Hey Momo! A tip, from someone who's just finished a costume degree - if you've got a costume that needs to be hand washed or dry-cleaned, you can mix up a spray bottle of 50% water and 50% vodka (make sure it doesn't have added sugar or anything though!) and it'll kill off any smell causing bacteria! :) And a few drops of an essential oil into that mixture can add a nice scent to it if you so wish. Just turn the garment inside out, mist it all over and let it air dry, and bam, your garment's freshened up - we do this during theatre shows when there isn't enough time to dry clean, I imagine it could be helpful if you have to wear the same outfit multiple days for a LARP. Another helpful thing - sweat pads. You can either buy them - or make them out of a few layers of calico; pin them into your costume and take em out at the end of the day, they're easy and don't take up too much room :)

Great, but please be careful when using essential oils because they don't dissolve/mix with water (no idea about vodka tho) so make sure to shake well before you spray it. Also, don't use essential oils if you have sensitive skin, break out easily, have breathing problems, or if it will come in contact with small children or animals. Hope this helps!

One of these days I'll use all your lovely tips and tricks for a LARP. I just play in so many modern LARPs right now it's not even funny. I will say the Pinterest board is a really helpful tool with those because it helps me figure out my characters aesthetic. Thanks!!! From a costume sewing co-LARPER (though european) it's nice to have a video developping the touhgts process behind designing a full costume, and encouraging people to make it from scratch! (or at least combining it with original pieces) It adds to the atmosphere and avoids having everyone turn up in the same dresses and costumes! You can really tell the story of your character with your costume, but the really fun and interesting thing is to see it evolving with your character, you might have a setback and get more dirty, or join a new group and slowly try to blend in with them.... Looking forward to see how yours evolves!!

I think if you're putting a costume together from pieces, it's important to find one piece that you see and just think "yes, this is the embodiment of my costume". On my current costume (general renaissance festival, the theme for the day I'm going is "Barbarian Invasion" but I'm thinking slightly more fantasy) I just found that piece today. A gorgeous (second hand) sleeveless top with lace up sides and a hood. It's black with a detailed fabric... Just amazing. Technically from a high end company that makes good quality clothes of a more historical/renaissance ish style, but I would be equally excited if it were a low quality piece. It's about finding the one piece (or fabric or other material) that just defines to costume.

If you want to make a sample costume, go to a second hand store and buy sheets to use as sample fabric. Wash really well in hot water and sew. Also Joann fabrics has sales in their patterns to where they are $1.99. I have a Joann app and it helps to keep an eye on their sales.
