Many people who live outside the United States have asked me "What is V8"? V8 is simply a vegetable juice blend. The main ingredient in V8 is tomato juice. Twelve ounces (355mL) of tomato juice may be substituted in this recipe. This is a very simple recipe with very simple ingredients. No fuss, no drama.Just easy comfort food to make your belly happy on a cold day.

Dear Greg, I am quite old and remember when mom was making a beef stew back in 1945. I was playing outside with my brother and still recall the fantastic fragrance (smell) of mom's stew. I am 85 and made a stew for my middle-aged son the other day and he loved it.

For those who have always wondered what the spices combination used in the beef stew flavoring packs are it's : Salt & pepper, onion powder, paprika, celery seed, dried basil, oregano, rosemary, garlic & parsley and a little Cayenne pepper. My mum used V8 in her stews also. It adds a wonderful flavor. She also added a tin of stewed tomatoes & a tablespoon of tomato paste. Rather than using flour to thicken as many do she used cornstarch because it doesn't alter the flavor. I make this stew now and my family has always loved it. Of course mine is a garden sink type.. any leftover or needing to be used veggies go into the pot along with the staples.

I'm going to double up on the carrots and the potatoes and the V8 and add some peas and dried sage and thyme. It will fill the pot I'm sure but now I know to just put it on high and let it do its thing. Tomorrow, I'll finally get it out of the box. I think I have to wash it first. Good solid recipe. You can always add a can of beef broth, and saute the floured beef, if you want more flavor. Also, saute the veggies with olive oil for more depth of flavor. Most gals from this time, had no idea of these techniques to make a recipe even better. My mom had the worst watery beef veggie stew, but hey, dad loved it!..but I was always telling her it wasn't rich enough, thick enough, and had little flavor. So I learned to use better ingredients, and techniques when I got older. I never asked my dad to compare them though!!! RESPECT for mom please!!!!

Great recipe, Greg. As far as those criticizing its simplicity, I'd say firstly that if you feel complication is necessary for something to be good then you're not as much of a foodie as you think you are, and secondly that if you're in a family situation like ours in which everyone works a lot of hours then you view simple and straightforward recipes as a gift. Looking forward to trying this, although I'll probably end up doubling it in order to not have to cook for a couple of days, LOL. Thanks again!

Good job on the recipe! My only comment is on the crock-pot, it is a slow cooker, and not like a regular saucepan cooking on the stove top, so everytime you lift the lid, that adds to your cooking time, as it takes some time to build up the heat inside and get going again, so it is not meant for lifting the lid every 30 minutes or how ever often you do so, that is for a regular on top of the stove top cooking pots, a crock-pot you put every thing in and set the temp and come back many hours later and then test, stir, then eat! I know this is some years older video, but I just wanted to let you know.

I loved "Western Spaghetti" so much that I asked for it for my birthday dinner one year. In an electric skillet, heat a T veg oil & some salt. Cube a pounded flank steak and drop 'm in to brown. Drain a can of black olives & dump'm in with a pack (+/-) of dry spaghetti and tomato juice to WELL cover. Put cubes or strips of American cheese on top and give it some time. (I know! Not sure if cheddar or Jack would suffice, even though I'm not an American fan.) When the pasta is done, dish'er up. My dad & I also enjoyed bacon, green beans, & tomatoes--classic "use up the garden produce!" dish. If you don't do frozen & canned, the order to cook is bacon (remove, reserve some fat), beans (steam covered 1/2way), tomatoes (with or without the skins, it's going down your gullet!)

Nice recipe. I am going to make it tomorrow. Cooking our mother's recipes is a way of remembering her. My sister and I are both in our 70's. But, you know what, they just aren't quite as good as when mom made them.

Tried this last night and it goes into the regular rotation for dinner. It was absolutely delicious! Only things I had to do "different" was I used about a cup of baby carrots, cut into thirds instead of large carrots and a sirloin tip roast I cut into chucks myself, just cause the roast was much cheaper. Didn't matter, though. My brother ate with me and I think he scored the bottom of the bowl, he loved it so much! :)

Thank you for posting. I heard with crock pot cooking the key is not to open the lid. One source said every time you do it adds 20 min to your cooking time. Not sure how true that is but because of that I only open near the end of cooking time. Hope that makes sense. They say that when you let the steam out you lower the cooking temperature thus takes longer for it to get back up. Cant wait to try it. Nice and easy. Thanks again. 🙏🏻❤️

I hope you try the recipe and I appreciate you watching my video, but I don't buy into that myth. Modern crockpots are controlled by a thermocouple. When you take the lid off and the heat is lost, the cooker will sense this and turn on the heating elements to regain the lost heat just like when you open your oven door. In this video the entire cook took 4 hours. I had to take the lid off to check when my food was done. If I didn't take the lid off and check my food how would I ever know when it was done? Don't be afraid to remove the lid and taste your food every few hours and make adjustments. It won't add that much cooking time, and as I've said before if I was concerned about how long it takes l wouldn't be using a "slow cooker ".

Actually browning the beef gives depth to flavor. There was no other reason to flour the stew meat if he wasn't going to brown it a little first. He should try it that was next time to see if it makes it even better. You're not cooking the meat through, just a little browning in a skillet before adding.

joeywyss junior actually...I wouldn’t sat there was no reason to flour the meat if he wasn’t going to brown it first. The flour helped the V8 make a nice gravy.

browning the meat helps 'seal in' the juices making the meat more tender, or at least that's what they told us in culinary school
@gregmccutchan.
@gregmccutchan. 6 жыл бұрын
"Browning the meat to seal in the juices" is not necessary in this recipe. The meat is mixed with the V8 juice and the vegetables put out a fair amount of liquid. The meat cannot possibly dry out unless you boil the pot dry.
