What settings were used for the window shot? It looks like the exposure was higher for the Moment Log and lower for the Native iPhone compared to the FiLMiC Pro Log. Also was the iPhone shot and HDR image?

Shot with the same settings for each although you can’t set the iPhone camera so we used the same point to exposed with on the dollhouse. No HDR for the native iPhone shot.

Sure. We typically use AirDrop unless it’s HEVC, then we use iTunes file sharing.

Not sure. Might be an encoding issue or frame rate issue. Shooting anything over 24 FPS seems to be buggy right now.

Again a very nice video. I would love to see a video in which you show the true benefit of always using the highest bitrate available as I'm not sure I understand how this ties with the advice to go for 24 fps and low shutter speeds for the cinematic effect (but I'm new to this).

Higher bit rate is all about the quality of the video file regardless of frame rate or shutter speed. Typically the higher the bit rate the less noise and artifacts in an image. We always shoot in the highest bit rate available on our smartphone. Hope that helps. We will talk more about this in future videos, too!

Not that we know of. Have used it before with no problems. Often we use iTunes file sharing or just AirDrop, too (don’t use AirDrop for high frame rates like 4K60 or HD240 though as it will convert it to lower bit rate H.264).

Hi, Great video! Is there a way to record .mp4 files with the moment app? For me it generates .mov files and I have problems editing them on windows 10 using premiere cc 2019. Installed quicktime, but it didn't help. Do you have any solution fof this?

Not that we know of as it’s the iPhone way to encode. We have trouble in premiere with these on a Mac. They stutter.

You can use whatever app you want really. They’ll all function, but for the most control of both camera and gimbal features in one app use Filmic Pro. But to start our the Movi app will work ok.

You can see noise sometimes at any ISO, but typically 100 and over it starts to get more noticeable.

It depends on the situation, but yes. You could more or less say the same thing about mirrorless cameras too today. Not only can you get better dynamic range (with Filmic Pro log), it also just takes the “video edge“ off shooting in flat or log. So if you’re going for a more cinematic look like for say a short film or a music video or a commercial then that’s a good use of it.

Seems that people are now moving away from log and flat and back to natural. The trade offs in getting the dynamic range introduces up to 2+ stops of noise, gives you mushy mids and removes 2 bits of colours from your color palettes resulting in banding and unrecoverable skin tones. Log is meant for 10 bit or Higher devices but iPhones and most dslr cameras are only 8 bit. Thoughts?

Depends on the Log profile. Canon Log was designed for 8 bit and works great. SLog 2 looks awesome on 8 bit Sony mirrorless. Older DSLRs has some issues with banding, especially in sky shots, but that’s not the case today if it’s shot correctly. And LogV2 was designed for 8 bit that acts like 10 bit via computational imaging and it works very well, too. No banding. The main issue is low light shooting regarding smartphones. So it just depends what you’re shooting. For everyday videos we tend to shoot Flat, and for more involved projects - especially high contrast scenes in good light - we shoot LogV2. We’re talking about FiLMiC Pro here as Moment Log doesn’t give you anymore DR, but still can look pretty good when shot right.

Are you using a counterweight? If not, would try that. But watch the overall payload as it’s about 210g if memory serves.

I contacted the support and they said, quote “In it's current iteration it does not provide much of an extended dynamic range, but we are hoping to come out with a better version of it in the future” From their words I understand it does provide extended dynamic range after all, but the improvement is subtle. Do you think that could be the case?

In our testing we have determined that Moment log is more or less an effect, meaning it’s just a filmic look being applied, which in and of itself is fine. It actually looks pretty good. However, you do not get any more dynamic range. None more than the phone already provides. With FiLMiC Pro LogV2 we have found that you can get additional DR especially in the shadows. Up to 2 stops depending on the device.

