My mom won’t let me do anything, I’m 15 and I cant dye my hair, i can’t cut it, I can’t get a nose piercing. She always tells me that it’s HER body 😭 that this is her nose and her hair. And i literally stand there thinking “wtf..” like I can’t even express myself or feel like a 15 year old teenage girl. I feel stuck in this 12 year old self of me. And my body is pretty mature so even tho I’m a child I don’t show it off but I wear clothes that suit my body, and she literally wants me to wear the baggiest child clothes like 🧍🏻‍♀️and gets MAD AT ME WHEN I DONT

@@pizza_slice6916 i'm so sorry to hear that! yeah, my mom used to be pretty controlling too, and it took way too many heated arguments for her to finally understand that i never was, and never will be her property, that i am my own person, no matter how old i am. and while i understand that most of the time she just tried to protect me from making bad decisions (i admit, purple hair wouldn't have suited me at 16), she just wouldn't understand that making bad decisions is a huge part of growing up and learning to be a responsible adult. i hope one day you get out of this situation and find your independence!

@@pizza_slice6916 I'm 15 too and I'm not allowed to dye my hair and pierce my nose. My mum said I can do it after 18 so I guess that's fine. Personally, for me, dyeing and piercings are stuff I can understand my mum not wanting for me right now... Maybe that's just for me. But if your mum won't let you do it even when you a bit older then I'm really sorry to hear that :( Whishing you all the best!

when I was in 7th grade I wanted to cut my hair (always had waist length, strawberry blonde hair that my mother adored) and I didn't even want it super short or anything, I just wanted it to be about shoulder length so it was more manageable (especially during the heat of the summer) and she screamed at me that i would be "ugly" without my hair, that it was the best thing about me. when I persisted that I desperately wanted a haircut, she grabbed my hair in a rage and chopped it off with the kitchen scissors and said "there's your f*cking haircut!" and some parts were so short I had to literally shave my head after that. cut forward to high school and bc of reasons that should be obvious at this point I'm living with my dad who has ALWAYS embraced me doing whatever I want and what makes me happy. I had probably 200 different hairstyles/colors through high school and it was great to get to express myself. shout out to all the parents that embrace their kids individuality. y'all are the best 🎉

Right? It's teaching kid your body is not yours to decide. It's not for you to decide if you want your hair long or short. Not for you to decide if you want to hug this stinky old aunt that chokes you. Then it's a shock kid knows it's not for them to decide what happens in their pants.

When I told my mum I wanted it cut chin length she was incredibly supportive (mostly because I couldn't keep up with brushing it and since my hair is so thick it would get tangled too often for me to bother) and she was actually the one who cut it for me, and gave me the undercut I was wanting as well. I wasn't allowed to choose anything on my own growing up, whether it was clothes or hairstyle or anything else. Now that I'm a mother, when my children show genuine interest in something I do everything I can to support and encourage them. My daughter wanted her hair cut above her shoulders and also asked for bangs/fringe so I had her think about it for a few days to be sure it was what she wanted, then we got it cut like she wanted. My youngest son wanted a mohawk and I did the same thing: gave him time to think about it and make sure that's what he wanted and then got it done for him. I'm the same way with things they're interested in like art, animals, video games, building, singing and/or dancing, etc. I was never supported in my interests while growing up and I refuse to be that sort of parent to my children. 🤘🏻❤️‍🔥

I'm surprised that I've actually had the exact opposite experience from most of these comments, my mom likes her hair shorter, but as a kid I always wanted to grow my hair out as long as humanly possible. My mom would take me to the hairdresser to get it cut to "keep the ends healthy" but they would always cut off way more than they needed to and I would cry myself to sleep for a week because I could never get my hair past my sternum. The last straw was when I was 18 and asked the hairdresser to keep my hair long and she cut 6 inches off because my mom said "take as much as you need" "no shorter than that" the entire appointment and the hairdresser is a family friend. She's fought me tooth and nail every step of the way, saying it's "distractingly long" and it's "unhealthy" despite the fact that it's still growing rapidly and it's healthier than its ever been nearly at my elbows. It makes me so happy to finally be able to stand up to her and not let her cut my hair. Good job to you for doing what makes you happy!

my mother did the same to me. in our culture it’s seen as a symbol of beauty to have long, thick hair and so when i wanted a hair cut she would always cry and tell me i can’t cut my hair or i won’t be pretty anymore. finally right before covid hit i chopped all of my hair off and only had two inches left, that’s when the weight (literally) lifted off my shoulders. my mother was very upset, but i was 20, i was an adult capable of making my own decisions

It’s the opposite in my situation… growing up I’ve always wanted long hair but every time my hair length touched my shoulders, it got chopped off above my chin. I always cried when my mom took me to hair salon cause I knew what it’s gonna happen. The reason why my mom did this is because she said she could save more time not having to take care of my hair: shampooing, drying and styling it when I was too young to do it all by myself. While looking back now that I’m grown, it’s understandable, but still makes me a bit sad thinking of it.

