotionally and mentally unstable to do anything and couldn’t stand up for myself when I needed to. I stopped eating very much because of anxiety. I’ve always been a very smart kid who tops the class and loves school. I was still smart however my marks (although still very high) weren’t as good as they could have been and I started to resent going to school, I didn’t want people to continue making my life hell. I still feel horrible and can only hope that next year is not as bad. Oh and yes I have had an emergency surgery, I very badly cut my toe (there was only a bit of bone and muscle holding it together) I had to have surgery to get it put back together.

Okay so here's my family's thing with our teeth. My mom always had pretty good teeth up until she had me, my brother, and my sister and now they're chipped in different places. But then there's my dad who's always had bad teeth because he never went to the dentist as a kid and all. So anyway I end up with an under bite that I had to get fixed when I was in 3rd or 4th grade, and then my lower jaw has always been crowded and one of my teeth are leaning back a bit, and nearly all my wisdom teeth are sideways(thankfully they have never bothered me). And then my younger brother has like perfect teeth naturally which is incredibly annoying. And then my younger sister has some really crooked teeth and her two top middle ones are pointed inwards. So technically my sister has the worst of all us, I'm in the middle, and my brother then has perfect teeth because that's just how life works I guess lol

I'm 4'11. I know the joys of being short and having a small mouth. I've had so much dental work throughout highschool. However, I don't remember the time frame anymore of when things happend. I've had several teeth pulled from both upper and lower jaw because the adult teeth would not come in properly, had a jaw expander expand my jaw by a centimeter, had braces for a while to fix those adult teeth that were growing in wrong, after getting the braces off I got a permanent retainer bar across my bottom front teeth and a moulded retainer for the upper jaw. After that things were good for a few years, and then my wisdom teeth had to get removed. I barely remember the procedure since I did not want to be awake for it, but I remember giggling at the surgeon while I was coming out of the anesthetic because I heard him talking about how I had a tiny mouth and he went 'oh she heard me.' But after all that, I have never once had a cavity.

If I were you I would opt to be fully put under if you have the option. My wisdom tooth removal surgery turned from a 1-2 hour procedure into a 5 hour procedure because they only gave me local anesthetic and laughing gas. At one point I stopped breathing the gas because I was so relaxed, but then I started to feel sensation from the surgery and so I started hyperventilating out of fear. At this point they weren’t even half way done. They had to completely stop, calm me down, re-anesthetize me and start me on the laughing gas again all while my mouth is held wide open. I had lasting lock-jaw problems for 2 years after that due to the trauma all of this caused my jaw from being forced open for so many hours. And don’t even get me started on the recovery process...

My appendix burst while I was away at school because I waited too long to go into the hospital. My mom drove up that night (a 7 hour drive), and managed to get there before my open surgery in the morning. It’s been 7 weeks and I’m still extremely fatigued, get daily headaches and a few other symptoms keeping me from living my normal life again. I had to withdraw from all of my classes and the whole experience was pretty traumatic for me. It really showed me who were my real friends and who actually cared about me. I’m hoping to figure out why I’m experiencing so many symptoms still before the next semester starts (which will be at a new university closer to home).

I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth. As I suffer with anxiety I could not deal with a removal under Valium (here in the UK 🇬🇧) so I had to wait longer for it to be done under general anesthetic in hospital just before Christmas in my early 20's. Now at 40 years old I am still suffering with anxiety on top of CRPS and other medical issues. Just recently got a dog who is in training to become my support/service dog through a owner trained organisation. He is a 4 month old English Springer Spaniel called Floki. I have also just had two molars out and I am constantly having shards of tooth making their way up through my healing gums... Very sore on top of the 24/7/365 (since 17 years old) pain caused by CRPS. I don't remember what it is like to be pain free xx

Omg, I wish you good luck and hugs! Here's a tip, (oh wait it's the day of...), if you hate looking at the needle, turn your head and breath, focus on the breathing. If you can handle watching the needle, focus on it and your breathing so you know when to expect the pain. Don't hold your breath, that'll make it worse. I say all this because I get IVs and shots and other needles all the time.

Then the other one was when traveling alone and no one said about the 2 hour wait, i was pissed i hate flying and get bad anxiety too. If i didn't ask if you were ok or needed any help my mum would find me on the other side of the world and slap me up the back of the head. The last one was i don't know what i look like, that caught me off guard and i just broke down into tears cause i take it for granted. I really don't know if I can say it in english but I got my wisdom teeth removed because of the same problems you now have with your molars. It just got infected all the time because I couldn't brush them. I don't think it was the only reason but now I'm really glad that despite that I haven't had any problems. It's like always everything bad coming at the same time. I'm glad you're through! Love from Germany.

You are one tough cookie, I had an infected tooth once, i was 12 and had eaten popcorn and had missed a small piece of it which was stuck in between my back molars. This wouldn't have been too bad apart from the fact I was stuck out at sea. With no painkillers. Que an emergency trip to the dentist as soon as I came ashore... 1 week later.... really, really hurt. Luckily everything was okay, didn't need anything major doing it it, just a filling.

