Based upon how manipulative her mother is, I wonder if it's not that her paternal family didn't want anything to do with her but her mother alienated them after her father's death and just told her they didn't want to know her.

I kind of wanted to suggest op to contact her dad's lawyer and ask whether or not he knew her dad's family and perhaps asked them whether or not they can meet. I saw two reddit aita where parents alienate their children from their grandparents over petty/greedy reasons that ends with the grandparents finding out about their grandkids on deathbed. I know it might be hard like they might be biased and judging, but they're probably op's only 'sane' blood relatives. So to say, just open the door, expect nothing nor accept any that are offered. Just talk.

@@mercuriallily this may sound harsh but still applies. Sounds like both people didn't do a proper screening of their chosen partner and their personalities/priorities on both sides before starting a family (if it's even biologically both of theirs). Sounds likely they were winging it and assuming any glaring issues they had in their relationship would be ignored for the sake of the kid/s (especially with the language being used in the comment, implying not being on the same page about raising children together in the first place). A proper foundation built on hard conversations and choosing the right partner is CRITICAL in anything long term.

6 years I think. The story implies that the golddigging ex wife took all/most of his money save the house they are living in, and perhaps even paying for his share of the house cleaned him out. Even so it's not a good look when the step son just spent a gap year and apparently has no funds to show for it, and isn't willing to get a student loan.

@mnomadvfx

It's not a bad idea so long as there are no other parents still in the picture, and as long as you are willing to treat those children like part of the family. In this case though it kinda seems like the step dad would have been on his own if he did so as the mother seems like she was treating her daughter as dead weight.

Weekly shoutout on these kinda stories to remind people to pay attention to children when families blend. It's unfortunately quite common for one of the previous families kids or even both to get pushed out [ if the parents decide to have a new child together ]. This crap needs to be called out ASAP because even if it doesn't change the crappy attitude and lack of love, it can ensure the child(ren) get the required care and attention until they're able to leave.
@BrightElk
@BrightElk 2 ай бұрын
I’ve been paying attention because it happened to both my husband and I. Disenfranchised as children from a previous marriage when parents remarry. It has forever changed how I view blended families and tainted my view of remarrying with dependant children. I have only seen it go well once. All other attempts have blown up spectacularly. Needless to say if my husband and I do not work out I have decided not to bring home dates or remarry until my daughter is grown up and out of the home. She should not be forced to be subjected to a new person in her life when she is still too young and naive to speak up for herself and defend herself. I have also heard of way too much sexual violence against girls in these situations as well.

I’m always amazed by the partners who know their significant others will happily abandon their family after they pass. So they have to take such measures to make sure the money is t wasted or given away to someone else’s family. It reminds me of the mom who died and left everything to her child instead of her husband because she knew he’d give it all to his new wife and kids. And he surely tried. Tried to get his own child to give up house, trust fund, and all other personal items to give to his stepdaughters and wife. It’s crazy how quickly people switch up just so they don’t have to be alone.

In my experience, only 1 of 2 things happens when you are abused by a parent. You gaslight yourself to hell and eventually become the parent, or you can't unsee that your parents are monsters and you leave in pieces but not a monster. You might even be more empathetic and considerate of others because you've seen the dark side. OP is obviously the second option. Mom (who likely had bad parents herself) is the first one.

I know a couple of friends who are therapist and your mother has shown mad signs of narcissism because honestly she focuses more on her step siblings which is a big problem instead of you sometimes because the way you explain it sounds like she doesn't even care for you anymore and she doesn't even show a bit of sympathy

Op's mom trying to steal money that is legally OP's and solely intended for OP and then saying she'd raised her to be more compassionate...? Where's your compassion to your own daughter?

OP, if you read this, your mother is living in a world of her own. You're certainly not in it, which is good for you. Knowing how unrealistic and delusional she was for claiming something that isn't hers, it's mind boggling. Also, I think you should contact your dad's lawyer and see if he could connect you to your paternal family. Knowing how your mom being that unreasonable and petty, I bet she lied on some part. I suggest you this because they might as well be the only 'sane' blood relatives you have. And sure, they might be biased and judging because you're your mother's daughter, but tell them that you only want to know your dad and to clear things up, get to know, probably over some coffee. No money/help asked. Just talk.

why is it so common in these reedit stories when a parent remarries, the original kids are treated like shit

boo hoo for the mom. like her feelings are the only thing that mattered. makes you think why he left all of it to OP.

That’s like asking for rent which is only fair if they ask it from the rest of the kids

let see the post starts with my dad and mom never married because his family hated her I can see why they saw her for who she was and dad didn't because she put on a show then OP says they didn't want anything to do with her so I'll guess that was just mom saying it I'll bet OP was never given the opportunity to be with them because mom knew they'd expose her faster than anything plus depending where OP would possibly get survivors benefits if dad died in an accident or something.

The best thing to do is to ignore all the messages and Mom is giving you and whenever if you believe in God whenever you just need help just take it to the Lord and do not share your college funds with any anyone unless you trust them but

Hypothetical future update "mom's new family has abandoned her and she has tried reaching out. I still have her blocked. She showed up at my school to see and speak with me, I let the campus know that my mother passed away long ago and I had no idea who that was. She was escorted out by security".... not real but I'd love it of that happened
