A lot of people don't quite get this movie. It's not a horror movie per se, it's a dark comedy. Thus the abrupt ending with the upbeat tune. Also, you didn't seem to grasp that the original werewolf was killed by the villagers when David & Jack were attacked. That's who the dead naked guy was.
@flintarizaga1433

John Landis ( the director) was once told by another filmmaker that "When the monster is dead the movie is over". That's why the ending is so abrupt.

I wouldn’t exactly call this a “B Film”, considering the composer was Elmer “The Ten Commandments/To Kill A Mockingbird” Bernstein, the makeup FX were by the legendary Rick Baker, who’d done Star Wars and The Exorcist. The first wolf transformation took months to plan and a week to shoot. Also, the budget was $10 million, which was substantial for 1981, and they staged that colossal scene of carnage and chaos in Piccadilly Circus, London.
@suzanneprock7286

I remember when this first came out, noone could believe how realistic the transformation was from man to wolf. John Landis did such an amazing job, Michael Jackson called him to work on his thriller video, he wanted to change into a werewolf after seeing this.

Which is why you hear one of the characters in the movie Michael Jackson and Ola Ray are watching at the beginning of his "Thriller" video say "See you next Wednesday" because that is the name of the movie advertised on the poster outside the theater when David transforms for the second time. FYI: Special Effects wizard Rick Baker handled he Werewolf transformations in the and the first THE HOWLING movie (1981) which is a classic unlike its sequels.

I like movies that end like this. It tells you a story. The moment that story is over, the movie ends. Early on we're told that David must die to end the curse. He dies, the curse ends, and so does the movie.
@jjkhawaiian

The story is about David and its simplicity. He travels around Europe with Jack. Jack is killed by the East Proctor werewolf and David is scratched, later becoming the last remaining werewolf. He falls in love with Alex. Then, gets shot and dies. End of story. The background of the village is subtle but all the clues are there if you think about it. Movies in the 70s-80s weren't always wrapped up explaining everything, like today's movies. I feel if you give enough clues to the audience, they'll pick up on things. Sometimes, the endings were ambiguous and were left to the audience to come up with their own resolution. Having everything spelled out is boring, cliche, and lazy. What more could you have learned about knowing the total background of the village and villagers of East Proctor?

The big thing to remember about this movie is that the s was way before CGI; these were all practical effects (prosthetics, make up, etc). This was cutting edge and mind blowing at the time. Werewolf movies seem hard to get right, but I'd suggest Wolfen, the OG Wolfman (with Lon Cheney) and maybe Underworld: Evolution or Rise of the Lycans.

That was the movie's writer/director, John Landis, who got knocked through the plate glass window by the car during the Piccadilly Circus car crash mayhem. He used to be a stuntman, himself, and said that his stunt crew challenged him to perform a single stunt for the movie. So....

"A naked American man stole my balloons." 😂 You can't take this movie seriously. 😂 Fun Fact: Mr. Collins is the one and only Frank Oz. Not only is he an actor and director, but is also the voice actor. Best known as the voice of Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, and Yoda. Director Cameo Fact: John Landis appears briefly near the end of the film. He is the bearded man who gets hit by a car and thrown through the plate glass window in Piccadilly Circus. Practical Make-up Fact: Rick Baker (the winner of the very first Academy Award for Best Make-up that was created the year this movie came out) claimed to have been disappointed by the amount of time spent shooting the face changing shot for the transformation after having spent months working on the mechanism. John Landis only required one take lasting about seven seconds. Baker felt he had wasted his time until seeing the film with an audience that applauded during that one seven second shot.

Hes not just "the voice of" those Muppets, hes the performer. When people say "hes the voice of...." it shortchanges what he really does.... that hes under the set, wearing like 50 lbs of equipment, manipulating a puppet, doing the voice but also putting acting with his whole body, reading dialogue and addlibbing lines... making the character come alive.

Did you notice all the songs in the soundtrack featured the word "moon" in them? I love the contrasts of the opening of the movie where you have a long, drawn out shot of the truck and the irony of the sheep with David and Jack together. The song is slow paced and relaxing. Then we get the ABRUPT ending with the credits going up as a fast paced, chaotic song plays out. Brilliant!

This one was a favorite of my late wife. I had an Auntie who acted in films and TV programs, and among those was a title where she portrayed an heiress who dreams @ night during the full moon of becoming a monster and possesses combined elements of werewolf/vampire/Mr Hyde characters whereby murders occur which she's convinced of committing and later on hopes somebody will do-her-in to prevent any further deaths, so I was reminded to a good extent when viewing here of the close connection.

