The father of a 15-year-old who went missing for about a week in Monterey Park - before she was found safe outside ABC7's office - was arrested on suspicion of child abduction.
The girl's mother said she's been estranged from the father for more than a year and that he drove a wedge between her and her daughter. READ MORE: abc7.com/post/...

I agree. Everyone in these comments has decided to demonize either the mom or the dad.... but I think we need to remember that this poor young girl has had the relationship with both of her parents irreversibly damaged. My mom and dad divorced when I was quite young. But other than saying the other wasn't a good husband/wife to them, they never spoke badly of eachother to us. My mom took care of my brother and I primarily, and she always encouraged a relationship with my dad. It IS possible to divorce the other parent and not talk horribly about the other parent.

The mom might not reveal the real reason for sending Allison to the mental institute to protect her privacy. While some speculate it’s to silence her, remember that many girls this age self-harm, and the mom can’t watch over her 24/7. You missed a few things, so mom & grandpa were the ones that (SA) the daughter. Alison reported it to one of the doctors, the doctor called MPK police department to report SA, CPS was also notified. The mother and Alison's lawyer were in cahoots, claiming Alison's statement was made up and the dad had groomed her to make such statements so Alison can live with the dad. The mom basically wanted to contradict Alison's SA statement, saying she was mentally unstable and need to be admitted into a mental institute. Alison told her lawyer she wanted to live with the dad, but somehow the mom got awarded full custody?!?! EVEN though she hasn't been in Alison's life in over a year? The father stated he never wanted to admit her into a mental institute, but rather an out-of patient therapy? What I don't get is the dad is a retired Marine who served for our country, the mom on the other hand has a felony assault record of her assaulting her ex husband (there's a picture of his face all swollen and beaten) and there were couple of instances the mom punches Alison in the chest or arms for no reason. One example is Alison didn't want to play the game her mom wanted, so the mother throws a huge tantrum and calls her a "ungrateful brat". The ONLY REASON the mother (Annie Chao) has been getting away with things is cause her family has ties with MPK police & city council.

There's a video on KZbin of an encounter between Alison and Monterey Park PD, apparently recorded by Alison the day before she was reported missing, in which she's crying to MPPD about how she doesn't want to go back to her mother because the mother is being abusive. Alison didn't sound like she was coached by her father or anyone else. She sounded genuine. What's more, the mother sounds like a controlling and somewhat vindictive person, who gaslights and becomes emotionally abusive toward anyone who gets fed up by her overbearing nature. So, while we don't know if Alison's abuse claims are true, they certainly are believable. Under these circumstances, a better solution is to award custody to the father instead of arresting him...

If your daughter was 5 I’d believe you, she is 15, what coached???? If you were a decent and good mother no amount of “coaching” would get your daughter to not even be with you, she might resent you but at least she would still want be around you. I don’t believe her at all!! If you loved your daughter like you said you did you’d allow her to just live with her dad and maybe in the future you would have been able to get close and repair your relationship with her but now you’ve damaged it indefinitely, no decent mother would dream of putting their child in a mental institution unless they were a immediate threat to themselves or someone else. You should be ashamed of yourself not sit there and compose statements to the media.

You bet! I used to work in the mental health facility, thank God I found something better and ran! It’s very toxic and even the clients get worse than better. People sign up for mental health to get medical and SSI. That’s the mom’s plan. Using the system while still keep her assets. I had clients coming in screaming at people saying that the system fck her up, that she was fine but was forced to enter the system out of her own will and now it’s in her record and she’s doomed for life.

So this is what having money and a good lawyer gets you. Your daughter doesn’t want to stay with you? Just say that she’s mentally unstable and that she can’t choose for herself. Even when your daughter cries and says that you abused her, just say that her dad coached her to say it. Yeah the system is fucked.

You really are just shooting at the messenger here. The reporting is based on police investigation and possible charges. If true, the father’s family chose a very poor way to handle this situation. And it’s not going to help Alison’s case at all no matter what the truth of the situation is. It has only added to the mess.

The presentation seemed quite balanced to me though. The new information was presented factually, then both parties’ sides of the situation were presented, the father/aunt at the earlier news conference and the mother’s written statement. The reporting did not push any particular angle except to portray the situation as a messy divorce, which seems objectively true. Media literacy.

abc7 has betrayed Alison Chao when wanted you guys to hear her side of the story personally without being diluted and misguided by her mom. Her mother's family has enough money and influence to change the narrative of this story. Everyone is neglecting what Alison wants and her own agency. There's nothing left for her mom when it comes to winning this custody battle. Alison will forever hate her mom and her mom's family. If she has to go back to living with her, she'll either have to ride it out to the age of 18 or become suicidal or runaway again.
