Modern horror is like modern rap, when people talk about how terrible it is, they're really just talking about the mainstream stuff. There's some people doing great things for both, but much of the high profile stuff is shit custom made to be so god damn generic that it appeals to the widest variety of people, be it with catchy hooks covering shit verses, or jump scares covering shit narratives.
@13thmistral7 жыл бұрын
Lolwhut ? Though i agree the pacing is a bit to fast in the 2017 thing, it sure is more correct compared to the novel.
@pereztube27 жыл бұрын
Its pretty much well understood that by "modern horror" people basically mean to say "modern mainstream horror". I think that "formula" is more subtle than gore and jump scares though. I think the style of pacing is a big part of it. older movies in general weren't so afraid of being slow and taking time to set up the scary or intense scenes. It 2017 lacked any kind of finesse and just sort of threw "scary stuff" at the audience without regard to building suspense.Yes the 90's version had "outdated" effects and bad dialogue but it was much better at setting up scares and creating an atmosphere of dread( in the first half at least, second half was just bad) in my humble opinion , of course.
@Mandalor105 жыл бұрын
The old version will always hold a special place in my heart because it was the first movie that ever game me nightmares as a kid. The new version handled the transition from kid to adult a lot better than the original. I didn't care for the adult counterparts in the 90's version. I was worried that the new IT would have the same problem. It seems like the studio recognized this as well and went out of their way to cast a killer crew of very talented actors. IT chapter 2 was very well done.
@hodan8435 жыл бұрын
The mini-series actually pays tribute to the book a lot more. It has a lot of scenes that actually happened in the book, like the Teenage Werewolf attacking Richie, the Georgie winking at Bill, and the moving album pictures with Pennywise popping out at them. In that way I really like the mini-series a lot better. I feel like if they used those in the 2017 version, with updated CGI and all that, it might have been better. I didn't find 2017 Pennywise all that scary, more laughable really, especially that dancing scene. But the 1990 Pennywise with that makeup just looks creepy.
@onacanilao5 жыл бұрын
Exactly! I liked both, but the 90s version was what got me into the book in the first place. People are bashing the miniseries saying the 2017 version is truer to the book, but all the 2017 version is is just shiny new, has the benefit of great cgi effects, given lots of time to be well thought out and with a cinema budget. Yes to be fair the 2017 version has the spirit of the book, but it changes so much too. I still like the kids in the 90s version more and drawn into the story telling and pacing better and it is set in the correct time period of the book! Anyways let’s just wait for 20 or 30 yrs for a new remake and I’m sure that new generation will be bashing this 2017 version too. It’s human nature.

Everyone is still calling this a remake. This is not a remake. It is an adaptation. They specifically did a newer adaptation of the novel to further enhance the story of IT. It was talked about for years & years before finally going into production. On the video's note, I disagree, I thought the bathroom scene with Beverly was pretty disturbing. No her dad doesn't put his hands on the sink or on her cheek but he grazes her hair in reference to her looking like a boy instead of a girl in which he was attracted to. To me that is much more disturbing considering in a previous scene beverly was caught buying tampons by her father so the bathroom scene had a much more psychological twist to it. About the slide show comparison with the moving photographs, personally I thought the projector scene took more of a convincing direction vs the turning of the pages. In the 2017 adaptation, the loser's club actually try to turn off the projector before Pennywise comes into full view. But the fact that the project kept going created a sense of not being in control of reality which again to me is much more frightening than the turning of the pages. Yes in the mini series Pennywise reaches out of the pages but that is definitely not as scary or disturbing than him coming out of a projector screen much larger than he originally is. I don't know why they compared Ben's father scene to the 2017 version. Since Ben's father was hardly even mentioned in the 2017 adaptation I don't see why they had to mention it. The only scene that might compare with each other is Eddie's encounter with Pennywise. The bathroom scene was both psychologically thrilling & scary. It definitely gave a sense of being enclosed & lack of perception of reality when Pennywise comes out of the shower drain. I also think it was frightening that we get to see how Pennywise takes different forms early on with his encounter with Eddie as a leper in the 2017 adaptation. Not to mention Bill's ability to individually move his left eye. That gave a sense early on that Pennywise was not human but something disguising as being human. They definitely did a great job with that scene. Anyway that is just my opinion!

