when the action figures came out for this movie , the yoda figure was tiny compared to the other 3.75 inch tall figures and so was R2. and the C3PO figure came apart and came with a back pack for Chewie to wear with him in it.

I wonder how 3-PO happened to join them again in the carbon freeze chamber. He was left in Han and Leia's quarters and our heroes were captured. So what happened, they let them go back and pick up their busted-up droid? And made a backpack so Chewie could carry him around? It never really occurred to me before.

Yoda raising the X-wing is my favorite scene in all of Star Wars. Yoda wanted Luke to believe in the Force, believe in his friends, believe in himself. That's why Yoda looked so dejected when Luke gave up. Yoda didn't want to _prove_ that it could be done. He wanted Luke to believe.

I always loved it because even though it is a failure of faith for Luke, it also shows the different perspectives of these two generations. Luke has grown up on this backwater planet and all he really knows as he came of age is this ever-growing darkness of the looming empire, never the world of the Republic and Jedi heroes. They're just myths to him, and even though he wants to be one of them he doesn't REALLY believe in it. I think Yoda realized he needed SOME proof just to believe that world really existed at all.

I hear what you were saying about the opening. It's always there and I believe it's one of the greatest openings in cinema history. A long time ago for a start has a mythical quality to it and then it explodes into that opening. What you were saying about the scrolling though at the beginning, it was influenced by Flash Gordon. George Lucas wanted to direct the Flash Gordon movie, but the studio didn't let him, so instead he did his own Flash Gordon like serial, told in the nine episodes that we now have. Mind you, the opening without credits got George into bother with the Director's Guild. For A New Hope they allowed it, but after he did the same for Empire, which he had to do, he was fined and was even threatened with having the movie removed from cinemas. Lucas simply paid all the fines himself, but it was something he shouldn't have had to do. Cudos to him for staying with his vision.

47:38, funny story Chewbacca is based upon George Lucas's Alaskan Malamute Indiana. When Lucas would drive around picking out spots for filming locations, Indiana always sat up front in the car with him like a furry copilot. So when he was writing Star Wars he gave Han Solo a furry copilot. Lastly, when Lucas and Spielberg were making Raiders of the Lost Ark they named the hero Indiana Jones in honor of his pup. There is even a joke in the Indiana Jones series in which the main character's father reminds him that Indiana was their dogs name.

Seeing Star Wars as a 10 year old, back in 1977, I just kind of inherently understood what they were doing with the screen wipes & title crawls. Of course, people my parent’s age had grown up with those Saturday movie serials & us kids had seen them on Saturday/Sunday afternoon TV, so we just got it. The time Luke spent on Dagobah is hotly debated, but thought to be at least a month and maybe six. The Falcon had to reach Bespin without going to light speed and it was barely in range of their sublight engines - that would have taken a while. The possibility of time dilation has also been suggested, so it's a mystery how much time Luke experienced with Yoda.

Now, Amanda has reacted to Empire Strikes Back. People were surprised about the "secret" of Darth Vader being Luke's father. Prior to release in 1980, Lucas and other executives had Mark Hamill aka Luke and David Prowse (body for Darth Vader) plus James Earl Jones (voice of Darth later) signed Non-Disclosure Agreement or NDA after they completed the scene or faced lawsuits. During the premier of the ESB in 1980, everyone in the audience including Carrie Fisher (Leia) and Harrison Ford (Han Solo) were surprised of the revealing the "secret" Harrison asked Mark, "Hey kid!" "why didn't you tell me?!"

I’m so glad you just remain there silent at any question that resembles any sense of a spoiler. Bravo. Thanks for letting your friend have a genuine reaction to it like you hopefully did. “A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defense, never for attack.” It’s always interesting looking heavily at the philosophy behind it rather than what’s actually said on screen, because Lucas is great at disguising deeper meaning. Ever noticed who attacked first in the cave and on Cloud City? While it’s at heart a movie for kids, we adults can find even deeper meaning in these movies, and I encourage you to continue looking for something hidden between the lines as you do :) May the Force be with you always :)

I just realized who the actor is that is playing the command center commander. That's the grumpy American who came to stay at Fawlty Towers. Remember? He wanted a Waldorf salad and a screw driver. Actor Bruce Boa. "I want you to go in there and BUST HIS ASS!" "Im sorry, bust his what?" "HIS ASS!" "Oh, right! That!"

The decision to have the "other hope" and how they were connected was made during the making of this movie, but who it ended up being was changed during the making of the next film. Hope that made sense, tried to make it as spoiler free as possible.

Amanda wants to know the back story of the Prequels so you should ask her if she wants to watch them before Return of the Jedi and let her decide. Explain that although she will understand everything just fine if she watches RotJ next, and then watches 1-3, it's possible she might enjoy RotJ even better if she watches 1-3 first with all that context. Plus George Lucas made some big changes at the end of RotJ to better fit with the Prequels, which means that if a new fan watches them first, then RotJ hits much better as the grand finale of the first 6 movies.

The bacta tank is a healing chamber. Also, Vader is the Emperor's enforcer. After leaving the theater, my folks & I debated who "the other" is! On one hand, Han turned on the Lightsaber. On the other, Leia heard Luke. We were convinced it would be one of them; & went to see the next movie still assuming it was one of them. By the way, Han's scripted line saying goodbye to Leia was: "I love you, too;" but the actor didn't think Han would say that, so changed the line. The director liked it & kept it. I think I've heard that Lucas liked the change, as well.

In regard to Leia's feelings for Han, there are two things to keep in mind: A) The mention of their encountering a bounty hunter on Ord Mantell indicts an appreciable amount of time has passed between Episodes IV and V. B) The travel time needed at sunlight speed from the star destroyer to Bespin. As another has said, this may have been a month or more. Although shipboard, time-dilation may have seemed much less for those on the Millennium Falcon. Poor Boba Fett trailing in the Slave 1 would have had to stay until absolutely certain they were going to Bespin/Cloud City before he could jump away to get Vader & still get back ahead of them.

