That’s a very interesting tape, because I see something completely different. I see a deeply hurt, and insecure woman, who can’t even look at her own photograph in front of her. I wonder what kind of traumas she based in her early life that now force her to clean herself so thoroughly, even before entering the shower. The obsessive compulsive tendencies run very deep here, and the sadness runs across the entire scene. Don’t see her as a diva in this moment, not even a little bit. I see her hurting, and desperately trying to prove society that she is perfect. If that Is the definition of diva, and I guess I’ve been wrong my entire life.

On the surface it shows her as the mega-star she is, with a morning regimen in her "palace" and limousine and finally makeup chair that we'd expect from a movie queen of her caliber at the time and sets the stage for her larger-than-life grandiosity that is soon revealed. But yes, delving deeper it shows the discipline and perhaps borderline OCD of a driven women with past issues. You're incorrect about the autographs though, and not looking at her image as she signed her head shot. That is to show that Joan held her fans above all else and wanted to personally cater to and never neglect them, which she was known to do. Her "not looking" as she signed is just showing it is something she does so often (as many major movie actors do) that it is second nature, not insecurity about her appearance. Her hand spread out over her face is just the way she holds then down when signing.

We don't how much of the horrible stories are accurate in this film, but this scene is probably closest to the truth. She was known to be meticulous, answer her fan mail with individually autographed photos, and even her rivals like Bette Davis noted that she was always professional on set. Early, and ready to go.

Most were true as they get. When Christopher did an interview days after Joan's death, he recalled several abusive altercations he had with Joan after Christina was sent to boarding school. One of them was when he was diagnosed with a sleepwalking disorder at 12. Instead of taking the doctor's advice to send Christopher away to seek proper treatment, Joan literally strapped him to his bed for a year. It got him out of the sleepwalking, but it traumatized him greatly because of the extremes she went to get him over it. This incident was in Christina's book among with other abuses and when he was 18, Christopher left Joan's home after being unable to put up with how she treated his older sister along with him. Most denied the story including Joan's favorite children, Cathy and Cynthia(Cindy). Both Christina and Christopher pointed out that those two had it much easier than what she put the older kids through.

The only person that ever said this was a terrible movie was Faye Dunaway herself.... she didn't realize her acting was way over the top until the premiere of the movie in NYC (she didn't watch any of the daily "rushes"), and everyone was laughing really hard at the "no more wire hangers.. EVER" scene (among others). She's slammed it AND her performance ever since. She's stated on several occasions the director should have pulled her back from all that over-acting, but, he liked what she was doing and thought it was Oscar-worthy...

Faye was brilliant and nobody criticizes her role in the film. What people criticize and dislike is the film by how they shot the image of the great Joan Crawford. Even Faye herself does not want to talk about the movie because she knows it is not entirely true and she was fond of Crawford, who in her life spoke very well of Dunaway. In addition to being discredited because it is a series B movie.

One of the things that caught my attention is how aggressively she washes herself for her morning routine at the beginning of her day and getting dressed, I'm the opposite. I feel like I "can't" wash myself that thoroughly until I know I have nothing left to do that day, so I can immediately crawl into clean sheets. First in the day would be a "light" shower because if I do a "thorough" shower and skincare routine and all that I won't want to do anything at all and "have" to do it again at night anyway. During rough or depressive periods where it gets worse there would be times where if I left the house even just to grab the mail I would "have" to change my clothes. If I had to get up to go to the bathroom during sleep, I "have" to put on socks before my bare feet touch the floor because if my feet touch the floor I'll "have" to wash them again and then change my sheets before I "sully" them, resulting in a laundry basket full of socks from one night because once I've worn a pair and taken them off I can't wear them again. I've been doing a lot better lately, which is nice.

This opening scene is so wonderfully directed. We're introduced to Joan with no dialogue whatsoever yet so much is conveyed as to the ambitious woman she is. The film teases us by not revealing Faye's transformation into the iconic scarlet until the last second; even her hand covers her portrait as she signs it. If only the rest of the film wasn't such a (though admittedly enjoyable) shitshow.