I have a super tiny mouth! As a kid I had a total of 12 surgeries related to either my ears or my teeth (I was born with a cleft palate, so it caused some issues). Thank god I only had 2 wisdom teeth to remove! I wear a mouth guard to sleep too Molly. Mine is fitted to my bottom teeth since those are the teeth that move when I clench and grind. Works so much better than my old mouth guard for my upper teeth!

I was 26 when my impacted wisdom teeth decided to act up. All four were taken out at the same time, and I was given codeine for the pain. Which, I then found out, makes me deathly nauseous, so I was heaving and heaving, and totally thought I was going to rupture the stitches, and end up hospitalized for dehydration. Luckily, that was averted. However, my situation was a far cry from the torture you suffered! Girl, you have been through it!

Dude dont even get me started first off low immune system and I'm small 4'10" and dental mystery of hell, so I have an under bite and a cross bite and I had a male dentist when I was like 9 sit on top of me and yelled at me to say sayonara to my tooth and I screamed at him to stop and the secretary realized what was happening was wrong and told my mom to go back and get me out of there, he broke my tooth in half and I had to wait to see the oral surgeon to have the roots removed.... laughing gas doesnt work for me. I screamed bloody murder purple hippos were falling on my face the oral surgeon had to shut the door I was scaring other patients. I had oral surgery again for my wisdom teeth my freshman year of high school my wisdom teeth because I have a tiny mouth because everything on me is tiny... they literally have to use kids x ray at the dentist. They removed my wisdom teeth that didnt have room to come in that werre poking to break through the gums and another tooth at the same time and they put a screw in my jaw to help with the braces I would get later. I got braces and a pallet expander probably like 2 or 3 weeks later. I had all kinds of elastics and metal bonds on my molars to help with the braces so I couldn't brush those 2 molars for 2 years while I had braces then I got a retainer and I almost had to have head gear. So now the molars that had the metal bonds on them broke I had one rebuilt when I had dental coverage. I now have disability and am on Medicare and it doesnt cover dental so the other molar that is broken would cost about 800 to get fixed out of pocket or get it pulled but I'm all set on being re traumatized so for now that broken molar just sits in my mouth and I have always been good at brushing and flossing and stuff need to get one of those new tooth brushes that has the water pick built in .I disassociate when I get dental work done and I can see myself from above due to trauma.

I’m also on disability and have Medicaid. Just found out that I have five cavities, and one root canal needed only on one side of my mouth (they haven’t checked the other side yet). The cause is not hygiene related, but medical issues, and medications that have caused my teeth to weaken over time (which I was unaware of until it happened). My out of pocket cost for just one side of my mouth is upwards of $3,000...with lots of discounts because they don’t accept my insurance.

I also had a lot of dental procedures. I had braces THREE separate times. I had to keep getting them taken off to do other procedures like having my palette widened, getting 4 permanent molars removed due to overcrowding, and a hole drilled into my gums to attach a chain to a tooth that was coming in wrong. I now have two permanent retainers and impeccable dental hygiene!

I don’t have wisdom teeth either... I had to get a dental x-ray to assess my TMJ issues and the dentist was like “have you already gotten your wisdom teeth removed?” And I was like no? He was like oh well you must be one of the lucky people who don’t have them! Both my sisters got theirs removed as part of their braces so if it’s genetic I clearly got a different gene there.

I had my wisdom teeth taken out when I was twelve. One of my bottom ones was impacting a twelve-year molar, and a top one was growing out of the roof of my mouth. I later had to get that impacted molar removed because even though they tugged on it to help it come up, it wouldn't. Both surgeries were performed by the same guy, and I had minimal swelling and no bruising. It was a fantastic experience!

Molly, I can sympathize and empathize with you! All my dentists kept telling me that I was having tooth problems because I don’t have good hygiene. Until I had a couple root canals one month the next month I went in and the dentist was baffled. She apologized to me and said you have decay build up in one month under the root canal I just did. Long story short I had the rest of my teeth removed. I got dentures but they don’t fit right and I can’t use them to earth. So I basically gum my food now. I gave up! I spent years and hundreds of thousands on My teeth. I am just tired and upset so I just gave up for now.

Everybody has a different pain tolerance and everybody reacts different to analgesics. I'm just, like, horrified at the stuff you've gone through, dang! I kind of just want to hug you now. When I was in grade school I chipped my upper central incisor when I fell off the jungle gym, it also caused the tooth to kind of shift sideways so one side kind of sticks out. I believe I was in middle school when I got a 'cap' on the tooth, but within two months it had broken off. The tooth has never actually hurt or anything so I never felt the need to get it re-fixed.
Eton Bachs it was just supposed to be a joke like ahah I’m first ( I’m never first ) Your the one who is being really rude, what did I do to you. Nothing! Why do you need to put your two cents into it. You are being rude and your trying to put me down!