I just subscribed! Sorry that I don't remember your names, but some suggested replies when "Marine Mom" asks a question are, 'hmm', 'could be', 'mmm', 'interesting question', and maybe 'I also wondered that.' lol I llove how relaxed and conversational you guys are after the move! I'd love to see "Marine Mom" especially bring a little bit more of that fun into the actual reaction. I'm going to guess that it must be more difficult when you are used to doing reactions where both of you get to bounce off of each other more. You were so lucky to have found out that Darth Vader was telling the truth so quickly! We had to wait for three years before the next movie came out! I'm so happy to have found you two!

It's hard to believe there are still people who are surprised by the "I am your father" line. I'm surprised no one has mentioned it yet, but I looked through the comments and I didn't see anything, but when Leia says "I love you" to Han and he responds "I know", the original script called for him to say something like "I love you too", but Harrison Ford thought that that didn't sound like Han, so he suggested the script change to George Lucas. The advantage you guys have over those of us who saw these movies in the theater is, you don't have to wait another three years now to see the next one.

And to think if they had made C3PO a higher priority and fixed him right away instead going off for dinner C3PO would have warned them about the stormtroopers. Remember C3PO saw them and said that he must go tell the others and then realizes he was shot. It is later shown that C3PO would have told them right way by when Chewie starts putting him back together while in the cell and he briefly comes to life and one of the first things he says is "Stormtroopers! Here? I must tell the others." before Chewie disconnects him to work on him some more. So if they had fixed him right away they would have been warned that the Empire was there. But, no, they just left him in a heap and went to eat. But, on the other hand, then we wouldn't have had that great portion of the movie.

One thing that helps to know about time, it’s not a constant everywhere in the universe. Gravity affects the rate at which time passes. If I got on a ship, travelled to a planet in a stronger, or weaker gravity environment, time would move differently for me than you. It might move slower for me, and faster for you here on Earth, if I went to a planet in a higher gravity environment, say a planet orbiting a massive star many hundreds of times the mass of Sol, or even a neutron star or black hole, or a star that’s in a close cluster of other stars with a higher gravitational environment. The opposite would happen if that planet were to be in lower gravity, say orbiting a dwarf star in a void where there aren’t many other stars around, and the gravitational environment is quite weak. Dagobah may have been in a lower gravitational environment, and Luke would have experienced the passage of time faster than Han and Leia who were in open space until reaching the Bespin system. Also, the Falcon was limited in propulsion without a functional hyperdrive, so the trip from Hoth to Bespin could have taken a month or two at high sublight drive.

"Star Wars" was released in 1977. Lucas reworked the original trilogy in 1997, adding some CGI and additional scenes; he pronounced them as the definitive versions.

When George Lucas first conceived of the idea of "The Star Wars," what he had in mind was a trilogy of trilogies. When he got funding for the first movie, there was no guarantee any other movie would made, so he decided to start with the middle trilogy. No one other than George knew this at the time. When the first movie was released in 1977, it was simply called "Star Wars" without any indication of possible future movies. It wasn't until after The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983) had their initial theater runs and the prequel was green-lit that the first movie was renamed "Star Wars: A New Hope" and the original three movies were labeled episodes 4, 5 and 6. It was a real surprise to fans at the time.

It’s been three years since Luke blew up the Deathstar. Han was in love with Leia. He stayed with the rebellion for her. How ever she feels for Han, Leia is too stubborn to admit it. Han will ill tease her relentlessly over it. Han knows his boundaries and what he can get away with. The bounty Hunter Han mentioned in the beginning of the movie was proof enough it was time to leave. If his staying with the rebellion would put Leia at risk. If only she was honest with herself a thousand bounty hunters wouldn’t keep Han away. Han knows Leia loves him, and Han has been proving his for three years.

16:23 I always thought of it more like a kind of dialysis chamber. Since you have seen more of these movies, you know how badly mutilated Vader is. That suit isn't just armor, it is also a composite of all his prosthetics, including his mobile respirator. It is like a physical illustration of all the things Vader had to sacrifice to accomplish his life long dreams. Including things about himself. 😢 BTW, this secene also illustrates an imortant lesson in Business Management; Promote people arbitrarily, and you end up wanting to choke them! 😒

12:53 do you see that sticker on the left side of the door? it's a leftover from a cut scene. in the original scene, the few wampa (snow monsters) attacked the base, they were barely able to defeat them, the rest were tricked into the room and the door was closed on them, and a sticker was placed on the door with the inscription: do not open it!

I was 13 years old in 1977 when I saw the original Star Wars. I was 16 Years old in 1980 when I saw The Empire Strikes Back in the Movie Theatre. Everyone in the Theatre was shocked when Darth Vader told Luke who he was, The Scene with Leia telling Han she loved him was supposed to have Han say He loved her also.. After several Takes Harrison Ford just said I know. He explained that he felt like that would be a Han thing to do and George Lucas agreed. He allowed the Actors to adlib from Time to time.

Between this film and the last, Mark Hammill was in a car accident and suffered injuries to his face. I think the attack by the creature and Luke's subsequent injuries were meant to explain the noticeable changes in his appearance. I wonder if the cuts seen on his face correspond to his actual injuries.

Chewie is based upon George Lucas' dog, Indiana. Indiana's name was then given to Indiana Smith, a new Lucas character. Steven Spielberg was brought on to direct the Indiana Smith movie - from a script called "Raiders of the Lost Ark". Spielberg didn't like the last name Smith, and asked to change the name to Jones - and Indiana Jones was born.
