Except for this case since it's a guide dog and it's extremely trained, it can be kinda dangerous in other cases. I mean I know that it looks cute, but if a normal dog does that I would not encourage that. If a dog that is not trained like that take an item of the owner when they leave and another person that is with the dog tries to take the item back some dogs could even bite because that's a resource

@theflashgirl20573 жыл бұрын
Honestly it very similar to how molly said in an old video of her that she can "smell" her mom entering. By smell in this case i mean sensing the unique energy imprint something has. We have that smell too. Just like how dogs can take the scent. They are very similar. I do that with my grandpa's stuff. I sleep with the objects he used to use bc it still has its energy. The problem is that that energy imprint slowly gets replaced with your energy imprint. That is why i keep multiple objects of my grampa that i don t touch until the current object has been completely replaced with my energy imprint.

I have had 2 dogs and they both have done that. The first one loved my slippers and as soon as I took them off he would steal them to cuddle with them (he also used to steal my dads slippers), and my 2nd dog Marvel always steals my mom’s slipper as soon as she leaves the house, she grabs it and brings it to wherever I am (since I’m usually home with her) and will just want it beside her. And if I leave, she typically finds my sweater and sleeps on it…to the point when I leave I purposely leave my sweater out so she can cuddle it while I’m gone. Marvel also steals my dads socks, he has to constantly go looking for his socks cause she steals them right out of the basket just to cuddle them. We joke that sometimes she loves our scent more than us, lol. Whoever isn’t around, that’s the scented object she takes. Since I’ve had 2 dogs that have always done this, and this newer pup that tends to mainly do it when the person is gone or in a different part of the house, I fully believe it’s a comfort thing. The fact that Bennix is only stealing the slipper while Molly is gone makes me think he just wants something with her scent to cuddle with. And think of it, nothing probably has our natural scent as strong as what was on our feet. We often sweat there, we don’t have any perfume or lotion or product there, it’s our pure natural scent.
@karanolan2 жыл бұрын
My dog does this as well with socks. He will hoard a pile near his food dish, but never chews them. We have come home to see him sleeping with a sock under his head. He also likes to lick our used pillowcases to fall asleep
@loes68393 жыл бұрын
The slipper thing can be an early sign of separation anxiety. My rehome did this in the beginning, he pulled stuff that smelled like me to his bed all the time. As we build our bond and trained being alone he stopped doing it but I would take it serious as it's possible he has separation anxiety (which is a normal by product of being rehomed a lot in their first years). I don't have experience with service dogs but I can imagine separation anxiety can be a common issue since your bond is so much deeper and you really depend on each other way more than with a pet. -from a certified dog trainer

Seeing the bond you and Bennix bond so quick is amazing. The fact that he was returned and had so much change in his life so far and is bringing your slipper to lie down with him when you leave the room tells me he is a bit insecure at the moment. I think he’s worried you’re leaving him and not coming back. He’ll settle in the longer you work together. You’ve already gained his love. My lab has also stolen a pair of my slippers after I went to Uni. Apparently, mum had brought them down to wash, started to do something else and hadn't realised he took them for two weeks. He never chewed or destroyed them, just hid them in his bed, under his giant caterpillar soft toy. My mum found them when she went to wash his bedding 😂😂. He also has a habit of stealing singular socks of mine and carries them around, again he doesn't chew them or destroy them in any way. As I said I am away at uni for most of the year and his 'stealing' behaviour has increased since starting uni, so it is probably comfort-related like your Bennix

Before watching your channel being blind would’ve been one of my worst fears , not that I want it to happen at all but I know that if for whatever reason my vision were to get worse and extremely bad , I know I could be an empowered active person like Molly as a blind person . I can only imagine how empowered molly leaves other blind fans , Molly’s impact is what’s so great about this world .
@oliviacaron70883 жыл бұрын
This and been a fear of mine since I was 5 (I got eye patches because of a lazy eye and bad vision in general). I am no where near blind, I lack depth perception, but I can see well enough to read and drive. Since this was a fear I have trained myself to "be blind" one day. I mapped out my house with my eyes closed and don't need to see to do most everyday tasks at home. However I know it's no where near what a truly blind peroan goes through. It has helped my fears that one day if it did happen I know I can survive. Also Molly is an inspiration because she makes it look possible (I know it is but my fear tells me its not). I also find myself counting steps in a new house and stuff like that. I need to walk through a house a few times but after that can basically manage to get around without seeing. I hope this wasn't offensive to blind people. I'm not downplaying their struggle at all, and I certainly would have a lot more to learn if it happened to me. I told my parents this one time (the only people I've told) years ago and they told me I'm crazy. I just figured it was a good, similar comment to share my experience.
@Chantal_P-v4x3 жыл бұрын
I remember a recent video and the story of how that dog just wasn't fully happy with another 'doggie job'. I'm sooooo happy he got another chance to guide, as it's soooo obvious just how much he actually loves it. It's been neat to learn that guide dogs (or really any working dog) chooses to work or simply not to. It makes sense, but I just wouldn't have really thought about it before.
@lizvdp80663 жыл бұрын
Yeah, people often thing service dogs are 'sad' to work, but the truth is they love their job and are focused on what they are doing. If they don't love their job they will simply not work or show handlers very clearly that that is not the life for them. In the service dog program I work with all the dog 'choose' their career. For example dogs that just love to play fetch, get to work for someone in a wheelchair, dogs that are very empathic get to work as an autism dog or as an institution dog, dogs that love to work with their nose get to be diabetic alert dog or another type of alert dog, dogs that like to lead and scan the environment become guides and so on. Our program is very lucky to have a sister program that covers other types of service dogs than our program, so in total we have almost all the types of service work (legal in my country) as an option ready for the dogs, so they truly get to do what they love best and if no service work is right for them that is 100% ok too. Not every pup wants to be a service dog and those get that option too and just live their life out as a pet in a loving family. An unhappy service dog is no service dog is something we say here just because we want the service dogs to love their job and live their best life and not be forced to do something they do not want. If they don't want the job, they'll let you know and as a trainer or handler it is the job then to except the dog's wishes and give them their happy life somewhere else and move on with the next dog that does want the job.

