The sense of community sentiment really resonates with me. We tend to want to tear each other down vs build each other up. If you don't fit into a certain box (six pack, great skin, great hair, biceps, etc) you will have a hard time finding a place in our community and people will go to great lengths to keep you out of the community and distance themselves from you. I just feel like the rest of society is busy trying to tear us down that we shouldn't be doing that to each other. Who knows, maybe it will change as we get older. Great video, love your mom! 😊

Your mom seems so chill. My mother, who I love conditionally, would always ask me things like - 'How don't you work much for school' even though I was the best in school or 'Don't look like that' after which I got plastic surgery. You're lucky to have what you have. Edit: playing the piano was the best thing in my life - but that also went down the tubes due to my parents 'encouraging'. I also sang in a choir and even toured but again, that is the past. I have still one of my passions - IT - at which I excel. I just wonder if this is my path.

❤You have a relationship with your Mother like I had with mine. You touched on subject that I believe is so important and that is...don't come out until YOU are ready. Being outed or dragged out of the closet, no matter what the intentions are, is so so unhealthy. When I was ready to come out, in my late teens, my family was so supportive. Thank you for sharing... I was 12 when my mum asked me if I was gay .... and I said yes! Her response was thank goodness you're aware, now I can concentrate on your brothers for grand kids. I don't think I formally came out to my family, they all, close and extended kinda just accepted this is who I was/am. Also consider, my dad too me to my first ballet class at age six. Now which young boy has that happen and then have the support of your dad through all of this madness. My mum still also had all those questions your mum is asking. My words to young gay people is always the following. "Come out to yourself first! You do not need to tell anyone. Should the occasion arise that they/anyone asks you if you're gay/lesbian/queer, you can answer with self confidence that yes I am... Anything they think or say would not, should not affect you and how you feel about yourself. You OWN who you are" For those who don't have that support, there are those of us in our broader community who feel for you and understand the struggles you have had to go through...

Great video.... As a gay man, I've never dressed in women's clothes nor do I ever have the desire too 🙂. I did play with dolls when I was little, lol! I identify now as masc. When I was a kid and realized I was gay, I felt like I had to try harder to be masc so as not to be outed before I was ready. I do always offer to pay on a date too 🤑! One thing I really REALLY struggled with is wondering if it would have been easier as a gay white man instead of a black man. In alot of ways I still feel that way, but do realize the beauty in my own culture and there are many who embraces it. One thing I wish could change about gay culture is friendships with the same sex not based on attraction. Either that "supposedly" new friend eventually wants to hookup, or if he's not into you or knows you don't want to go there and remain friends...he's done with you. For the most part all my friends are straight people, or females. I wish I knew how to have more gay friends to just do normal stuff with (concert, jogging, sports, happy hour, travel, etc) without a hookup or dating element attached to it.

Thank you Sam, as always, for sharing! Much much easier to come out in this day and age than back ,e.g., in the late 1960s and 1970s, when I was in my 20s. To come out openly back then was very very dangerous! We were forced to live a double life for survival! Everything from physical harm to car tires being slashed to being fired from your job to public humiliation and vicious gossip, and so on. I came out to more long time straight friends and relatives this past year than I did all the years since I was born put together. Even Gay lexicon has changed. The word "boyfriend" was not used back then; the word used was "lover", and most couples were not monogamous, which annoyed me to no end. I always wanted 1 monogamous person. As horrific and scary the AIDS epidemic was, there was 1 silver lining. It forced our community to be more monogamous when having a relationship.

Thanks for making this video. You and Mom ae adorable and look like you have an open and loving relationship. I'm much older 62,and although I went to my first Gay Bar at 19,and met someone. i didn't really start to slowly come out until 1988,when I was 28. I did move far away, across the country to San Diego. I eventually told my brother's and sisters, my mother had died when I was 17. I never told my father as he was an alcoholic and not very nice.
