Thank you for showcasing a bit of Mombasa. There is more to Coastal Kenya than Mombasa. Award-winning Diani Beach, Watamu, Kilifi, Malindi, Lamu with the beautiful Shela island that can be easily confused for Santorini in Greece. Coastal and all of Kenya is worth visiting.

Hope this message finds you doing well. Thinking about coming to the coast to bring in the new year. What hotels, airbnb would you recommend to really enjoy the coastal experience? Want to experience beautiful sunsets, with nothing but white sand crystal blue waters. Would be great to find a place where I can usher in the new year in a lively atmosphere. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

@Tayo Aina, you said "Arab, Indian, and colonial European heritage" This eliminates the Swahili civilization's agency, which is the city's founding civilization. Taking away this agency erases its Blackness. I think that should have been phrased better. Other than that, I love that you love East Africa and you keep coming back.
@shuaibaslam62472 жыл бұрын
Let me educate you about 'SWAHILI' and swahili culture. Swahili is coming from an arabic word meaning coast or coastal people. Swahili culture is a blend of bantu, arabic and indian culture blended together because mombasa is a melting pot of cultures. Swahili language is a mixture of bantu, and heavy loanwords from arabic indian and a little portuguese. So you cannot mention mombasa and swahili by eliminating its arab, asian and portuguese heritage. I myself being born and live in mombasa i am a 6th generation indian with mixed bantu heritage. I hope you understand now
@davidmukka59772 жыл бұрын
It's not a secret that the African origins and African agency of the coastal people who later came to be known as the Swahili people was distorted to fit colonial narratives. It was African first before anything else

I'm half-Kenyan, we went when I was 4, it's one of my oldest memories now at the age of 26. We were meant to go back on a "heritage trip" in Dec. 2020 when my older sister finished med-school and I had finished my undergrad. Life had other plans, but my Dad and I are planning to go this December (2022). I've been able to fo a lot of international travel since I began college, and just got back from London last week (28/10/2022) as my second solo trip and eighth country - we are planning to go to Mombasa on this trip and I cannot wait. Please pray round trip tickets stay under $2,100 come 15 Nov. 2022, that's when we are going to book flights and that's our per person limit.

As a Kenyan.. a bit of history.. Mombasa and 3 mile strip of coast from Kenya into Tanzania was not part of Kenya till independence but was part of region ruled by sultan rulers based in Zanzibar. The ruler made a deal to cede the strip to UK king George V in exchange for recognizing the culture religion and people who inhabit the region. It was incorporated into Republic of Kenya in 1964.
@esem1352 жыл бұрын
Mombasa was actually inhabited by Bantus (Miji Kendas) before the arrival of Arabs, Persians, Portuguese, British etc. There were many battles for ownership which changed hands until the British arrived. At some point the ownership fell into the hands of the Omanis who also ruled Zanzibar. So as much the Sultan of Zanzibar ruled Mombasa at some point, they were completely separate territories and were never one and the same, just the same Sultan. Infact, some quotas claim Zanzibar was to be part of Kenya.

@@esem135 Mombasa was not inhabited by mijikenda stop lies. Mijikenda came 700 years ago from Congo. The swahilis people were the first bantus to settle at the coast . Then at that time the swahilis were known as Wangozi. The name swahili were given by the Arab traveler Mohammed ibn Batuta. When he went back to Morocco he explained to the king what he saw at the coast and he called the wangozi as civilized Ahlul swahil. Mean people of the coast. Visit lamu ,Gede ,Faza islands you will see ruins of building built more than 1000 years . There is a mosque in Taqwa which was built 1400 years. ago by the swahilis. Secondly, the swahilis were trading with the Arabs since 4th century. All you know about the Arabs is Omanis came to fight the Portuguese . Infacts the arabs have been at the coast before mijikenda.