I would GUESS - and this is only a guess, as I’m not qualified to make any sort of diagnosis - that it’s probably a manifestation of separation anxiety, due to either being returned to Mira initially or being around hospice patients one day and having them gone the next and wondering where they are/why he can’t see/be with them any longer. It sounds like he’s self soothing with something that has your scent when you’re out of your bedroom without him. I’d also guess that his insistence of sleeping on the bed more likely than not comes from his time at the hospice facility. It doesn’t seem very likely to me that a handler who returned him after only a few weeks would’ve let him sleep on their bed with them. More likely than not, his insistence of sleeping on your bed at night his related to his stint at the hospice facility. Do you know if the black dog with white markings at the park area at Mira was the female you initially walked with in the kennels or if it’s “Mac Attack”? I’m trying to figure out which dog that was, and I’m thinking it looks more like him (MicMac)?

Molly, I started following you when I began my journey to getting my Medic Alert Service Dog, Chewie. OUR Service Dog training took about 1 year and i worked with her about 8 hrs/ day every single day during that year. Since she needs to know when my health is off she was scent trained and she was even trained to track me if we get separated for any reason because of my health. She's been "my dog" since she was weaned off her doggie mom and upon coming home with me she has always slept on my very first pillow which ive had literally my entire life and is about as flat as possible. She does not want to sleep on anything else. She has even tracked me through the woods by following my scent during our training. You mentioned that Mr Benelux has gotten your shoe and held it close, seems to me that when you're away from him he's holding onto something with your personal scent deeply embedded in it like my service Dog, Chewie, only wanting to lay down on my super flat pillow which permanently has my scent embedded in it despite all the times it's been washed. Mr Benelux is definitely a a very dapper dude.
@eadaoinmcgugan50703 жыл бұрын
So he is indeed seeking comfort when you're away. I think it would be wise to see a trainer about that sooner rather than later because if for whatever reason you can't take him somewhere that behaviour is likely to get worse. Basically he's been abandoned before and he thinks that when you leave that's what gunna happen and it may seem like a tiny gesture but for such an intelligent and super well trained dog it's actually pretty sad. I'm so glad it's you he was matched with because the spark and bond is very clear All the love 🤍💜🤍

Would it be okay to have a pair of slippers that are okay for him to have when he is on his own? He is not damaging them. If Molly wears them and gives him permission to have a particular slipper would that be okay? Transitional objects can be helpful when dealing with changes
@eadaoinmcgugan50703 жыл бұрын
Probably not he needs to feel safe enough that he doesn't need one and trust that molly will always come back. Having his own shoe kind of just reaffirms his anxiety as it doesn't deal with the issue at it's root. It could still escalate in that scenario much like anxiety in humans, if it's not dealt with it often gets much worse. I don't think it would take much to train him out of it, cesar milan would be perfect. He's a super intelligent and clearly loyal boy who just wants to work and love and be loved bless him
@eadaoinmcgugan50703 жыл бұрын
The fact he isn't damaging them is really awesome because it means he respects molly and knows what he can and can't do but also it says in my opinion that he has some left over trauma from his life before molly. The best dogs can have problems going through something like that I've seen most often aggression which is fear and anxiety based but I don't believe there is a dog that can't be helped. And Mr bennelux is nowhere near that's stage he's just worried and thinks he's gunna be alone again little does he know that won't happen.

