I arrive in Mombasa, Kenya's second largest city. I spend some time walking alone through the historic old town, famous for its trading history. I finish off by eating a Swahili biriyani and visiting a beach.

I'm Jason, a full-time British Travel Vlogger and KZbinr who's been to 52 countries. I've been travelling around the world full-time since 2017. So far, my trips have taken me to Asia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East and the Americas.
I have travel series' from many of the world's best (and least) known travel destinations. I filmed the first vlogs on my channel in the summer of 2016 after spending a year living in China. A proper solo trip around Eastern Europe followed after graduating from University in the summer of 2017, taking me to Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Kosovo. This trip marked the start of my efforts to make a KZbin full-time job.
After that European trip I went heavily into exploring Asia, visiting India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Pakistan, the Philippines, South Korea and Kazakhstan (seeing me cover a lot of Far East and Southeast Asia in particular).
I have also travelled to North Africa and the Middle East fairly extensively over the last five years, filming videos in Turkey, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq, Jordan, Israel and Palestine.
To date, I have not yet been to Australasia or South America. Though I am hoping to visit the latter sometime in 2022, along with a first stop in the Caribbean.
I've travelled to North America just once as a KZbinr, visiting Mexico in 2021. Though I have been to both the USA and Canada, this was only as a child on family holidays.
I have just begun my first trip to Sub Saharan Africa in 2022, starting in Kenya.

Thank you very, very much for this film. 1. I don't know English very well, you speak very clearly and very slowly and that's why I understand almost everything 2. I've been to Mombasa, but I haven't seen it 3. I'll be there this year and I'll try to see these places 4. Beautiful film shows the old city of Mombasa and the interesting corners of this wonderful city. 5. So far Thailand and bangkok in my heart 1st place, but now Kenya and people are so friendly towards other nationalities.6. I have not found so much cordiality in any other country 7. My dream is to live here permanently 🌹🌹🌹👌🌹

The British also loved the Kenyan Highlands which were referred to as the "white highlands". Very lush and cool areas of Kenya. Some South African Boers also settled in those highlands in Kenya. Kenya's history is very rich and quite painful too. Overall, Kenya's natural and diverse beauty cannot go unnoticed, part of the reason everyone wanted a share of Kenya... to date! Numerous battles were fought in Mombasa alone as a trading port by the Arabs, Portuguese, British and the locals, who were mainly Bantu. Kenya has a mix of Bantus, Nilotic and Cushitic people. A Kenyan cannot be defined as having a certain look, as many people think when they see Maasais, Kalenjins (who make the long distance runners) and assume that is what defines Kenyans.

Couldn't ha e said it better. I've had to explain to other Africans, especially West Africans, whenever I visit the place and they're quick to say that I don't look Kenya , just because I am fair skinned...since they think Kenya s are all tall, dark and skinny (based on the long distance athletes that they see on TV 🤦🏽‍♀️).
@reduniverse8912

The most famous Kenyans out there are the Kalenjin community (the long distance runners that are mostly seen on tv) and the Maasai (famous among tourists coming to Kenya). These are just 2 ethnic groups in a country that has way over 40 different tribes.

That's the most whitewashed summary of Kenya I have ever read. The British Rule was long and brutal, resulting in deaths of many, some of it internal which was helped by the divide and rule policies courtesy of King Charles' family. "The British also loved the Kenyan Highlands ....."? Please!

Great video and happy to see you enjoying your tour of Old Town. One point to note is that at 8:43, you mentioned an alley as a departure point for slaves, but that's not true. The road you pointed to is simply a road going down towards the ocean. But interestingly enough, at the end, right at the water is the former Mombasa residence of Queen Elizabeth and the Royal family of Britain. It's currently occupied by the Hinawy family whose grandfather, Sir Mbarak Hinawy was the colonial governor for Mombasa. The road you are walking on is actually Sir Mbarak Hinawy Road. As it relates to Masjid Mandhry, it's believed to be one of the oldest, if not the oldest masjid in Kenya. I don't think non-Muslims are allowed but this isn't something which is definitive in Islam. Numerous well-known masjids such as Sultan Ahmed Masjid in Istanbul, Sultan Qaboos Masjid in Muscat and Sheikh Zayed Masjid in Abu Dhabi all allow non-Muslims for tours. However, they generally will close for touring when the call to prayer is made.

I just came across your channel. Thank you for this video...looking to move to Mombasa from California...just to switch it up a bit...video was insightful to know what to expect. It's true about how locals want to show you around. It was like that when I went to Egypt in 2021. Locals were very friendly, wanted to show you around, take your photo, and even help you with your luggage at the airport and you have to keep saying politely "No, Thank you", which I had to learn quickly to do so. If you don't, you will run out of cash fast due to tipping the locals for their help.

Not true about Non-muslims not being allowed to enter mosques in Mombasa, or anywhere else in the world for that matter. All you have to do is remove your shoes and ask politely to enter and take a look. The only restriction would be to not interrupt any one of the 5 daily prayers, and that too is something anyone can help you with. Great footage of my hometown, where I grew up though, including my favourite childhood hangout, Fort Jesus. I miss Mombasa immensely. Thank you for this!!!