I like the reboot better, it gives us more detail into each kid from the losers club. CGI isn't a big deal, and took more story from the book.
@GilbertCarrizales7 жыл бұрын
Who is they? The Director Andy Muschietti? He's already stated in his interviews that IT 2017 is not a remake or a reboot. Reason being is because the 1990 version was actually not a movie. It was a mini series. It started off as a mini series but studios eventually just merged them together to save money on screen time & time slot reservation. So IT 1990 was not a movie therefore It 2017 cannot be a remake or reboot of the mini series rather it can & is a re-adaptation of the novel.

Beverly's bathroom wasn't scary in the miniseries, just uncomfortable; unlike the newer version that also has the voices and this time everything covered in blood, you can truly see her fear and hopelessness. And Stan's encounter with Pennywise in the sewers went further in the new one. We still don't know what he saw while Pennywise was feeding off of him, that's more unsettling than the small encounter he had in the miniseries

I think the voices and the hair attack was WAY overdoing it. In the 1990 version (which I watched) there was voices coming out of Beverly's drain, and no blood, THE SINK WAS FULL OF IT!! It didn't really scare me though, as you aid, just made me uncomfortable so I do agree with your statement in some ways...
@captainpungent7 жыл бұрын
@dank_asian_snacks I agree. For some reason people are saying the new adaptation did it better because it didn't hold back on the gore. I wonder what they feel about movies like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween or Black Christmas (or if they've ever seen them) where the gore is more implied than shown, but IMO scarier than any movie out there today because it's creepy and takes time with it's scares instead of just being startling. Also, the music is way better than the theatrical version, with it's creepy calliope/keyboard/synth/piano score (which won an Emmy). I did like the inclusion of something from the novel, where Bev uses a tape measure. In the book, it happens after the main incident, after they've already cleaned it up. It grabs a hold of it and pulls it until it runs out then chuckles. The hair cutting/attack never happens in the novel and is too close to a Freddy Krueger dream. It's okay, but a little too in your face, pun intended, with the slapstick/Evil-Deady geyser of blood. I also feel that most of them are not being truthful about how scary Tim Curry's Pennywise was, or they've never seen the mini-series at all. At least as children, everyone was scared of him. It was only after Nostalgia Critic's fake drunk review that everyone thinks of him as funny. That's because they were taken out of context and made fun of way more than they should've been. Horror pre-90's (with a few exceptions) will always be superior because they were more original. They focused more on mood than cheap overused tropes, like jump scares. I did like the new one, but it could've been great instead of good/okay.

nope, it was not made as a remake of that. it was made as a separate adaptation of the book. Calling it a remake would be saying that the mini series was the source material. That is incorrect. The book was. It's obviously splitting hairs and not important, but technically it's not a remake (just like if two different bands cover the same song, you wouldn't say the second band is covering the first - they are two distinct covers of the same source song).

Right. Most of them probably watched It (1990) when they were older, too, after hearing about this new movie. And of course it's going to look dated and silly if you watch it when you're older. But if you were unsuspecting child who happened to be in the same room when your parents were watching it back in 1990...DAMN lol it was scary. I was probably five or six and was really scared. I already hated horror movies and clowns, why was I allowed to watch that haha

Hey, I watched the mini-series as a kid, when IT first came out. While I don't deny that IT traumatized me for years, even as a kid there were parts that I thought didn't work. Many of the special effects were bad, even compared to other TV mini-series of the time and most of the adults were out-acted by their kid counterparts. That said, I do respect Tim Curry's performance a lot (he starred in many of my childhood nightmares after all), though I wouldn't say it was better than Bill Skarsgaard. Instead, I think of them as two equally good but different portrayals- kind of like comparing Bela Lugosi's Dracula to Christopher Lee's Dracula. Masterful, but distinctly different.