Some mother's, especially when they're in their 40s , get jealous of their own daughters . I know it may sound weird but they think of it "now I'm old and my daughter is still and pretty little lady " . It's may be a phase or more and u shouldn't hate or be mad at her , just compliment her and make her more confident and I assure u it'll work

A narcissistic mother may perceive her daughter as a threat. When a mother envies and then criticizes and devalues her daughter, she diminishes the threat to her own fragile self-esteem. As a daughter analyzes what her mother appears to be jealous about, she comes to feel unworthy. They can be competitive with the child, ignore the child's needs, become jealous and angry when the child innocently outshines the parent, and treat you well in public and around others but revert back to the insensitive, cruel narcissist behind closed doors That's from google btw

I cut my hair behind my moms back last April, and she was devastated. We got it fixed at the hair salon and I thought it looked beautiful. It was above shoulders length, and it really suited me. It’s brown a lot now and it’s past shoulders length, when it gets longer I will cut it again. I feel as though parents should let their children express themselves through their hair and let them do what they want with it, give them a little more freedom.

My mum was diagnosed with lung cancer over a year ago now, she's always love her hair. Whether it was super long and thick, shoulder length and light. Red, brown, black or blonde highlights but she never let her hair go past the shoulder when cutting it. When she started treatment she decided to cut her hair b4 because she couldn't bare to lose it slowly. Watching her cry as it was shaved was one of the hardest thing I've ever had to witness live and i wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. Seeing this reminded me of that pain. As long as your daughter is happy there is no need to feel despair, appreciate the time u have and remember most of us come back around and brace the ways of our younger self 😂

It really made me smile through the darkness.

My mother reacted similar but instead of showing sadness she expressed anger. All my life I had long thick really curly hair and people would always compare me to Disney characters like Moana. It’s as if my hair became my identity and it became the center of my beauty. During the pandemic (2020) I thought it was time for a change and to learn how to love myself without hiding behind the hair. I shaved it all off. She was pissed. But she couldn’t really force me to do anything because I was already 18. Fast forward to today and I just chopped it all off AGAIN. In between the time of 2020 until recently i experimented and died my hair all sorts of colors so it was very damaged. I decided it was time to grow my hair back long and healthy so here I am now…growing my hair back knowing that I’m also beautiful bald 😭 lol

I had hip length hair until I was over 9. Then, just a few months before my 10th birthday, I cut it to mid length. I thought THAT was short. I didn’t like how heavy it was getting and how hard it was to style/brush. Then January this year, I cut it to slightly under my shoulders. I’ve never been prettier. Sure, everything else is ugly, but my hair has never been prettier and it honestly makes my everything else look prettier too. I went from the shy, awkward kid to the funny, unhinged kid because people actually approached me to know my true personality. And now, I have so much more confidence, and don’t have to worry about people judging me. If my parents never let me cut my hair, I don’t know where I’d be now. I agree with this so much. My mom cries these past few weeks cause I'm moving out from my parents house now, I'm 22 and I've got a mind of my own now, I've matured, not fully but developed some. Mom makes it seem like she hated the new school that I am moving to, but in reality she doesn't want me to be so far away from them. Only 5 hours apart, same country, but now I understand all mom's don't want to be separated with their babies. I even promised mom that I'll go to a very good Law School after College of Business. But eventually I realized... that wasn't her point... 🥰

I cried when my mum forced me to have my hair cut. The hairdresser got emotional too. It was past the small of my back and she had them cut it to my ear lobes, because she was tired of finding loose hair strands on the floor. I was devastated. This was 17 years ago, but I’ll never forget it. 😔

Hair is omnipresent, but that's no excuse to do that to anyone. My mother did the same thing without even the excuse. She got what she wanted and I got to cry over the stupid attempt to put my curly hair into a bob. Bobs only look good on at least mostly straight hair. I wear my hair in long layers by preference.

Same. I had agreed on a couple of inches before going to the salon, and once there, my Mom then instructed what was basically a bob. I hated it so much that even though the hair stylist did her best to style, I just pulled it all up so it's hidden in my baseball cap. I still hate that my "mother" did that to me.

My uncle passed from suicide about 20 years ago. Little did he know, his girlfriend was pregnant with a child. She gave birth to a beautiful girl, in 2004. My uncles hair was a light blonde and so was the little girls, and recently she dyed it red which broke her moms heart because it reminded her of her love ❤️ (Yes, they are still part of our family) ❤️

At 28, my mom was so mad at me for shaving my head (something I had wanted to do since I was 15) that she didn't talk to me for months. Afterwards, she couldn't look at me without grimacing. We don't talk now and I'm happier because of it. 😊❤ It's scary for a mother when their kids become their own person.....but it's okay. One of my sons likes having a shaved head, the other likes having "poofy" hair. 😅

sorry for my english this is not my first language. my mom always told me, "this is my hair. because I've been working on them. you have no right to cut them off." as if my body doesn't belong to me. like I'm a thing, like I'm her property. at the age of 18, I came home with a square haircut. I've never been happier about my appearance than I was that day. now I have long hair, but this is completely my decision, and now, after years of psychotherapy after my mother's bullying, I can freely treat my body the way I want.
