Honestly it's up to Op at the end of the day if she forgives her father, but all the heavy lifting needs to be on him to fix the relationship. He destroyed it, so it's up to him to rebuild it and not cop out to evil stepmother made me do it excuse. Even if the stepmother was telling the truth, he kicked out his child who at the time was effectively paralysed, to keep his bed warmer happy. If you can't count on someone in a time of need, then how can you ever trust them again?

I like this and honestly it is a lot better than ‘just dump him’. I get tired of people who are so ready to advise ditching a relationship when A) they have no personal experience and B) no personal investment. Caution is always advisable, and I would recommend Father seek counseling and work on building back the trust his actions destroyed. It’s not an impossible task, and if OP is willing to give him the chance, then it’s an investment she can make work for her if she chooses.

He was discussing this with his parents, and his parents even said that there were no business related things going on at the renewal. not to mention he didn't get angry with his kid either in the messages, which is impressive, it is much easier to be cruel and wicked to a person if you're not seeing them face to face. The actual actions that he takes and all the info that is revealed about him through op grandparents seem to actually disprove this by a lot. not to mention he is the one who initiated the divorce and kicked out his ex-wife. that doesnt seem like his ex-wife lost interest in him but more so the other way around. The grandparents are great people for taking care of OP but they are wrong in saying that the Dad shouldn't have been mentioned or did they forget his fight with them on how he completely sided with the stepmom. If the father wants to make wrong decisions and just reach out needing something without apologizing he should be feeling part of the consequences because he never believed OP. So the grandparents and father have a secret conversation but decided not to tell OP about it until everything came to a boiling point. They didn't think that through. There's only one way the stepmom could be convincing in what she's saying about OP. Just because someone is older doesn't automatically make them an honest person all the time.

This father must be heartless. I can't imagine throwing out a family member who had an accident and needs care. No matter what the reason, throwing someone who is seriously ill out on the street is wrong. This is simply inhumane. This father is as bad a man as the stepmother. What terrible people! I feel sorry for such a family. This father had no feelings for his daughter for years and willingly believed his stepmother's nonsense. Now that he has come to terms with her, he blames it all on her. This is a grown man who threw his sick child out onto the street under the pretext his wife gave him. He is not retarded and is responsible for his actions. It's not like the evil stepmother from the fairy tale controls him and he has to treat Cinderella badly. He was simply a bad father and now he regrets it, but not enough to do anything himself. His parents had to organize a meeting with his own daughter for him! And this guy runs his own company? You don't make a child out of him. He knew exactly what he was doing and clearly chose his stepmother over his daughter. Now he's old and doesn't want to be alone, so he kind of regrets it. I would only give him a chance if he shows that he can rebuild the relationship with his daughter on his own initiative. Not that he is a flag in the wind and sometimes he listens to his wife and other times to his parents, as if he had no mind or opinion of his own. Treating a parent by a child as a child and justifying behavior as if the parent were a child is referred to in psychology as parentization and this is psychological violence.

I say if she wants to rebuild the relationship have it involve therapy and strong boundaries. If he goes back on it and does anything of this sort again then she can cut him out knowing she gave him a chance and doesn't have to feel bad about never having done so. What it is like played out in real life is much different from what we read on a post. If anything one big boundary that must be set is that step mom is never under any circumstances allowed near her nor is he allowed to facilitate any kind of communication between them.

After finding out that OP is the daughter, the events make more sense. There are a number of women who, upon becoming stepmothers (especially to kids that are used to it just being them and their dad) get jealous of how close their husbands are to their new step-daughter. They see it as a sensual intimacy, when it is just a normal father-daughter relationship. They see the step-daughter as competition. It’s more obvious when the stepmother joins when the daughter is a teen and has been helping care for the father for years.

We often forget that humans are part of the animal kingdom. When seeking a mate, most animals don’t want to be bothered with the children of a potential suitor and will bully and even kill them. This applies to humans as well.

Her dad just seems all around weak. You kick your only child out because of someone else's influence, you go no contact because you're too "ashamed" to admit you're wrong, you allowed a woman to move into your home and cause discord between you and your child who had never given you any problems, and I also noticed how it wasn't him that invited her to the vowel renewal it was the step-mom that reached out. Weak, weak, weak.

Go to counseling work on what you both have lost because of her, rebuild your father daughter relationship if that's what you want, there are certain dad's/moms out there that don't deserve any chances, but your dad isn't one of them in my opinion I wish you both well and good luck

The way I see it, the father made a mistake cause Reddit doesn’t understand what manipulation means. Manipulation is a dangerous tool in the wrong hands. He seemed genuinely remorseful and didn’t throw any tantrums and had any banshee breakdowns. He knew he messed up and owned up to it. And he’s taking the necessary steps to try and sort of make it right. He’s better than some other fathers/mothers who won’t own up to their mistakes. Whether or not he deserves another chance is up to the OP, but I’d say he’s in the books for another shot.

It's a middle ground between NTA and YTA the post while kinda over the top, was very deserved. He was acting like a terrible parent. As if kicking anyone out of the house after they have a terrible ingury wasn't bad enough, he sided with someone who was screaming at a bedridden person.

OP should have documented the stepmom's lies by having her fights be in text form. (Hind sight is 20/20 though.) If I were OP, I would reconcile with her dad on the condition of weekly combined therapy along with individual therapy. The step family manipulation/isolation/lack of genuine cohesion is a common enough occurrence to be a trope. Man should have done therapy when the stepmom came into their lives. Therapy allows people to process their crap, and maybe the stepmom would have gotten to the root of why she hated/resented OP so much and not wasted her time married to a father or resolved the issue and had a genuine relationship with OP. I dunno. All I know is that therapy works to uncover shit we are masking or burying.

NTA. The fallout was inevitable and just so happened to go about that way given that, again, STEP MOMSTER wouldn't mind her place and kept poking the hornet's nest. She didn't have to reach out to OP or tell her anything, if her father was gonna reach out, he would've, instead she had to put herself in the middle and burned more bridges than just that of father and daughter with her lies. None of what the father does will ever make up for the time lost with OP or his blatant favoritism of his wife over his DAUGHTER.

Reddit is a very vengeful place. It sounds like OP is making a very emotionally mature decision. They aren’t automatically forgiving her father, what she should do is sue the pants off her step mother for defamation

Can’t work because you need to prove defamation was done. The issue relays in a he said she said cat fight situation. Case would be dropped. All she could do is either forgive and forget or do something petty.
