In the TV show the Negative Spirit and Keeg are two different beings. The Negative Spirit stayed behind in the Negative Nebula but basically impregnated Larry with a new spirit before sending him back to Earth. It wanted to stay in space but didn't want Larry to die. It also knew Larry's trauma over his sons and basically gave him another shot at fatherhood.