Hello, very good video! thanks! Can you please do one test with filmic pro 4k vs FHD (1080p) noise grain and overall video quality comparison. I have Samsung Galaxy s9 plus, and I have noticed, that filmic pro is very noisy grainy in 4k especially it's noticeable in low light ofcourse, but I can definitely see more ugly grain even in daylight. It's pretty good for a smartphone in 1080p mode though. I was wondering if it is because of my Samsung smartphone, or this is filmic pro bug. high quality noise reduction is enabled. As I understand 4k should be less grainy, but for me 1080p looks better than 4k, even though 1080p looks softer and is not as crispy as 4k. I am using Log/flat v2. 2) and one more question, after touching white balance manually everything becomes less colorful with the same settings as were in auto mode. why is this happening. do you have such experience with iPhone?

Not sure TBH. Haven’t had that in our experience. We shoot everything in 4K. Now footage can get noisy in low light for sure. And shadows can even in bright light if you’re not careful. But we have not seen any difference between the resolutions and noise levels. It could be that the HD is hiding the noise and you’re seeing it more in the 4K because of the higher resolution. White balance can be a tricky thing. Typically we let it auto white balance and then lock it. That seems to give the best results. Unless you’re in bright sun and you can pick the daylight preset. Yes we have, but not too often. So not sure why that would be happening. We normally let it auto adjust then lock it down and it looks good.

Try Sharing the files from the gallery within the app, this happens with photos. I use File Explorer connected to my mac so within the app I share the photo/video and it does not get processed. If you share from the camera roll it will be converted.

It opens the "camera roll" gallery but in black this is the gallery, from there try to send it, you'll see (at least with pictures) that it's shared in raw format and not jpegs. cheers.

Great video, thanks for sharing. One question around editing workflow which you touched upon. If I wanted to use Lumafusion on my iPad to edit footage shot on my iPhone Xs in either Filmic Pro or Moment, would you recommend using Dropbox or iCloud Drive to transfer those huge 4k 60fps files over? I think you mentioned not to use Airdrop as it downsamples the footage? I want to do this on the road so won't have a Mac to use your iTunes workaround.

AirDrop is not ideal for 4K60 as it converts it and lowers the quality. So either Dropbox or iCloud will work fine, albeit it is a bit slow. You could also get one of those Sandisk sticks that will connect to the Lightning port and allow you to backup and transfer files via USB. Or those Western Digital wireless SSD drives work great and talk to both Filmic Pro and LumaFusion. Really cool way to work and you don’t need a computer to use it. Thanks for watching!

It doesnt even tell you what resolution I'm in. Right now, even the app gets stuck if you turn the phone from horizontal to vertical or back...

Filmic Pro for sure. Moment is not actually a log gamma curve. Plus the FP app is considerably more powerful. However, as we showed you can get some nice looking footage with the Moment app - just not more dynamic range (it is less expensive too).

When shoot in 48 or 60 fps in 4K - the frame rate is poor. 49,47 FPS! 51,7 fps and etc. see you file info. And second problem - my iPhone X extremely hot after 1 min. using the app.

I did some tests back when I had filmic pro and their "LOG" doesn't preserve any more highlight/shadow detail than the normal iphone camera. Both moment and filmic pro's LOG modes are complete gimmicks.

Older devices and software were limited by the camera sensor, but today with computational imaging they’re not as much. Shooting log in 8 bit 4:2:0 is a tricky endeavor to begin with whether you’re talking about smartphones or mirrorless cameras etc... But DR is only part of the story. You’re also getting a softer, less saturated, and more pleasing cinematic image vs. standard REC 709 video (and the in camera sharpening typically added). Not to mention getting 100Mbps bit rate in those log files. So while it’s definitely not like shooting log on an Alexa, it’s not a gimmick either.

Rock solid in our experience. Pretty much never have issues and if there are a simple restart fixes it. Or a clean install is what we recommend for any app really giving you trouble.

Yeah I’m sure when you’re just waiting for the next guy on a bike to ride by but when you’re filming stuff that needs to be captured it’s a fools errand to rely on an app on a phone. Trust me. I’ve been that fool with everyone looking at you going you got that right and having to explain that the garbage app just crashed and lost the great once in a lifetime footage. Not sure what the reinstall is going to do to fix that. But keep hocking this pos app to the suckers.