The 1990 version was indeed scary and few, if any, performances can rival Tim Currys sheer presence on the screen. When comparing both movies you have to take into consideration that 1) since an interpretation of the book had already been put to screen, the second one had to raise the stakes and improve upon parts of it. Being "equally scary" now would make it a failure in the "then why even make a new film?" perspective. 2) The evolution of CGI, alongside the development in moviemaking and the change in taste and expectations in the audience these last decades also make it difficult to compare fairly. All in all both adaptations were great in my opinion and it's difficult, if even possible, to compare them step by step. Bill Skarsgård following someone like Tim Curry is something that would scare most professional actors to death nowadays but i think that he made an amazing interpretation. The child actors were also great (something we rarely get to see in movies in general). All in all I think the new one has more intense horror and the old one more creeping subtle horror. This is a great reflection upon the change in movies in general during these years. Both adaptations were great in their respective ways and I see no point in trying to diminish either one. :)

I recently finished the novel 5 days ago and it's by far one of King's best books IMO. The scariest part for me in the 90s miniseries is The Album scene. Both the miniseries and Chapter 1 I love for what they both represented as truthfully from the text as they could, while they do have their share of deviations from it. Still, there is a creepiness in the miniseries that remains distinct all its own-primarily for how everything was filmed realistically. One has to admire how both were able to bring this Stephen King classic to life while not straying from the atmosphere and themes "IT" exudes and focuses on.
@bigjon186807 жыл бұрын
The original had a lot of heart and "creep-out" moments that the remake lacked. The remake focused more on characterization and faithfulness to the book. However, you can't blame either adaption for their faults since they are different tellings.
@dex47067 жыл бұрын
Jon Knecht the original was infinitely more close to the book than this new one. New one was highly disappointing. Left Mike Hanlons story out, changed details way too much, left out a lot of stuff with Henry Bowers and the gang, and used too much fake looking cgi that was not fearsome at all. I mean don't ppl see computerized images look shitty and fake it ruins the whole appeal of horror movies that the older originals got right

Dex... Are you joking? More faithful to the book? The original? LMFAO Have you even opened a page of the book? If you have then I think you would agree the the new film is infinitely more actuate than the 1990 miniseries. And the cgi looked bad in the film? Have you seen the 1990 miniseries? The effects are fucking terrible and laughable. (The only thing the new film should have done was flesh out more of Mike. They should have not switched his traits with Ben. )
@linlinxoxo7 жыл бұрын
I agree with Dex. the original had the moving pictures, the teenage werewolf, had more time to flesh out the characters, hanging out in the barrens, building the dam, Georgie winking, Bowers and his gang following them into the sewers, belchs death, the love bill had for silver, beverlys sink scene was closer to the books. even the dialogue was closer to the book (I know the original was set in the 50s and they changed it to the 80s for the new movie which is probably why the dialogue was so different). I know the new movie had Eddie running from the leper and included the house on neibolt street but a movie just can't encompass the depth of the characters or how tight nit their group was. they never had a wrench thrown into their group like the fight bill and richie had in the new movie. everyone followed bills lead no questions asked. I think the original did better in terms of how close all of them became. with all that being said i think the overall horror tone in the movie did a much better job. I love the novel and both versions but I think the movie is better then the original.

Coolnilk actually its an adaptation but it is a remake of the 90s tv movie. The movie is split into 2 parts, part 1 is mainly focused on the kids, while part 2 will be focused on them as adults coming back to fight pennywise once and for all. Its differently paced, it knows how to get to them, it doesn't awkwardly transition between both them as adults and their kid forms. The movie is a remake using the same characters and an adaptation of the book. This one follows more closer to the book than the 90s one did. Very little changes from the book and are brought to life in the movie. So yeah its a remake yet its an adaptation

really? It was very random for me and not scary at all, the 1991 is way more psychological, and for years I couldn't close my eyes during the shower thanks to that scene. Is one of the best horror scenes in history and the leper just acts more like a zombie and appears from nowhere without any atmosphere or psychological context, we know Eddie fears with the hygiene for the book and the miniseries but in the movie is barely mentioned except in the very end.

SarahJae LuvesCupcakes I personally think the Eddie encounters are the perfect example of how different these Pennywise's are. The new one is a brutal animal he wants to scare his prey but he's very direct in how he does it, becoming what they fear and coming at them like a ravaging wolverine. He only resorts to more psychological methods if he absolutely has to like with Beverly. He definitely prefers terrifying them with sheer primal attacks and I think if Ben or Eddie weren't fast enough in those encounters they'd be dead. The old Pennywise is very different he prefers psychological warfare breaking his prey completely before he eats them. He doesn't just want them afraid he wants them to know there is nothing they can do to survive. Pennywise corners almost all of them and let's them live but not before showing that he's not human and taunting them. He uses words to damage people almost as much as his powers. This is further shown by the projector and book scene. Bill's Pennywise uses the projector to appear like he's coming right at them creating the illusion of a primal attack before appearing massive and actually charging right at them. Curry's Pennywise acts like he doesn't see them before openly telling them just what he is and slowly reaching out showing he can get them anywhere. They're completely different and their encounters with the Losers show this.