"A werewolf can only be killed by someone who loves him." The people at "The Slaughtered Lamb" are doing their best to cover-up what happened. Why? Yet, we know they killed the other werewolf. (The one who killed Jack.) The one who would have killed David, but the people from the pub killed that werewolf before he could finish killing David. How did they do that? They love him. They loved the man who had become the first werewolf. He was one of their own. He had been a child of that small village. This is just speculation, but I imagine that the first werewolf might have been the bar-matron-lady's son. Whoever he was, the villagers had loved him as one of their own. That is why they are trying to keep everything he did a secret. (Protect his mother, perhaps?) The bar-matron-lady is trying to keep the secret, too. She is very cold toward Jack and David... at first. But when Jack and David leave, she softens. She says: "You can't let them go." She feels guilt and compassion. (That's why I think the first werewolf might be her son.) Again, the only way they are able to kill the first werewolf is because they love him. The villagers see that she is right. They all go and save David in the nick of time. But, because he survived, David is now the remaining werewolf, as Jack explained to him. David doesn't have the courage to take his own life. We see that in the scene in the phone booth. He knows that he should, but he just can't. When Nurse Alex chases him down the alley, she finally tells him that she loves him. (He had said it to her, before, but this was the first time she had said it to him.) We see a moment of realization in the werewolf's eyes. Then, he leaps forward. NOT to attack Alex! He leaps into a hail of bullets. It is intentional. Alex telling him that she loves him gives David the courage he needs to jump into the gunfire he knows will come. Our love story ends in a tragedy of self sacrifice. Nurse Alex is devastated. Roll credits!! (I love this movie.)

AMIL is one of my favorite films of all times but its strenght is also its flaws in that it simplicity and naivité gave it its power but it also limits it. I read the script and I was disappointed there wasn't much more to it. When you read a script, you always find elements that wasn't in the movie but this was filmed as such. So it's a very short script. When I saw it the first time, I was pissed cause just when the movie got interesting, it went right into the classic godzilla moment where we have to kill the monster and the movie ends. As if the filmmakers were too exausted and rushed it. Like she said, I would have wanted to know more about the Slaughtered Lamb and all the secrets it held. The mythology that lead to that moment. (then again some might say the mystery of that place gave it its power). If they have added maybe 30 minutes more of this movie, it would have been a masterpiece in the Jaws class. But as it is, it ended being just a cool monster movie(one of the best of its kind).

What is there left to explain. The residents who live in that town where the slaughtered lamb is located. They’ve known about this curse for many, many years. Even they don’t know why or how things came to be the way they are. They’ve simply managed to keep it isolated in their town & still keep it a secret after all those years. That’s why all the residents of town were at the pub, the Slaughtered lamb the night of the full moon. They were there for protection. They obviously would all meet up there the night of every full moon and wait till morning. Then go back to living their lives, until the next full moon. The pentangle on the wall of the slaughtered lamb was supposedly to ward off werewolves & or evil. That’s why it was on the wall, for protection. You also asked, about the Werewolf that bit David. That Werewolves’s already dead. In the beginning, if you remember to when David and Jack leave the slaughtered lamb and were attacked on the Moors. That Werewolf, kills Jack and the Patrons of the Slaughtered Lamb catch up to David & Jack in time to shoot & kill that werewolf. That’s who the naked man was laying next to David. Remember how that naked man just appeared out of nowhere next to David, bleeding out? That was the towns last werewolf until David was bit. So David ended up becoming the final werewolf.

the original wolf was shot by the villagers, hence the naked man lying next to David. this could be a cultural difference to do with folklore, but the villagers were paranoid about any bad publicity they may have gotten, not wanting any...reporters or tv people disturbing their way of life if they learned the truth. they had lived with this werewolf problem for hundreds of years & had come to accept it, but there was a morbid fear that any foreigners/newcomers might get infected, which is what happened of course, one thing among many things I liked was the contrast between rural countryside England & the hustle bustle of big city London. similar to KING KONG being taken out of his natural environment, into an alien one, I don't see your comparison between EVIL DEAD & WEREWOLF IN LONDON Which has far more layers of story and lacks the claustrophobia of EVIL DEAD

What could _BE_ more definitive and final than that ending? It was perfect. David's dead, so the werewolf's bloodline is severed. The end. This movie was made _BEFORE_ the current trend of draaaagggging out the ending by making the villain come back 2,3,4 or more times, before it finally ends. It's become extremely predictable (and irritating) to me.

The ending is supposed to be like that. This is like a campfire tale. It's just a tragic tale. That's why it's called An American werewolf in London, and not werewolf:the David Naughton story. It's terrible perfect when you think of it that way. It plays with you. Pulls you in with this magnetic story. Then pulls itself away, in true horror ruthlessness, with an abrupt slap back to reality.....BAM!!! Hey!!! Snap out of it!!!! Fck this guy it's a horror Cya later!. Lol fuckin A!

*Just my opinion:* I think the movie ended appropriately. I don't feel showing the aftermath & cleanup would be crucial or add interest to the story. *My Guess on the Village Background:* Small, isolated Villages tend to keep their old traditions. It seems normal to dislike outsiders. Outsiders tend to judge local superstitions and disrupt the status quo. The first werewolf was one of their own to be protected from the rest of the world. The Villagers routine involved leaving the werewolf alone to hunt local wildlife while they stayed safely locked up. *After the attack:* The last thing the Villagers would want is more public attention so they did their best to cover everything up.

😂 let me clarify! I am NO fan of Twilight. Thats just one of the only times I've seen a werewolf. Twilight is not my thing. Separately, I wondered if this would be considered a b movie or not (after reading other comments, I don't believe it is)

I agree w/your assessment of it feeling "disjointed'. It's trying to have comedic elements and horror at the same time that, for me at least, didn't gel right. I HAVE seen "An American Werewolf in Paris" where I think the comedy works better. It's definitely more CGI, though. The effects in THIS movie was groundbreaking at the time. If you want to see a great "werewolf transformation scene" I would suggest "The Howling". No CGI there either.