I think the opening of "Funny Girl" is just as impressive. Fanny (it's evening of course because she has to perform that night) walks in to the scene, from behind, with her to-die-for leopard coat and cloche hat. And suddenly, the marquee lights up with her name. She enters the theater, and she sees a mirror. Then, with that Streisand profile, with her eyes and nose, she says, "Hello, gorgeous." She should have won the Oscar for just the opening scene alone.

I grew up when this movie came out and saw first hand the changes it made in the decor of houses. Prior to this movie most Americans had about a 12 x 13 Master Bedroom and a 8x10 Bathroom. After this movie, Glamour bathrooms with showers and sunken tubs began and bedrooms grew larger and larger, Art Deco came in style and white carpet all because of this movie.

I went to see this opening day in Westwood. I went to the first Matinee because I had just read the book. There were 2 little Brentwood girls, probably no more than 10, 11 sitting behind me. And when Faye/Joan fills the basin up w/ice and glycerine, one of the girls behind says to the other one, "What's THAT?" And the other one replied dryly, "Last night's Martinis."

I think this movie will be vindicated in time. Part of the initial bewilderment it caused in the press I think had to do primarily with the fact that this was the pioneering foray into the tell-all biopic genre, and critics were simply unprepared as to how to approach something quite so novel. It is human nature to rebel against that which one is unprepared to handle. Just food for thought.

This film has gotten a lot of flack for being campy which I think is ridiculous. I think that idea came along when people who could not possibly accept the fact that a Hollywood movie star and a public Persona so carefully crafted buy a very talented actress could possibly have an alter ego so polar opposite of that image. Many have accused Faye Dunaway of overacting and going overboard but the truth is she played this role exactly as the book portrayed Crawford whether it was true or not and that was her job. Her job was not to tell the story of Joan Crawford as the public knew her but rather of Joan Crawford as her daughter Christina claimed that she was. In that regard Faye dunaway's performance is no less than an academy award-winning performance and the only reason she wasn't nominated was because Hollywood is incapable of holding a mirror up to itself to show The Ugly Truth. The entire world was duped by Rock Hudson even though his private life was well documented amongst Hollywood circles and he wasn't the only one. To this day Faye Dunaway defends her portrayal by stating that the director did not reign her in but the fact is he did a wonderful job of letting her be exactly as the character was described in the book. She manages to give off show the image that the public knew and the woman that the girl described in the book and while it's impossible for some to believe that could ever be true I'm here to tell you it can because I grew up with parents who were one way in public and completely different in in private. I cannot say that I believe everything did Christina Crawford said but I do believe the mass majority of it. no matter what anyone says Faye Dunaway gave the performance of a lifetime and Hollywood should be ashamed for snubbing her and overlooking her.

I love this scene.. Joan wore white gloves to bed every night because she slathered her hands with creme before going to sleep to keep them soft & smooth... And the ice & witch hazel thing was Joans way of tightening & closing her pores after scrubbing her face.. I admire Joan immensely. She grew up in the ghettos of San Antonio in a single parent household. Worked hard labor as a child before child labor laws went into effect. Her keen sense of discipline and cleanliness resulted from her growing up impoverished. Her work ethic and commitment to her fans is legendary. People today could learn alot from her. The ice water is very smart. After I shower and shave, I take a washcloth soaked in ice-cold water and hold it on my face for a few minutes. It closes the pores and reduces any swelling and irritation caused by shaving.

Such a gorgeous and totally modern home she lived in, considering it was 1939! But the reality was Joan didn't live in a gigantic mansion like that; it was more Mediterranean and looked more old-fashioned. I think this was a set for the movie. Dang, a freezer in her bathroom, three shower heads, and a coffee percolator right in her bathroom! And her home looks air conditioned, but that wasn't around then, at least for houses

Well, Hollywood movie stars lived utterly differently from the rest of the Western World (they still do, but the gap has closed up a little - I mean, most of us have a shower now). They had the cash to purchase the biggest and best most-up-to-the-minute Moderne mansions. Crawford’s home here actually looks *dated* for 1939 - the style is more like 1929/1930. Yes, there are photos of her real-life living room at around the same time, floating around on the web, but none of her bedroom, bathroom or closet, so we don’t know how it really looked anyway. Also, there *was* A/C in homes then - Norma Shearer (no friend of Joan’s!) had her and Irving Thalberg’s Santa Monica home sealed and air-conditioned throughout - in the early 1930s.