The original miniseries (both parts), was far superior to the 2017 film remake. There’s something so unsettling about it starting out in the late 50’s, during a more outwardly innocent time, during the height of the Post-War Years in the United States. The time-skip to the late 80’s (a time when America really lost its innocence big time) was more fitting and poignant, and the remake simply couldn’t capture that zeitgeist.

@camlong893 жыл бұрын
Yep. 1982's The Thing is still scarier than any modern horror movie. Practical effects always look more convincing because you can feel them in the scene. CGI can be good sometimes like in District 9, but usually it takes me out of the film.

I thought the mini-series take on Georgie in the beginning was scarier too. I think NOT seeing everything was more frightening than what the 2017 version showed.

I live the 1990 movie more as it is closer to the book. I think one of the scariest parts is Beverley going into her house with the woman who turns into her father only to discover it never happened and the house is boarded up and empty.

Completely disagree on all accounts. And I grew up watching and loving the hell out of the miniseries. The remake is the only movie I have EVER gone out to see twice in the theaters.

I really love the original IT miniseries. The newer IT movies are great too, but I feel like the newer movies rely too much on special effects and CGI. It just makes it seem less realistic and over the top. The newer movies try too hard to be scary, and it doesn’t make sense to me because the whole point of IT being a clown is that he is supposed to be a “wolf in sheep’s costume.” If Pennywise always looks scary then that defeats the purpose of him being a clown. Also, Tim Curry.

When it comes to scares. I definitely gotta give to the 1990 film. It did have a few genuinely creepy moments. The 2017 film was good but not scary in the least. To much CGI and way to much comic relief kept it from being scary at all.

The sewer scene in the beginning of the mini-series was scarier too. Tim Curry is amazing in that scene. He seems so friendly and slowly he starts getting creepier and creepier. The 2017 'IT' was good. Shocking. but not scarier. ( my opinion anyways )

How is the 1990 version scarier? You may get that feeling if you saw it as a kid. Watch that series again today and you'll laugh. Neither version is particularly scary and doesn't try to be (its more creepy).

Diego MV he never said it was scarier in total, he just said some moments which were scarier than the 2017 one

well you are supposed to laugh in IT, because Pennywise is a clown and he mades clown crude jokes to his victims, even in the 2017 version you are also supposed to laugh in some scenes

First: Tim Curry’s performance as IT was better Second: The new movie sucks ass. It generally wasn’t scary. It relied too much on crappy jump scares and these moment were IT would run towards the screen screaming. Third: They changed the time period from taking place in the sixties to the eighties. The only thing I liked about the new IT was Beverly.

This is just my opinion and I was born in 1991 so when I was young and watched the 1990 version, that scaired me but I personally think the new one is way scarier. Because it got me thinking that let's say the 2017/2019 movies were around in 1990 that would of really really freaked me out lol. The way Pennywise opens his mouth in the new movies is hands down creepier then Tim Curreys version. Don't get me wrong Tim Curreys clown is iconic and he did a great job but his is more funny and I feel that the new one is better and scarier.

I watched the 1990s version of IT as a little kid. I used to be scared of the shower drain in the same manner that Candyman made me scared of mirrors. I don't think the new version invokes the same fear of the unseen/unknown even though it's more well-rounded
@apatia296 жыл бұрын
2017 has a better production, pretty cool visuals, and it's fun to watch, but overall is a very self indulgent film with a strange format, I felt like I was watching an episode from some Netflix show instead of a theatrical film. And actually it's no more faithfull to the book than the 1990's version (although that is not a complain, considering the type of story it was impossible to be faithfully recreated on film).

I was at a plasma center a few years donating and quite unwilling was subjugated to having the 1990 IT on while I was waiting and during the donation, and it was really creepy, the shower drain scene especially stood out in my mind. When I saw last year's version, it was like "ah, that is so CGI" but I couldn't necessarily put my finger on what didn't settle right, and this video does a good job of doing that, thanks.
