Jack needs to pull a truck for one minute" is incorrectly stating the question. Is Jack pulling it 1 foot or 60 feet????? "Jack needs to pull a truck one foot per second for one minute" is more correctly stating the question but still not correct. Just stating that a truck needs to be pulled for a period of time is not enough information to calculate horsepower. You also need to state the distance , speed or rate at which it needs to be pulled and the force or torque that is doing the pulling. You also need to state that the pulling force or the torque is constant and you are negating any acceleration. So to compound how badly this question was stated....you also incorrectly provided the definition of mechanical horsepower. it is stated in the video that horsepower is the FORCE necessary to MOVE 1 pound a distance of 1 foot in 1 second. Wrong. Horsepower is the POWER necessary to LIFT 550 pounds a height of 1 foot in 1 second. Force and power have a different definition so it is incorrect to say that horsepower is the FORCE. necessary. And moving forward 1 foot is NOT THE SAME as lifting 1 foot. Jack needs to LIFT a 115.5 Ton truck one foot per second for 1 minute Jack needs to LIFT a 115.5 Ton truck one foot over a period of 1 minute That is 2 different ways to more correctly state the question and that would give you 2 different answers The answer you gave is technically wrong because of you incorrectly stated the question. It is absolutely amazing to me that the people that make up these tests would not catch their own mistake. It is also astonishing that the people making a video to teach the test would not catch the mistake. And giving the excuse that the person taking the test should just assume the correct form of a question is not an excuse.

Don't understand why the comments are complaining about the lack of explaining. Once he introduced it, it made sense naturally. The video helped me learn to how to evaluate these sorts of problems. Thanks!

Great video! Just wanted to point that at @3:50 while you describe Mechanical Horsepower, explaining that one (1) Mechanical HP can move 500ft-lbs per sec OR 33,000 ft-lbs per minute. Doing the math (33,000 divided by 60 is 550, not 500). Checked some sources on the web, most say it's 550ft-lbs per sec. Just a minor thing that I wanted to point out, as it might be confusing for some.

I don't get it. The formula for MA (Mechanical Advantage is MA = Load/Effort) you divide load which is 200lbs to the effort which is 80lbs you get 2.5. so MA is 2.5 meaning whatever effort the guy puts out, it will be times 2.5 because of the pulley system he is using. Since he is generating 80lbs of force multiply that with 2.5.... you get 200lbs. same weight as the load. Why isnt it enough to pull the 200lbs when he is generating 200lbs as well. Am I missing something here? or maybe should the effort be the same as the load PLUS 1? or does the pulley system have a different formula for mechanical advantage?

Hey would you help to solve this one? When you said "Jack needs to pull a truck for 1 minute. The truck weighs 115.5 tons. What's the minimum number of horsepower?" I know that ton = 2,000 115.5 x 2,000 = 231,000 Ibs But I don't know how you find the last answer 33,000.
@MometrixTestPrep7 жыл бұрын
33,000 is not an answer that they calculated. It is just a value you need to know. It is the number of pounds a single horsepower can move in one minute. For more ASVAB review, we have an excellent study guide available on our website at www.myasvabsecrets.com.

at 12:00, I thought 90hp was the maximum output of the motor and I had to calculate the power loss of a 90hp motor running at 90% power. I got 9 hp by multiplying 90hp by .90 which got me 81 (which would be the power output of a 90 hp running at 90 percent, then subtracted that from 90, which left me at 9 hp. I realized my mistake after the explanation....thanks my guy