The energy imprint of your loved one on an item is so strong that can feel that they are still there even if they are physically long gone from your life

Came versus Guide dog is always a fun topic to me. I love to say no matter what, carry your cane. If you are working a guide dog, carry your cane. Guide dogs are amazing, but they can have bad days, they can get sick, they can get hurt. Dog if you are out and your pup is not up for working, your cane is your life saver. Also, you as a guide dog handler tell the dog where to go, left, right, cross the street. Getting lost on occasion happens. So the tactile feedback they spoke about in the video is true with a cane. With a guide dog you don’t know that on the right side of the sidewalk as your walking is a fire hydrant and then a telephone pole. You won’t know that with a dog, but with a cane you will find everything and be able to familiarize yourself with your surroundings and from there hopefully be able to find your way!!!! Great series Molly and all of the staff that helped make this series that much better!

My dog (a rescue golden doodle) carries around shoes as well. She's never torn them up, despite tearing up every toy she's gotten. I think it's definitely a comfort thing, given the dog's past. Our pup has always had attachment issues and struggles with being left alone. I bet he just wants to always be with you! It can certainly be a pain when you can't find your shoes in the morning, but it's also so cute and sweet.

It's definitely option B) They alway choose the smelliest things like slippers because the scent is most intense. It's the same reason why dogs loves to sleep on your bed or spot on the sofa. It's love girl 💕

My pup used to take our shoes to his bed when we left him alone for more than 15mins as well. It's cause it smells like you and it brings him comfort. It is annoying when they do it but it is an excellent sign that he has accepted you as part of his pack and that he trusts and loves you

I absolutely loved Bennix’s head resting on your beloved slippered foot. His head resting on your boot style slipper would make an awesome print design for a hoodie. My 12 yr old toothless 4 pound Maltese Twinkle has always (since age 5 months) stolen my ballet style houseshoes when her anxiety is high. She just takes a single one to wherever she is lying. Especially when I am out without her or very busy ( like cooking/ignoring her) during thunder/lightening. She never chews them, occasionally slobbers. It definitely decreases her anxiety. I think your boy has decided you are his and when he can’t have you ,your scent (on your slipper) gives him a good feeling. Just like little kids with a Teddy bear or blanket. Its a “security slipper”.

aww adorable! Also with Bennix taking your slipper it could be a comfort thing dor when you're not there and he wants to be near you. This could be the case as he may have previous abandonment issues with the fosters, then the handlers, then a blind handler, to the hospice, to the handlers and then to you. Within his short life period he's been through so many parents and he may just be feeling anxious that you're going to leave too which is very sad. Or it could be because he's trying to keep them safe for you to help when you want to put them on again. More than likely it's probably the first but i'm so happy for you! You've found an amazing doggy life partner and i'm so happy for you as a team! Go Killer bees! x

The amount of utter trust and confidence between a guide dog and blind handler in regards to entering and riding on an escalator is astounding. While not blind I have depth perception issues rendering stairs (visually) flat, so I am 1000% impressed with EVERYONE'S performance level!

They let dogs on the bed in hospice care because the patients are usually bed-ridden and weak. They encourage the dog to lay beside the patient on their bed. Dogs are angels on earth. They are the best thing that's ever happened to humans. We are so fortunate to have them.

Also want to add. ....I think you have a universally amazing impact on your viewers Molly. Everyone can see how special you are and we all seem to feel your emotion. You are certainly unique and people can feel that. You've also opened eyes to Crocs! I never knew they could be so stylish! I want some now, Ha. Bennix's attachment to your slipper is surely his way of being close to you because I think he has bonded with you so quickly. I guess it could have been any item of clothing but the slippers are always out there for him! So cute. At least he's passed the puppy chewing stage. I hope he enjoys the new donut beds you have for him at home. Something i have noticed in the UK is their harnesses are very boring fluorescent functional looking things unlile the beautiful leather ones you have which are really crafted and lovely. I look forward every week to your videos.

Not an animal psychologist but a career petsitter and trainer of 13 years. Based on my experience and what you've shared of his history, it's most likely to comfort himself. It's like assurance that you're coming back. Which is great since he'll probably want to work for you as long as possible. I also think he'll benefit from getting close to your mom and dad, or other people who will make regular appearances in Bennix's life. Just finding ways to remind him that this is his forever family, and you are always going to be there for him as best you can.

Molly I had to laugh about the slipper. I have a greater swiss mountain dog and he also takes a single shoe but never chews it. Bennix is a sweetheart. This is my second greater swiss mountain dog and Bennix has a lot of the same traits as both of my dogs have had. I think mountain breeds just have a very sweet special personality. My dog....Ty is strictly pet but very loving just like Bennix. I live in the country and walk him without a leash because he never will let me out of his sight. He is tri-color and my constant companion. I am 73 so we are always together. congrats on getting a wonderful dog.

For Molly's editor: I'm pretty sure it is "O&M Instructor" (orientation and mobility), not ONM Instructor. Tiny error, but could be confusing for some, if they were to google more on this after seing this video.

My sister has a dog who really misses her when she’s at work. When she goes, to keep himself calm, he grabs one of her shoes or a piece of clothing and puts it on the bed with him. I assume it’s so he has her scent with him even when she’s not there. I think it’s the sweetest thing when they do that because you know that they must really love and miss you.
